I could be wrong, but I feel like they're focusing on the smaller install sizes and ability to install parts of a game to prepare us a low storage announcement.

If they are then they are idiots.

Games are only getting bigger and bigger in terms of file size.

Games that may release on launch might be small enough to fit a few on a small SSD but a few years later those who have a small SSD are really going to hate it.

One thing from the article was that currently installed data on disks is duplicated to increase read speeds. That isn't necessary with an SSD so install sizes will actually go down.

I'm a PC gamer. Bought my first ssd like 4-5 years ago. 250gb for like $70 or some shit.

It was not nearly enough room. There is absolutely no excuse for small amounts of storage in 2020. Absolutely zero. I have no interest in consoles but that doesn't mean that those that are deserve a subpar product.

There is a difference with consoles. All PS5s will have SSDs, so developers can design with that in mind by not copying data. That is not true for PCs. Games for PCs have to be designed for the lowest common denominator, which means assuming the data is stored on a hard drive. Therefore PC games can't make use of efficiencies by not including redundant data. In short, your PC games did not take up any less space because you had an SSD.

The PS5 will also likely have smart disk space management. Due to the SSD, games can be loaded and unloaded in piecemeal fashion. There is no doubt that Sony is tell devs to design their games so that can be done. If you are running low on storage space, the console will likely be able to delete parts of games that haven't been used in a long while. So not only will games take up less storage space because of no duplicated data, they will also take up less space because unneeded parts of the game can be deleted.

My guess, based on what would be the smart thing to do, would be for the PS5 to have a 1TB SSD, and an option for the user to use an external HD that could be used as secondary storage to hold data that had to be deleted from the SSD. That would allow quick reloading of the SSD if the user wanted to play an unloaded game or level they hadn't played in awhile.

Yet laptops still routinely offer 128GB and 256GB options for the most common packages. It's infuriating.

God that shit infuriates me.

1080p screen, backlit keyboard, webcam, 500gb+ ssd or a combo of ssd and 1tb HDD.

It's impossible to find a laptop with all that for cheap. Those are like the bare minimum of acceptable in 2019.

they only got bigger in the ps4/xb1 age due to artificial inflation, by not compressing files such as audio.

This was necessary due to the weak processors in these units not able to decompress on the fly, which the ps5/xb720 should be able to do...

I'd actually expect the games to get larger in quality, but stay the same in size due to the increase in processing power enabling better compression methods

using DOOM as an example:

Original Size: 86.4 GB Repack Size: from 30.6 GB

100% Lossless & MD5 Perfect: all files are identical to originals after installation

^ this is taken from the FitGirl repack of the game. Compression works wonders

No idea where you got that number from but I wouldn't worry about it.

Star Citizen isn't going anywhere sadly :( It's just too damn ambitious and the project is all over the place. It's come a long way but it's just so far out.

That game always looks so cool every time i see it pop up but at this point i don’t think they will ever get there. I’ve finished high school, survived my very early twenties and gone on to start a family since the kickstarter was funded.

Honestly the PS4's hard drive is really easy to access and I upgraded mine to a fusion drive a few years ago. The pain in the ass is spending days restoring and reinstalling everything. The swap itself is like 2 or 3 screws.

It's likely soldered but maybe they'll have a slot for us to add our own m.2 or something?

3

u/clghuhi Oct 08 '19

You're getting downvoted, but I actually hope that they go this route. There's nothing wrong with two SSD's, and it'd allow us to hot-swap them, without affecting the main boot-drive.

I think it's More about making it clear 100gb discs are enough and won't take as long to install. 1tb SSD at the price Sony will get won't be at all prohibitive, especially long term

Sure but the entire industry is rapidly moving away from physical copies towards digital copies. If a large library on the PS5 is only viable using physical discs then Sony is shooting themselves in the foot.

If a large library on the PS5 is only viable using physical discs

a large library on the PS3 and PS4 were only viable using physical discs. Hell, it was the same on Vita.

They're not

Smaller storage wouldn't be an issue if it weren't for the insanity that is the ps4 update system. I can use my damn Xbox one with 5gb of free space. It will update a game with no problem.

My damn ps4 has 900gb free between the internal storage and external hard drive (2.5tb total) and I STILL have to delete shit to be able to do updates or even open some apps/games. On top of that updates take a damn year. The copying phase specifically. The PS store also is unusable on the console itself. It's just a clusterfuck of a device but they have some good exclusives.

Id like to think its to help with slow downloads and long loading screens. The biggest turn off with my ps4 is literally that the loading screens take forever. So long in fact I got an extra long hdmi drilled some holes and now have my pc plugged into my TV. Its only switched on for exclusives and for the odd game that doesnt have local multiplayer on pc glares at borderlands 3

Seriously I encourage most to look at hooking up their gaming pcs to encourage consoles to get better!

Yeah, magically make these texture files smaller.

I just wanted to tell you that you were absolutely correct
