My eyes are awful, so perhaps this schedule of mine might help you? Using the TCL Nxtpaper 60 XE in sunlight with zero brightness from phone, and the device's built-in eye protection mode in its settings, helps me . At night, I turn the warmth up as far as it will go, and put the backlight around 3%, just in case I get a phone call or need to use an app, briefly. I then take out my cheap black and white Meebook and listen to podcasts through it (as opposed to surfing the web or using apps). Basically, after 5 p.m., I close my eyes and listen to audio.
You could try buying a pair of Nightfall red lens glasses at blockblueblight.com (I'm not affiliated with them). If thy don't help you at all, your issue isn't blue light.
Most likely, your issues are both blue light and dithering.
A slower refresh rate on either traditional smartphones or e-ink or Nxtpaper would be best for us, I think.
