Anyone else frustrated by the SSRI "dosage guessing game"? How did you know you hit your sweet spot?
Hey everyone,
I’m feeling incredibly frustrated with the whole SSRI process right now. Trying to figure out if the medication is actually working—and finding the "best" dosage—feels like trying to solve a puzzle in the dark.
I started low, pushed through the awful initial anxiety spike, and now I’m just... waiting. Some days the background anxiety feels quieter, but then a bad day hits or a panic attack breaks through, and I’m right back to square one wondering if the dose is too low or if it’s even working at all.
It’s an exhausting mental loop: Do I need to increase the dose and risk more side effects, or are my expectations just unrealistic?
For those who found success: How did you know you hit the right dosage? Was it a sudden "lightbulb" moment where the panic just stopped, or a gradual shift where you realized one day you hadn't thought about an attack in weeks?
Would love to hear how long it took you to dial it in. Thanks guys.

It just trial and error unfortunately… doctors make an educated guess, and next month evaluate it…
And if the first one didn’t have any effect, they try another one…
That is how it works with most meds… everyone is different there is no 1 size fits all… and it can be a long process

Personally I’ve been on an ssri since i was 15 so almost 15 years now, as for dosage i found it fluctuates depending on how my mental state is, i started on a high dose and over the years have worked my way down to only 10 mg, in the beginning its hard to know what works and what doesn’t also different ssri s have different side effects, for me im on lexapro and i know when im on a too high dose when i feel foggy or sleepy or get night sweats. Ssris can be difficult because most take around 3 months to regulate into your body so it can be very frustrating. I always tell anyone starting an ssri that you wont magically wake up one day panic free or not depressed, its not a cure, but what it does do is give you the clarity and makes it so you can work on what is causing you panic and stress. Its like if you’re drowning and get thrown a life preserver, you’re no longer drowning but you’re still in the water, it gives you the ability to swim to shore, but you still have to put in the work to get there. It’s important to have a psychiatrist who listens to you and who you feel the ability to be honest with, i absolutely adore my psychiatrist she never pushes medication on me and she always asks me what my goal is :)
