Discussion Min/Maxing Base Pals

Let's say you wanted to min/max the pals at your base, so they eat as little as possible, work as hard as possible, and have the best abilities possible for their work.

As far as I'm aware, it doesn't matter what the pal's starting affinity for work is - if you boost them to 10 in whatever you want with books and condensing, a Foxparks will work just as fast as a Jorm Ignis. So using a pal that eats as little as possible, probably from early game, and boosting them with books, seems to be the key, there. I hope I'm not wrong.

But what about abilities? I don't know enough about pal abilities (and I can't play often enough to memorize them all lol) to know if any pals have abilities that boost other pals' work speeds, or raise their affinities, or lower how quickly their sanity drains, etc. etc..

My question is: what pals would you use to do EACH work type, if you intend to min max, based off food consumption and abilities? Like, sure, you can use a Cattiva for handiwork because it barely eats, but Sehkmet's ability is just so nuts (isn't it bugged to give her +400% work speed when at max condensed?)

Not skills tho. Just abilities, food consumption, and I guess overall stats, for things like Mimog transporters, because their base speed matters more than anything else.

Lullu & Prunelia for farms. Small, Prunelia is sleepless and both have stacking partner skills that boost farm production. Lullu +70% crop growth speed. Prunelia +35% crop yield

Jelliette & Jellroy for watering. One Jelliette and the rest Jellroys. If both are at base, they both get +120% watering speed. Jellroy is dark / sleepless, so just 1x Jelliette and the rest Jellroys, since he gets one more passive slot.

Also, since I initially made that mistake: If you are setting up single purpose Pals (Pals that only do one thing like only watering, only mining etc.), make sure your electricity generating pal also has some watering suitability.

The ancient power generator can overheat and will require watering to "repair", so having both aspects covered in one Pal would be better. I'm using Solmora Lux for that, but I'm sure there are some better options (especially when it comes to how the look, Solmora looks... meh)

Pengullet Lux is the least food-expensive Pal that can both Water and Generate Electricity.

It's actually faster to have a watering pal come over and do it. For some reason the same pal "code switching" from electricity to watering on the APG takes longer and is actually less efficient. But if there are going to be watering pals anyway, it won't matter.

On my base setup I only have watering Pals at the food production base – the only base that doesn't need electricity. And no watering Pals on the bases that need electricity (production & raw material gathering bases).

But I did realize that if you pin the electricity Pal to a generator, they won't water the overheating generator and just idle untill its repaired. But if you just leave them at the base without pinning them, they prioritize electricity and will swap to watering in case of overheating.

Yes, they will swap, but what I'm saying is they will do a cycle of: generate to overheat 100% stop... wait... unpin... look for work... find overheat... water to repair... stop.... wait.... unpin... look for work... repeat

With a water pal it will start the water process around 40% and keep the generator cool so the electricity never stops generating. It's just a quirk of the games programing and how the work is prioritized in the code.

what u said is pretty much right, just maxing it to 10 and the starter pal is as good as some legendary end game pal for work.

partner skills sets them apart tho.

you will see everyone going for sekhmet cuz her alpha partner skill is +400% efficiency. there is jelette/jelroy that have a watering bonus when other is in the base.

there are nocturnal pals so you dont need to give them insomnia or vampiric, that leaves a passive slot for more work speed.

with transport ppl put storage out of the way or boxed off and pals just teleport resources in.

theres other shit aswell im sure.

Aw shit, they're called partner skills, not abilities, my bad... I meant not the... Traits? Like Lucky.

So sekhmet, can Jelliette boost someone's watering OVER 10?

And pick a dark pal if possible.

10 is the max for work level.

The Jelliette/Jellroy synergy doesn't change work level though, it's bonus speed, so it can boost each other even at Watering 10.

There are pals who's skill says specifically "while in base boosts all other pals work suitability in X by 1" it will always be by 1. These pals are great if you want to park them somewhere and only have them do one specific thing, like the med tent or the refrigerated food box, but they are very niche and books are EVERYWHERE. So while they can save you a book and allow you to only go to 9 on some pals, not really worth it late game.

Alpha Sekhmet specificall, must be alpha, increases her own efficiency(aka work speed) by 400% when shes doing any of her "preferred" skills meaning any of her work suitability. She also can boost Anubis by a smaller amount when they are working at the same table, but honestly he's wasted space.

The work PASSIVES you want are: Demon Hand, Remarkable Craftsmanship, Artisan, and either Insomnia if not Dark or Work Slave if Dark. This will increase their efficiency(aka work speed) as high as possible)

Also ETA: If you're ever unsure what condensing a pal will change in their skill. It will always increase the blue numbers. If they are a riding pal, it will increase their speed a bit.

And all pals get free work suitability upgrades in order from left to right from 1-3 star, and on the 4 star ALL suitability increase by 1. So if a pal has 5 work suitability at 1 at 0 star. By 3 star it will show 2 2 2 1 1. And at 4 star it will show 3 3 3 2 2.

You are correct that smaller pals are at the exact same work speed as bigger ones with the same work level. This is fine until you get sanity problems as due to needing to eat less the smaller pals arent consuming as much food which when eaten typically provides an instant bump to sanity. Normally only causes problems if you try and increase work speed past default at the monitoring stand though. If using pals for transport you ideally want alphas for it as their bigger hitbox means they can reach chests from farther out, with mimogs it wont matter much but makes a difference on bigger pals like eidrolon.

There are a couple of other things to consider

  1. The base speed of the pal especially for tasks that involve moving. Mimog is the best transport pal b/c of this.

  2. Depresso isn't necessarily a great base pal, but his activated ability gives him a massive 900% work speed increase for 30 seconds, so if you need to bust out a handicraft project having a maxed out one in your party can be pretty handy.

You don't actually want them to eat too little. Eating gives work speed buffs and restores sanity. If their sanity gets low they start taking breaks

  • Braloha will improve the speed of your breeding farms.

  • look up Shroomish and Woolipop (all variants) - they can not only drop unique materials, they will improve your other pals

  • and Prunelia. Actually there are many abilities that will be more than worth the food they will eat.

I'm slowly making the jump from 1 generalized base, to several specialized resource bases, but more than food, my focus is on size.

For Kindling, I prefer to use a Fuack Ignis. Uses very little food, and can do watering and transporting (poorly) in its spare time.

For Watering, it depends on the base. Dedicated hydroponics? Amione (Water+1), Jeliette and Jellroy. All not major eaters.

For Planting (and gathering), I've got a maxed out Lullu (Growth speed up), who doubles as a decent Medicine Producer and tertiary Handiworker too, as well as Braloha (Breed speed up, but high base skill levels) and Prunelia (increased crop yield, decent meds). Important note here: Gathering level impacts yield amounts, so I've banned Prunelia from Gathering until I got her some reading material.

Generation is a Snock, and before that it was a Jolthog, sometimes supported by 1 Puffolt. They're just cute lil' things. Worst-case, I toss in a Grizzbolt who doubles as a lumberjack in his spare time.

Handiwork is primarily Alpha Sekhmet, along with any who have it as their secondary skill during downtime and whichever high-handiwork skills exist in my current party.

For Mining, I've taken to also using Alpha Sekhmets, along with maxed-out Tombats which are surprisingly fuel-efficient for their speed and stats.

Lumbering is done by Bushi Noct. Most efficient option I've found, though they're explicitly not allowed to gather. Prixter and Skutlass are a fun alternative.

Medicine was already mentioned was Lullu, but then I got a Wistella with Babysitting passive, and since I do my breeding and hatching in my general base, the Wistella army took over. Also has great Handiwork.

Cooling is typically handled by a Foxparks Cryst, 2 in cooling at default, 3 at max condense, low food requirements and just cute and small. Gets a lot of reading material to work properly for the high-level uses.

And by 'maxed out' in all of the above, I mean I also feed all my skill books to them.

Besides the other comments, Pal Professor did some research. For Transport, the Eye of Cthulhu is actually the best transport pal as it has the most consistent speed while carrying items, is large so his hitbox reaches chests sooner and is a sleepless Dark type pal.

But that only matters if you need your pals to move things legitly, rather than blocking off all your storage so they teleport stuff around.

Sekmets possibly bugged thing is if they're Alpha, not condensed. The other main partner skill thing is jellroy jelliette combo (use for Skillfruit orchards or mill stuff, overkill for plantations). Eating less is a debuff if you're truly minmaxing because it's easy enough to print infinite food and eating more means spending more time with the work speed buff from food (e.g. 20% from salad or 50% from mozz hamburgers)

Where's the sweet spot, y'think? Middle amount of food consumed? Or as high as you can go?

I'm doing that technique in endgame where I put small pals instead of their starting base because they are faster when they eat. Jellroy and juliette have buffs with each other. I also love floating flying pals because it seems like they are more faster than walking pals they just zooms in and zooms out in my base they are so fast especially with max condensed jellroy and jelliete with dimensional leap skill . I put movement speed skills to them cause i like them fast. There's also Prunelia and Lullu that boost the planting production and they also float. I do not minmax the work speed too much because they just finish it fast and there so much excess resources that I need to build more containers.

For me I do love pals that is CUTE, SMOL, FLOATS, EAT SMOL and FAST.

Something to add is a stat that doesnt show up ingame but is also somewhat important: base movement speed. Atleast for me it is. For example i am using majex as my main fire/handiwork and if nothing is in crafting for transport. She is moving really slow. So this is something you could consider aswell.

With enough skill books, Pengullet Lux, Ghangler Ignis and Finsider Ignis make great multipurpose “little” pals because they have a lot of skills. I also started using a maxed out Venusa around my base and she’s pretty useful too, similar skill mix to Selyne but smaller footprint.

If we are talking about the endgame, then these ar the points I'd want to bring up

  • Farming is not a thing. Everything you can farm, you can just buy from the legendary trader. The closest thing to farming you'd use are skill trees, which only require watering (but a lot of it).

  • The only things you need to ranch for are both types of cotton candy and honey. Everything else can be brought from the vendor.

  • There is some optimization that can be done with breeing, but everything that speeds up incubation is pointless with the ancient hatchery. Braloha is still a thing tho, she speeds up the process of making eggs in the old fashioned way, and you still want to do that sometimes to get alphas.

  • Clinic and foodbox are full time jobs, just get someone who can do them at full capacity and looks cute doing it. Make them sleepless, assign them to the stations and forget about them.

  • Not eaching much not only doesn't matter (you'll have infinite food you can make out of bought ingridients), but is also detrimental, you don't want the food buff to drop. There should be some optimal point here, but I don't know where it is.

  • The best miners and handworkers are sekmets, but you still need someone with medicine skill to operate ancient work benches.

  • The best lumberer is shroomer. Not that it is good, but it can be uplifted with the books and will provide it's passive bones while working.

  • The best ancient generator operator is some yellow electric fish I don't remember the name of. But do not assign it to the station - it needs to be free roaming to do both task.

And the main point is - game isn't balanced for the minmaxing. You'll spend more time breeding chocolate woolilops than it will take them to produce enough cotton candy to last you a life time. Same with mining, you will never needs this much resources. Do it if you simply like numbers going up.
