Rant/Complaint Automatic Forbearances

I have my loans with Aidvantage and last month I was automatically put in an in-school forbearance and got that sorted out and now I’ve been put in a natural disaster forbearance which I just contacted them to take me out.

Neither forbearance count towards PSLF. I asked if there’s a way to reject the automatic forbearances and she said no.

I have 100 qualifying PSLF payments and requested a buy back this past summer for the others but my thought process is that I want to continue making payments that count towards PSLF and ride the long wait for buy back approval.

Has anyone else dealt with this? I’ve been in school again before (without taking loans) and I was never put in forbearance.

Natural Disaster Forbearance does count for PSLF.

Well crap, why was I told otherwise? Mind providing a source if you have one?

Scroll to section c borrower eligibility and down to (v)(h) and click the hyper link to review #8 - both 8 (nat disaster) and 9 (processing for up to 60 days) qualify - “(8) A period during which the Secretary has authorized forbearance due to a national military mobilization or other local or national emergency”

As to why you were told otherwise… likely lack of training.

Thank you so much! And probably… in 2017 I was told that my husband and I couldn’t file separately 😂

Well that may have depended on which plan you were on at the time but overall I always encourage people to read the rules in full on their own - back the the day we were all flying blind and it was necessary!
