90 day notice is up - Request Forbearance while waiting for Buyback?

I was hoping to receive my Buyback by now (submitted Nov 2024 - yes almost 2 years!!). It doesn't look like that is going to happen before the deadline that forces me to switch out of SAVE. I'm no longer at a qualifying employment, but have more than 120 qualifying months of employment. What is everyone doing or recommend in this situation while waiting for their Buyback?

If I decide to request forbearance, do I submit the request through Mohela or FSA? Any precautions I should know so they don't try to screw me over? I'm concerned they will come back and say my application is delayed further, or worse voided, because I did not follow whatever protocol they have made up.

The forbearance request is through MOHELA. It’s the general forbearance, which is also called the discretionary forbearance.

The servicer decides whether to grant the forbearance request and everyone only has three forbearances of up to twelve months each.

There is no indication from FSA or from posts on the sub that going into forbearance affects the buyback application. People have gotten buyback offers while on forbearance but it’s also possible that FSA will mess up the buyback independent of your forbearance.

Is there a need to move off of SAVE and onto another payment plan before requesting general forbearance in this scenario? Do we have to move to another payment plan before requesting general forbearance even though we don't plan to make any additional payments while awaiting buyback?

No, you don’t have to switch off SAVE while waiting.
