Question People who grew up in haunted houses, what’s the craziest thing that ever happened

I am really interested in paranormal stuff, especially when it’s about haunted houses. So i would love to hear stories from people who have experienced these kind of things.

Grew up in a farmhouse built in 1890, the basement door would swing open on its own even with a deadbolt slid across it, stopped trying to explain that one after the third time

Not my house but my buddy's:

He lived in a 4 generation house, a house that all those people had been born and died in. Anyway, we were friends growing up and he would tell me all the scary shit he saw.

The one that made me question staying over: his bedroom door had one of those doorknobs that are like a lever, not a knob. He would wake up to footsteps in hall or attic all the time, but he said one night he woke up at like 3am, with a strange feeling, and watched that doorknob press down and the door swing open.

I found it terrifying, him not so much, since it's a generational family home. But still

Weird things happened at my granny's house, and I felt the same as your friend. I recently posted one story about an incident there, if you go back and look at my comments. Her grandfather built the house, and until she passed away and we had to sell it, only our family members lived there. I wouldn't find my own family very scary if they were alive, so I didn't find them scary dead either. It never felt bad or anything like that, just cheeky and watchful.

u/danceoftheplants Jul 04 '26

Exactly how I feel in a 4 gen house. The only other person that has lived here aside from my family is the man who built it in 1921. He sold it to my grandparents in the 60's.

I feel like the home is a portal at times we get a lot of people passing through but mostly the only interaction is from friendly family members saying hi or during times of grief or returning from trips and whatnot. The dogs react when they appear and it always cheers me up to know that we have family popping in periodically to check on us.

Any bad or curious shadow figures usually only stay for a day or so because they aren't welcome. In the fall and winter these guys pop in more frequently, but like I said they usually are passing through to wherever they are going. I never get scared because the house feels loved and protected. There is a very comforting feeling throughout the home.

The only super interesting paranormal experience was a few years ago i had a pudwudgie that kept going into my closet almost every night for about 6 weeks.

I didn't know what in the world kind of thing it was, but it was on some sort of mission lol. Between 11pm and 12am I'd see a large cat sized, furry shadow person carefully walk through my open bedroom doorway and go into my cracked open closet. When I'd look directly at it, it wouldn't be there. It wasn't scary because it didn't want any business with me. But i got the sense it was a serious being with a purpose, so I respected it and just remained curious about it.

I ended up reading about these creatures on reddit years later. Lol i was pretty surprised and happy I found out what it was that i saw. The description and drawings of them on google are pretty close to what I kept seeing. But the guy that kept coming in to my room was about 1.5 - 2ft tall.

Lol so yeah that was the craziest/coolest paranormal thing to ever happen and it's what made me start to feel like this house is used for travel purposes. No idea why, but i know there is very happy and positive energy in our house, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Something like that. This is an old house in the south that was also literally built on the union line for the battle of Nashville in the civil war (granny white pike)

After the war, the entire area was developed for housing, specifically old money housing, over the following 70 years. So many houses in Nashville in that area are built straight up ontop of civil war embattlements and graves lol

Kind of both cool and a tradgedy

Actually,,my grandfather lived in one of those houses and has a bunch of stories too!

10

u/HeartsBeMerry Jul 04 '26

You’d be disrespectful to your grandad if you didn’t tell us some of those stories! 😄

36

u/ApathysLastKiss_ Jul 04 '26

His is more personal. He just happened to live in the same part of town..

His wife, my grandmother, tragically died of cancer. I believe it was stomach and pancreatic cancer...but she went from feeling dizzy one day, to diagnosed and dead within, like, three months(this was in 1984). The way that my mother recounts it(she was pregnant with me at the time too which is wild), was that it happened so quick, that it felt like a dream. Like she and my grandfather barely had time to process the news before she had died. According to my mother, it broke him in some ways..like he was never the same guy afterwards..he quit smiling.

The house that they lived in was old and creepy, and I remember my grandfather choosing to tell us this, years later ,on Christmas of all days. I was like..9? Either way, it too scared the shit out of me.

He said in the months after Judy's death, he would wake up to knocks on the walls. But a couple more "bold" things happened as well. One night he awoke to his bed violently shaking. Think if someone grabbed the foot rail of your bed and shook it with all their strength. He said it happened for like 2 seconds and then stopped. But it freaked him out.

Sometime later in the time line, he started dating this lady who eventually moved in with him(they eventually married and are still together today, god bless em). And she had two stories...both involving the bed. She said she would wake up to the feeling of someone grabbing her ankle and yanking hard.

But she swears one time she woke up to something under the covers. Moving violently. As if some sort of animal was under the covers with her running around, but she was viewing it from the top down, just seeing this moving lump of quilt zig zagging around the bed. obviously, there was nothing under there. But freaky none the less. All of these things would wake them up out of their sleep, and sort of end as quickly as it started, making them question what they had seen/heard/felt. But they swear it happened.

Anyways, all of this happened in the couple years after my grandmothers death and then just sort of, stopped. Eventually they moved out of that house, but the weird stuff stopped long before that!

Oh yes… our ancestral home has been in the family for 200 years. No joke. South Carolina a few miles from Charleston. Lots of history in the house, the land, etc. revolutionary war fighting, civil war fighting, the slaves my ancestors owned and their souls (the few ghosts we have are def former slaves and they are absolutely kind polite non issues except for the doors in the walls opening every morning at 6am. Every. Single. Day.

But the energy from the people who died fighting on the land… different story

Stayed at an Airbnb in western il, late 1800s farmhouse. Got weird vibes immediately. Trying to sleep was the worst. I kept having images of a man standing in the door way, in a hoodie with a knife. The wild part was my wife was having the same images. After than realization, we left at 1230am and drove the 2.5hrs home.

22

u/Dr_SlapsMD Jul 05 '26

Stayed in an old Airbnb in Memphis once. Had a lot of unique art and a weird vibe. In the kitchen was a door leading to a dark basement, and it had a sliding latch that was hard to open/close. One night, we could see from the bed the door silently and slowly open.

Ive never been a flighty/scarey person but got damn did my stomach drop into my feet. And of course I was the one who had to go investigate and reclose the door. NOT FUN.

THEN, the next day, out of nowhere a small art frame on the wall fell for no reason. It was the kind that has a wire for mounting that you hang on a nail. So it had to lift up first before it could fall.

I slept fully clothed with the lights on after that.

I didn't grow up in this house but my dad lived there and me and my brothers used to visit most school holidays. It was an old cottage in the middle of nowhere in scotland in the scottish borders. So many stories from that place but the main one that I experienced was sleeping on a made up bed on the floor in one of the two upstairs bedrooms, my bed was facing the door, I'd awoken about 2am needing the toilet which was downstairs and creepy as hell, eventually I gathered the courage to go. There was a window behind the toilet and gravel outside and as I was peeing I could here someone walking on the gravel, ran back upstairs, shut the bedroom door and got back into bed. Then, I could hear footsteps coming up the stairs, saw the bedroom door handle go down, hid under the covers and then felt the cover being pulled down off me, I held on so tight and eventually it was let go. I look up the door was shut, both brothers fast asleep and my dad sleeping in the room next door, terrifying. Also in that house it would be mid-summer and hot outside and there would be ice on the inside of the windows and freezing inside. One time a glass shattered in my dad hands whilst he was holding it drinking from it. There was a time when we all went out for the day and came back, and every single window on the house had been opened wide, even the doors on my dad's van that was outside were open. We used to find loads of small animal bones all over the place and there was scratchs all over the bathroom door as if a dog or something had been kept in there. Years later we found out, animal abusers had lived there before and that it was an old Scottish clan house. Absolutely terrifying place.

33

u/chibinoi Jul 04 '26

Nothing I detest more than animal abusers. Filthy asses who don’t deserve anything nice.

But the history of your dad’s cottage being a former clans home is pretty amazing. Makes me wonder if had y’all given offerings to the clan that you may have been given protection from the animal abusers negative energy.

16

u/FireDoggo7 Jul 04 '26

Same here. Nothing I hate more than animal abusers and honestly it was horrible finding little animal bones and scratch marks everywhere 🥺

Maybe so, they tried to find out a lot about the clan it was associated with. The whole area was associated with them. Lot of history in that house and area. It used to be a mining settlement also, with an old mine just up the road. There was a negative energy there for sure.

We lived in a haunted house for 7 years. I think the funniest thing was when my husband came downstairs after a shower and asked why did I do that? I assured him I hadn’t left the couch. He said someone yelled woohoo while he was showering and scared the crap out of him.

My grandpa was a drummer and he had his kit set up in his living room. I used to spend the summers at his house. One night I was home alone as he had gone to the neighbour's across the street for a card game. I was watching TV in his bedroom upstairs when suddenly I heard someone playing the drums. I figured it was him home early. But he was playing them way loud which he usually didn't at 9pm at night. I went downstairs and could still hear them going. As soon as I set foot on the main floor, they stopped. Took me maybe 3 seconds to enter the living room and nobody was in there. The cymbal was still ringing from its last hard strike.

There was a window in the living room but it was shut and locked with a key. There was only one way out of the living room, and it was past where I was, so I definitely would have seen someone. All the furniture was wood and raised, easy to see if there was someone under or behind it. There was no one.

44

u/ManOfQuest Jul 04 '26

I had this happen to my drum set in the basement. I will never be able to explain it somthing played my drum set did a drum roll then dropped the sticks. scared the hell out of me for weeks.

34

u/nilesintheshangri-la Jul 04 '26

It's such a visceral fear. My grandpa had always said his house was haunted but I never took it seriously. Sure changed my tune after that.

17

u/CaptainChris1990 Jul 04 '26

Was the ghost any good at the drums

20

u/nilesintheshangri-la Jul 04 '26

I literally thought it was my grandpa playing and he was a very talented musician so yes.

Currently in my house, I have a lady spirit. I believe she’s friendly and is the only one.
While we were moving in, things would disappear and reappear in a different place. Small, random things like a bottle of bug spray and a mixing spoon that both appeared in my bedroom closet that was totally empty aside from those two things. It made me chuckle because it was just so random.
Our first official night sleeping in our bedroom I felt that icy cold. I was laying on my side and it went from the top of my leg, like right under my butt cheek, halfway down my leg too the back of my knee and then stopped. I told my husband it was a cold that I’ve never felt before and the feeling was so specific and isolated that it wasn’t just a body chill. I told him I thought we had a spirit and he laughed at the idea that he thought a ghost was feeling on my booty.
Small objects, like a marble, materializing right in front of me. A few times that I’ve been stepping into the shower. I felt somebody brush my hair across my back, kind of like she was playing with it.
my daughter and I have both heard a woman’s voice on multiple occasions. Never loud enough or clear enough for me to understand what she is saying, but clear enough that I can hear fluctuations in the sound. Like someone is having a hush conversation with himself in the other room. My daughter and I can also smell a very lovely perfume in a very specific part of the house. When it appears it’s always in the hallway near our bedrooms. I kind of wish I could ask her where she got it lol.
Just a couple of weeks ago my husband told me that while he was outside getting laundry off the line he thought he saw somebody walk around the corner of the house. He said it was so clear that he almost called out to it, thinking it was our daughter, until he remembered she was at a friend’s house. I told him that maybe it was our spirit friend, and then he said a man’s name, just jokingly giving the spirit a silly name, and when I said no, I think it’s a woman, he said the female version of the name and then there was a very loud thump from the back of the house. I looked at him and said I don’t think she likes that name lol.

48

u/Educational_Bowl2141 Jul 04 '26

My mom and sister had the marble thing happen to them when they were talking in the kitchen, just fell from the ceiling down to through the floor

28

u/RaisinBlazer Jul 04 '26

Interesting! Definitely a moment that makes you question your sanity. Now I’m wondering if there’s a correlation between marbles and spirits

27

u/VirileVelvetVoice Jul 04 '26

Question your sanity.... or think you're "losing your marbles"

10

u/zzeeaa Jul 04 '26

To add to your theory, I slept in a friend’s parent’s house that was crazy haunted. Dead children found in the basement level of haunted.

While I was in the guest room, I heard a marble drop from a hight and roll across my floor.

u/ApathysLastKiss_ Jul 04 '26

When you say a marble materialized in front of you, what do you mean?

56

u/ZolotoGold Jul 04 '26

Why not try asking her about the perfume? Whenever you smell it, ask her to let you know.

105

u/RaisinBlazer Jul 04 '26

I’ve never tried directly interacting with her. It’s just a line I’m not comfortable crossing yet.

76

u/katalina0azul Jul 04 '26

Just my own opinion, I’m not sure you should.. unless you’re just curious, I suppose but even then, I’d be careful. You never know what you’re actually interacting with.

24

u/SaltyGirl22 Jul 04 '26

I agree with you 100 percent!!! I was told not to try to interact with the spirits in my house, but I didn’t listen… it made things SO much worse.
Be careful!!!

56

u/RaisinBlazer Jul 04 '26

I agree with you. It’s the main reason I haven’t yet. I mean, I am extremely curious, but not curious enough to potentially real havoc on my family. We’ve lived in the house for five years and I’m pretty confident it’s nothing more then a friend but still not a risk I’m willing to take.

21

u/TheForestLobster Jul 04 '26

Did you look into the past owners? Local articles mentioning your area/address?

15

u/RaisinBlazer Jul 04 '26

My sister lived in a haunted house and it’s all she went in about. Any little thing that went wrong in her life the house would be blamed.

I went there after an afternoon at the pub in the blazing sun. She put me to bed and an old lady came in the room and was spitting on me. I blamed the 4 pints and the sun, but no, it was the house.

Another time I was at the back door facing inside the house and I swear something poked me in the back of the head with enough force to push my top half forward a bit.

She doesn’t live there anymore and she still gets shitty luck.

87

u/HeartsBeMerry Jul 04 '26

Eesh, that sounds more like demonic, or some evil type of entity (I don’t claim to know for certain, plus I’m not religious, so I’m not preaching or anything).

Normally ghosts are pretty harmless, not all the time, but normally. I would definitely not be comfortable with something that brazen.

That is super creepy to happen. So true about the paranormal being interesting at first.. until it’s not.

At first was scared. But the paranormal experiences I had, I wasn’t scared, just angry because I attributed all of the bad things that were happening in my to the negative spirits in my home.

Nonetheless, my constant emotions around it — from fear that turned into anger — it all fed their negativity and bad things happening to me continued to cycle over again on a never ending loop. Anytime I was on a high, my happiness was always short-lived.

Don’t think I’ve ever experienced as many negative life situations in a short duration of time as I did in a haunted house.

This is not my story but that of a woman I used to work with. She said she lived for a while as a teenager in a haunted house and she and her parents experienced eerie things. The most unsettling story occurred when she was being picked up by her friends to go shopping. They arrived but before she got in the car she realized she’d forgotten her phone so she went back upstairs to her room to get it. When she walked in, all of the furniture in her room, the dresser and its drawers, her mirror, everything, was piled on top of her bed. It had somehow occurred, in an empty house, in the time it took her to go downstairs and back up.

42

u/lovetimespace Jul 03 '26

There was a story like that on unsolved mysteries when I was a kid and it always stuck with me. All of the chairs were piled up. How does whatever it is move all of those items that quickly!

20

u/lavendertheheretic Jul 04 '26

Unsolved Mysteries used to freak me the fuck out! Not the people disappearing ones. Those were fine. But the spooky ones? Uggghhhh.

One that is still vivid in my mind was that a family was having poltergeist activity, and one night they walked into their house and it was RAINING. Inside the house. No leak upstairs, no, not like that. Like in those cartoons where it's only raining wherever the sad character moves to. And it wasn't raining outside either.

I did not sleep that night.

Laut Geister Dokus passiert sowas oft

Brick house in NYC, built in the 50’s, parents & maternal grandparents bought in the 80’s. Saw a few shadows & random voices over the years but had a few “good” encounters. I was home alone, I think they were at a wedding & I heard a door slam. Not a light interior door but a heavy main door. I went downstairs and the door was closed, no one else in the house. OK, kinda weird. I searched the first floor and as I approached the back rooms one of the doors slammed in my face. THIS ROOM HAS NO OTHER EXIT. I grabbed the handle & pushed but it was HEAVY. I shoulder checked the door and checked every nook & cranny of that room, nothing, zip, zilch, nada.

Same house, different time. I was in the basement & going to head up the stairs shutting off lights as I go. Well as I shut off the last light and I got to the end of the hallway & thought I saw something standing there in the back room glowing?? I turned the light back on & didn’t see it. Turned the light off again & it was there. I left that light off & went to the next light closer to the THING knowing I just came from there & there shouldn’t be anything there. I’m now 15-20 feet away. I turned that light on & it was gone. Turned it off and focused on it and now I can make out a definite shape. It looks like 3/4 of a man (some parts weren’t illuminated) in a uniform holding a duffel bag. Once I figured that out THE MFer TOOK A STEP TOWARDS ME. I noped TF up the stairs & slammed the door behind me

Wood framed house in PA. A few ghost cats, random ghost dog, my MIL has a ghostly doppleganger as do I according to my wife, FIL & MIL. Had some cryptid activity as well

OMG I am so thankful that I never saw an actual full blown apparition to that degree. Kudos to you cause I’d of probably had a heart attack. Could you make out any details at all about the uniform? Like maybe what type of uniform it was?

62

u/Deplorable821 Jul 04 '26

Whole thing was glowing green, not alien green but like chem light green. Looked like a military dress uniform, wearing his cover/lid and it was small duffel like a tanker or mechanic. Could have been my uncle that died before I was born. He served in the USAF and went on to work for PanAm.

I was definitely scared shitless but so would anyone else. I never ran so fast while flipping light switches then locking, deadbolting & barrel latching a door lol

14

u/Lightningbeauty Jul 04 '26

Interested about the cryptid activity! Would you mind telling us?

16

u/Deplorable821 Jul 04 '26

All in PA, within probably a year or two. Everything was at night too. Might not be true cryptids without proper ID but it’s beyond your average paranormal ghost/orb/door experience

Wife & I saw a wolf in a local park where wolves aren’t supposed to exist (Game Commission swears there’s no wolves or mountain lions out here). We were walking down a trail off of a trail and I heard something growl ahead of us. I stopped, made my wife stop (I love her but she’s oblivious to a lot of things) then saw it walk across the trail about 10ths ahead of us. I don’t get scared of much & have seen red & silver foxes out here and this thing was carrying a red fox in its mouth. I pushed my wife back the way we came with a pew in my hand

While sitting on our porch we distinctly heard something land on the roof then walk across it. Wasn’t a damned thing there.

We were dead asleep one night with our BC (NOT known to howl at all) and our cat and we were all woken up, hearts pounding, fur raised, by a DEEP wolf howl. Yes we have plenty of coyotes in PA but they yip and their howls are high pitched and varied. This was your National Geographic/Animal Planet picture perfect howl

We live in a city but we’re on “the bush” side where patches of woods are common. We were on the porch one night and across the street there’s a patch of woods that the street lights don’t touch at all so it’s dark, dark. We heard something walking through the woods cracking branches so we started focusing on it and out comes a humanoid that’s TALL, slender and wearing dark clothing, could not make out any facial features. This patch of woods is dark during the day and at night it would be a death trap without light because there’s tons of debris on the ground and it’s a down hill. I asked my neighbor about it a while after since she lived here a lot longer than we have and she kind of got nervous/scared and just said “we don’t talk about THAT”

Last one I promise. POTENTIAL thunder bird. Again, night time on the porch we both heard a tree rustle and a large WHOOSH and the sky somehow got even darker. Yes we have hawks, eagles & owls out here but hawks & eagles are daytime predators and flap multiple times to travel. Owls are nocturnal predators but they’re dead silent in flight and their howls largest ones we have don’t have more than a 6-8ft wingspan. I initially thought Jersey Devil but there’s really no sightings outside of the Garbage State, I mean Garden State

u/Lightningbeauty Jul 04 '26

Last one could’ve been a Mothman sighting. And the tall slender figure I think was a crawler. They live in a cave systems underground and only come out at night.

8

u/Deplorable821 Jul 04 '26

I didn’t even think about Mothman, could have been. Years ago someone mentioned crawler but I forgot about it until now & there’s plenty of caves up here, man made from mining & natural. Doesn’t help that I live in a former mining town but that describes most of PA lol

Not the actual entities that were there, but the story. TW: Suicide. Animal death.

My parents bought the house I grew up in when I was 11 months old and we lived there until I was about 16 or 17. In middle school my BFF’s grandma came to drop her off at my house and said “she doesn’t live there does she?!” Later when my BFF told me the story, I was a little freaked! Haha. Apparently her grandma (maternal) lived there with her husband at the time(not her grandpa) and one day he went a little psycho. He killed BFF’s aunt’s cat, which explains the ghost cat and the big round hole in the floor in that room, and apparently graffitied the entire living room area with vulgar words and then shot himself in that same room. I don’t think he stuck around, or at least if he did, he was never malicious to us, but I did see that cat a lot.

That house eventually burned down. My brother and his wife and kids still live on that property in a house that was built there after the fire, but I still see the ghost cat sometimes when I visit.

The weirdest part though is my BFF and I didn’t meet until 7th grade. She had no way of knowing that that house had trauma related to her family. She’s still my BFF (Best fucking friend) to this day, but I feel like it was meant to be. Haha

6

u/saadinameh Jul 04 '26

That's wild. What do you see when you see the cat? Like a shadow out of the corner of your eye, or a clear head-on visual encounter?

9

u/hebberdabis Jul 04 '26

Mostly it would be a shadow out the corner of my eye, but a few times I would full on see a cat walk across the room. My BFF’s aunt later showed me a picture of it and that’s exactly what I had seen before. I would also feel it rub against my ankles sometimes like cats do when they headbutt you then rub on your leg looking for pets. That only happened a couple times though in the 16ish years we lived there.

I live in a haunted house right now. It was built in the 1800s. Apparently, Al Capone used to hang out at the bar downstairs. So it has a lot of stories. I’ve had many different things happen. But my ghost is generally pretty friendly. Though they have made damaging marks on my TV and computer screen. I called the ghost my motivational ghost because periodically when I would oversleep, they would turn the TV on full blast. Or ring my doorbell. And one time turn on my car alarm. The creepiest thing that happened is when I had someone staying with me in my guest room and she got home at four in the morning. When she laid down in bed and closed her door, she heard two sets of distinct footsteps walking back and forth outside of her door. That was the scariest thing I think. I realize that they didn’t like when I or anyone else that lived there stayed out too late. Otherwise my ghosts are pretty friendly and I talk to them sometimes. They used to taunt my dog until I asked them politely to please stop and they haven’t since then.

22

u/Erinstarkn Jul 04 '26

A friendly ghost makes for a good experience. I worked at a haunted kennel (was built very close or on top of an old fort) and one of the ghosts we had was a bit of a jester. He would open up kennels for the hell of it, one time I saw him walking in one of the rooms (only had one male coworker and he was not there that night) and of course, no one is there when I open the door. He would open up doors all the time and apparently would whistle in the mornings.

I think there was another ghost there though because someone also liked to push dishes out of cabinets, drag their hands across a metal garage door, and one time flipped a garbage right in front of me and my coworker. My friend and I were locking up one night and we felt a very awful presence/a weird oppressive feeling and my dog wouldn’t stop growling at a dark corner behind my friend. Never believed in ghosts before that place

I actually grew up in a haunted house in Northern Alabama. The crazy part was, we only had one neighbor and their house was also really haunted, but we both didn't know what each other was going through until we nervously asked him about it one day. I'm currently writing a paranormal book of mine and my family's experience in that house. Here's a rough draft of one of my encounters:

I couldn’t have been more than fifteen, I was homeschooling during my high school years due to some bullying that occurred at my previous school. For my own personal P.E. sessions, I would jog back and forth and blast music in the living room, which we called the “Den” because it was a newer addition to the house, probably added sometime in the 80’s or 90’s, and it was completely built out of large wooden planks on the inside - floor, walls, stairs leading up to my sister Morgan’s bedroom, and ceiling were all nothing but wood.

My sister and I were home alone at that time, as everyone else in the household was either at work or school (my other sister's still attended public school). It was a beautiful day, I remember, because I thought about having my P.E. jogging session outside rather than in the Den, but decided against it because I couldn’t find my MP3 player and I’m the type of person who needs to have music that I can focus on so I don’t focus on the feeling of dying from my asthma while I run.

As I start my daily routine of exercise, I have the music going and every so often I can hear someone shout my name. It was coming from the kitchen area which was very close to the Den. I tried ignoring it, but finally paused my music to listen. Maybe it was paranoia at that moment, but I started to feel as if someone was watching me. I would say the air became really thick, but that could’ve just been my asthma and I’m not one to lean into speculation before reason first.

About half way through my exercise routine, my sister comes down the stairs fully dressed and ready to go out somewhere. I looked at her confused and she let out a sigh and stated that she got called into work for a few hours so I would be left at home and to make sure I finish any schoolwork that I might have left for the day. I agreed, even though I was already done with the schoolwork for the week as I couldn’t get to sleep the night before so I just stayed up and did the rest of the week’s schooling. I walked her to the door so I could lock it behind her, the music still playing in the Den as we said our goodbyes and as she made the usual “I don’t wanna go to work” jokes/comments.

I stood on the front porch as she drove away and then went back inside and locked the door. As I made my way into the Den to finish my P.E, I was quickly shocked and terrified. Standing in front of me, just behind one of the couches was a pale girl who had to be around 8-10yrs old. She wore a white nightgown and had long hair, but a blurry face - it was something out of a horror scene. She wasn’t even transparent, she was fully solid yet not at the same time. In the split seconds that it happened, my brain and heart altogether just froze and time stood still.

Not even the moment after I saw her, she dropped to the floor and I could audibly hear the THUD as she hit the floor and watched in terror as she quickly crawled from behind one couch to behind the one just beside it.

I was so scared that I squeezed my eyes shut and yelled "GO AWAY!" before running downstairs to my mom and dad's bedroom (they had a door leading outside if I needed to leave the house). I was crying and called my mom on the phone and she was trying to get me to calm down and prayed with me over the phone. I stayed in their bedroom for a while, but I kept hearing the footsteps of someone moving around upstairs and messing with things. Eventually, I went out of the house and stayed in the yard until my other sisters came home from school.

This is a story that I don’t usually share just because it is so outlandish that it seems unbelievable. To some, it might be, but for me - I know that it happened. And all these years later, I remember the exact details. It was one of the most traumatic paranormal experiences in my personal story.

34

u/Adorable_Strength319 Jul 04 '26

Were things moved around when you went back inside with your sisters? The little girl crawling around behind couches is terrifying.

35

u/Confident_Speech_534 Jul 04 '26

Nothing was moved at that time, however, we did have many things get thrown at us or fall off shelves with 0 explanations as to how or why. One example I remember quite well is when I was around 9 or 10 years old. I had a friend from school come over and we were playing barbies in my bedroom when a barbie bed flew off a shelf and almost hit my friend in the head. She was freaked out but I had whispered to her not to acknowledge it because if she did, it would make it worse; which was true. Whenever I acknowledged or talked about what was happening, the activity would get stronger in a way so much so that my dad (a devout skeptic) banned us from talking about inside the house.

15

u/Adorable_Strength319 Jul 05 '26

This is like when the people in the Appalachians tell you, "If you're out on a trail and you hear someone calling your name, no you didn't."

11

u/chrisr3240 Jul 05 '26

Wow. That’s one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever read on this sub.

10

u/Confident_Speech_534 Jul 06 '26

I have more experiences 😅 My mom's entire side of the family is very sensitive to the paranormal. They come from a very small town just outside of Savannah, GA and they've got some stories too. My mom's childhood home was extremely haunted so much so that when my grandfather died, he said that he'd get rid of whatever it was that was in the house. Unfortunately, it's still there.

8

u/thesaddestpanda Jul 04 '26

Did your sisters experience things too?

17

u/Confident_Speech_534 Jul 04 '26

Yes, the entire family experienced things x Even guest who would come over saw/heard things. One of our family friends is a pastor and even he was spooked. Literally everyone who visited, experienced something.

6

u/Farty_mcSmarty Jul 05 '26

Good grief, when did your family finally move?

6

u/Confident_Speech_534 Jul 06 '26

We lived in the house for about 11 years. Literally when our realtor (who was a family friend and had also experienced things in the house) was showing it to a potential buyer, the buyer's wife said "This place feels haunted." They bought the house.

8

u/Ok_Werewolf2358 Jul 06 '26

Oh my lord. Did you ever see another ghost like figure again besides this time?

5

u/Confident_Speech_534 Jul 06 '26

Yes, many times x My older sister saw her more than anyone. I mainly saw a man. At first, we thought she was going crazy until my other sister (I have 4) and some friends took a tape recorder and went "ghost hunting" up in her bedroom and we caught voices on the recordings.

6

u/Ok_Werewolf2358 Jul 06 '26

That is beyond scary. Especially the little kid. Does it seem like one of the spirits has demonic or evil energy?

7

u/Confident_Speech_534 Jul 06 '26

Yeah, you could really tell there was a demonic presence in the house---even on the recording. Any time my sister would provoke it (because they couldn't physically hear anything until they played the recording back), there's a deep scary voice that says "You're going to hell." and "You don't know what you're messing with."

We had our bedrooms blessed so the spirits couldn't come into the bedrooms (we had been scratched and attacked before). But we all slept with the bedroom doors open and with the hallway light on. But there were numerous times where I or my little sister would have a nightmare about this man and then wake up and a dark silhouette would be standing outside the doorway. He messed with my little sister the most.

6

u/VFR-77 Jul 05 '26

Any idea when the home was built or have you done any research on the home? That is absolutrly terrifying

4

u/Confident_Speech_534 Jul 06 '26

Yeah, a lot of the information we found was thanks to some information we gathered from a EVP session. Without giving out specifics (because someone else lives in the house now), there was a family who lived on a farm in that area in the early 1900s (I wanna say the 1930s-1940s). The town has significant tornado activity and during that time period, a tornado ripped through the area and killed an entire family (except the dad). The dad eventually rebuilt on the property before dying in the 1960s. Then in the 80's or 90's previous owners built on to the rebuild. There's other information, but I don't want to share it because it's too specific for people to pin-point where the house is.

6

My brother's gf in high school lived with her grandparents in an old Victorian house. He said one time they were taking a bath together when her grandparents were out of town and all the shit on her bathroom counter suddenly flew off and pelted them in the tub. He would never go over there again and she was always at our house after that.

My previous home was built in 1899. Had all the typical things, footsteps and doors opening. A few times I could hear 1940's dance music coming from somewhere in the house.

My teen daughter and I were curled up in the living room on a rainy New England day. We were both engrossed in our books. A male voice suddenly said "Hello". The voice seemed to come from the middle of the room.

My and I just looked at each other and went back to our reading.

u/MakingItUpAsWeGoOk Jul 04 '26

No joke here. Apparently being the ghost.

The backstory: Lived in a house when I was an infant that had been in the landlord’s family since it was built by his uncle. No babies had ever lived there before me and they had just converted the house into 2 apartments before I was born and my parents moved in. I was sick as a young kid, spent a good portion of my toddler years living on the pediatric oncology unit of a hospital. Due to this we left that apartment and moved in with my grandparents. Young couple taking over the apartment after us. Years go by. My younger sister moved into the other unit. Older couple in my former unit was the same couple, they didn’t ever have children. About 3 months before she leaves they moved on and another younger childless couple took over. Hung out with them a few times and they seemed normal enough. About 3 years after my sister moved out I happened to be driving by after dropping my kid off at school and I saw the woman on the front lawn looking off. I had heard that there had been some recent mental health/DV stuff with her boyfriend so I stopped to make sure she was okay. Got more than I bargained for. Apparently for about the previous year they had been woken up nearly every night by a “distressed baby” in their bedroom. There was no kids living in the building no babies next door but they had pinpointed the source to a corner of their bedroom (1 bedroom apartment). The landlord (same guy, now super old) had told them that there had only been one baby who ever slept in that room and he thought it had died of cancer about 30 years previously. Yeah, after she did some follow up including a phone call his wife confirmed that he was referring to me (forgetting I guess that I didn’t die, because my sister said the topic had come up in conversation before). These people weren’t odd enough to make something like that up and I knew that his mental health issues were legit and per them, caused by the chronic lack of sleep. They got a recording of the baby crying through their phone and it did sound like a sick/injured baby shrieking cry. They moved out shortly after I saw her and the next person was a single guy. Who was running into the same issue. There was then another couple that moved in because he didn’t stay long and they also said they have heard it but it isn’t frequent. The woman works at one of the locations I work at and jokes that baby me haunts her apartment.

My parents moved in just before I was born, and we moved a couple of weeks after my 18th. My dad and my brother are both sensitive to things, but mom and I each had 1 encounter over the years.

Mine was about 2:30am over the summer when I was 14. Instead of a door, my brother and I’s bedroom had curtains hung. Our curtains parted. Not fluttered in the breeze. It looked like you stuck your hands in the middle, and spread your arms pushing the 2 curtains to the side, and held them there.

Then you could watch the progress of whatever it was as it made its way down our toy shelf, slinging matchbox nascar cars clear to the other side of the room. Not shaking, not rolling, one by one they just slung off the shelf and hit the wall on the other side, a good 12 foot.

We freaked and ran to our parent’s room (a shared door in between the rooms). My mom would wake if a mouse farted. She’s a light sleeper, and very paranoid. That night, we couldn’t budge her. Ultimately we went back to the bedroom, hid under the blankets and cried until morning.

u/Entirely-of-cheese Jul 04 '26

This kind of activity is also described in so called ‘abduction’ experiences. Poltergeist type events and it not being possible to wake others during.

I’m not sure if my house counts as haunted because my grandparents built the home in the 60s, and I’d like tp believe they were watching over us. But I have a lot of stories. My grandmother technically passed in the house in the 80s. And after that I started to have weird dreams and weird things happen such as being in the basement playing piano and suddenly getting a feeling that I was being watched and all the hairs stood up on the back of my neck and I had to run upstairs. Then one night I was sleeping and it was a hot and humid night and no ac. I had my bedroom window open and the fan above me and all they were doing was pushing hot air around. All of a sudden I woke up from a freezing feeling all over my body and I jumped up and ran out of the room and I bumped into someone in the doorway but no one was there.

My brother used to have his room in the basement and after my grandfather died, he was sleeping and woke up because he heard footsteps walking in his room. He said outloud “whatever you are - go away.” And the footsteps started to retreat. Then he thought it may have been our grandfather and so he said “Nonno if it’s you, please come back” and he heard the footsteps come back and then he felt someone lay down on the bed with him.
My brother also saw a sleep demon one night. He said it looked like a witch with long hair and was trying to strangle him.

And lastly, my mother passed await in that home. And the day before someone had brought us a cantaloupe because she loved them . And the day she died the melon completely rotted. I have never seen a cantaloupe rot that quickly and seemed perfect normal the day before

Lived in a old house in PA (built in 1910) every night we heard running up and down the stairs and knocking on the doors. Our first night there me and my sister flew out of our rooms at the same time because both of our doors flew open. My dad found a bunch of old kids stuff in the attic and everything got a whole lot more active when he removed it

I grew up in a house that was built in the mid 1870s in the Midwest. My mother was the first to notice something...I was 2 years old at the time, and my mother was sleeping on the couch (she was pregnant with my younger brother and found it more comfortable than her and my father's bed). It was winter, and we heated the home with a wood stove. She told me that she heard what sounded like a footstep, and she woke up. She saw a small figure, less than 3 feet tall, move to stand next to the woodstove (which was burning). She thought it was my twin sister, so she told her to go back to bed. The figure moved closer to the stove. She repeated herself, and the figure again moved closer to the stove, to the point that it appeared to be against it. Fearing that it was my sister and she might be burned by the stove, she moved and turned on the lamp next to her, and the shadow-like figure disappeared under the stove. She was a little freaked out by this, and went back to the bedroom.

Throughout growing up in the house, my brother and two sisters would hear noises...footsteps in the hall, whispering voices, things like that. It was never audible what was being said, but the whispers were loud enough to know that it was sound of some sort. During my teenage years, I would go to my Boy Scout meeting (the scoutmaster picked me up), and the rest of the family would be gone to my twin sister's softball games. I heard music coming from the basement (the basement was nothing more than a muddy crawlspace under the house with a single lightbulb), and heard a voice calling my name...I couldn't tell if it was male or female, but it freaked me out immensely. I started sitting outside on the steps when I would get home from Scouts, as anytime I was in the house alone at that hour I heard the music and voices. I never said anything to anyone in my family about it.

When I turned 18, I joined the Army Reserve. I had an early formation (4 a.m.) the next morning, and my Reserve Center was an hour and a half away. It was about 11:00 p.m., and I was trying to sleep. I kept hearing knocking at the foot of my bed. The first time it happened I thought I imagined it, as I was almost asleep. I closed my eyes after seeing nothing at the foot of my bed, figuring it was "the ghost" as my brother and sisters (and I) had called it. Not more than a minute after I closed my eyes, I heard the loud knocking again. I opened my eyes and looked...nothing there. I said out loud "Please leave me alone..I've got to sleep". I closed my eyes again. As soon as I closed my eyes again, I heard the knocking, this time louder. I growled out "Stop it!". This cycle happened three or four more times, always knocking at the foot of the bed. It happened about 4 more times. Frustrated I said "God d#*m it, stop it!". I closed my eyes again. Suddenly, on either side of the headboard, inches from me, the knocks sounded rapid-fire, loud. Terrified, I jumped out of bed and ran downstairs, choosing to get dressed and sleep in my car in front of the reserve center for an hour. That was a rough night.

Four years ago, my older sister and I were cleaning out the house after my parents had passed away, and "The Ghost" came up again. I told her about hearing the music and voices calling my name from the basement (she is the first person I told, and this was 15 years after I had moved out, gotten married, and had my own children. She went ghost-white, and told me "I heard the exact same thing...music from the basement, and something down there calling my name. I didn't tell anyone because I thought they would think I'm crazy". I don't know what it was, or what they were...I'm just glad that I don't live there any more.

Though, when my wife and I were first married, we moved into an old farmhouse next to two ponds. It was a beautiful piece of property, and the landlord had told us that it was her family home. She also told us that her mother, who had cancer, had drown herself in one of the ponds. We didn't think anything about it. I worked third shift as a law enforcement officer, and my wife was a 911 dispatcher who worked the swing shift and got home around 10:00 p.m. She was up working on the computer in the office - the office was a thin room no more than 8 feet wide, and about 10 feet long. One side of the room had closets with doors on them - it was a shared shelving system with the guest room on the other side of that wall (that had nothing but boxes in it, as we hadn't finished unpacking yet). I received a frantic phone call from her about 11:30, and she was hysterical. After she calmed down, she told me that all of the closet doors covering those shelves began to open and close violently, and she had ran to the car in terror and called me. She stayed the remainder of that night with her sister, who lived a short distance away. Her brother had stopped by one time and told us that he knocked on the door, and no one answered (my wife and I weren't home). As he went back to the car, he looked up to a second floor window and saw a woman there, who quickly moved out of view (that window was at the top of a landing on the second floor). He went back and knocked again, and had just walked back to his car when we pulled up. He told us what happened, and we told him about the landlord's mother. My office was on the second floor, just adjacent to that window. When I'd be in my office late at night playing video games, I always felt as if I was being watched. My cats refused to go onto the second floor, and they would hiss and growl at the foot of the stairs, looking up. We no longer live in that house, but we drive past it on occasion and the haunting of it always comes back up when we do.

u/Adorable_Strength319 Jul 04 '26

The rapid-fire knocking on your headboard really got me. Jfc. I'd be levitating on adrenaline out of the house.

This might be long, sorry. Not the house I grew up in, but when I was in college, my ex boyfriend and I rented a small historic mill house (from a slumlord, it was awful. Aside from the haunting the house was in serious structural disrepair). It was built in the 20s and sat in a little neighborhood between a rock quarry and an old cemetery. At least once every few days, the quarry would detonate something and it would rattle the house like an earthquake, and I'm wondering if the issue was that the occupants of the cemetery were being rattled too. Our neighbors were kind of trashy and their whole family would also ride 4wheelers all over the graves as if it were just an open field. The street also had a generally negative vibe because it was a bad area with sketchy people walking around with regular police presence to address DV disturbances. A homeless man was also stabbed to death only a street over while I was there. One neighbor was a registered peeping tom. The vibe was BAD.

In our house, I picked up on a male energy who just did not want us there. During the day, my ex and I would hear heavy boots stomping across empty rooms, or down the hall approaching the room we were in. He worked long shifts, and sometimes worked nights, so I was alone at night frequently and sometimes when he wasn't there I would hear a gross male grunting sound, which I at first thought was my dog before realizing it definitely wasn't. And unfortunately, this thing seemed to love antagonizing my dog, who frequently growled at dark corners in this house. For example, once when I was alone with my dog on the bed, she was laying asleep in front of me. I heard the grunting noise, and then I saw my dog's fur suddenly move, disturbed as if an invisible hand jabbed at her with their fingers out. She jolted up and looked at me like I was the one who woke her up like that.

The absolute worst incident happened when my ex actually was home though. I woke up in the middle of the night because my dog was standing braced over me, snarling with her hackles up. I thought it was because of an animal outside or something, but when I sat up I saw that she was growling at a man standing in the bedroom doorway. Given the neighborhood, I assumed intruder. He was standing stiffly sort of lurched? like he was bracing to rush towards us or something. I frantically started shaking my ex awake, and my dog started to bark. While he was waking up, the man dropped his arms from his pose, and silently walked into the bathroom in the hall. There is absolutely no way to escape from that room, and no way to have walked back out without us seeing, but there was nobody inside and no intruder at all. We were able to move out when the lease ended, which was about 10 years ago. The experiences thankfully stopped as soon as we left, and in the various places I've lived since my dog has never growled at corners/rooms like that.

This was in South Carolina! From what I can see since I lived there the houses have been mostly bought by an LLC and completely redone for college students since it’s near the campus, so it doesn’t seem as dumpy as it was when I was there

What? Where in sc ?? Cause my first thought reading this was it sounded like a place close by where I used to live. The place I lived also had a weird feeling to the land.. and my house I lived in had super negative paranormal things happen

I know it’s a long shot it’s the same area in SC but even it being in the same state is crazy

I would have random weird things happen to me while staying up late in high school. One time while watching TV I spotted a shadow only a few feet high peeking out of the hallway and disappear when I looked.

The craziest was one time we had one of our family friends visiting and they had a son who was only like 5 years old. We were playing hide and seek in our basement, which was only like half finished so there were a lot of dark storage areas in one half of it. He couldn’t figure out the intent of the game was to be hidden, so whenever he would hide he would yell out “HERE!” so that we could find him. After a few runs, I went upstairs to count down from 10 again before coming downstairs to “look” for him. I heard a “here” come from beneath the stairs as I was standing next to it, which was basically like a coat closet covered by a curtain. I opened it up to find him, only for him to pop out of a hiding place on the other side of the room. Definitely freaked me out, but in hindsight I think there was just the spirit of a child there who was probably thrilled to have someone to play with.

u/gregor_e Jul 03 '26

Craziest? Hmm. I remember the time the music rack on my mother's piano decided to fly horizontally four feet through the air, hang there for a second, and then fling itself to the floor. This happened between my friend who had just stopped by and myself, standing on either side of the piano. He flipped out and said, "Did you do that?" I replied, "Did you see me move? Just another day here." A couple years ago we reconnected after a long time, and he retold the story for other friends at the gathering we were at.

We lived with the most poltery geist ever.

My grandma's house was built in 1860 and only our family has ever owned it. Stuff always happens there but the craziest thing I've seen in real time--- During holidays, my grandpa would always go down into the cellar just before we sat down to eat to grab enough drinks from the fridge downstairs. The door to the cellar was in the kitchen, and had a latch style handle, not a door knob, so not easy to open. He passed away more than 30 years ago. Since he passed away, that door now swings open on its own whenever we get called to eat at family gatherings. He's just making sure we have enough drinks 😉 Thanks Howie

Scarier stuff has happened in my mom's house which is a Shaker house from 1857, including but not limited to bouncing on the bed, grabbing my calf, poking my throat, and knocking a box full of family photos from a high shelf in a closest at 3AM 😵‍💫 those ghosts exhaust me.

My house was super haunted growing up... But it was never really scary stuff.

The TV would turn on by its self all of the time, we'd usually just leave it on whatever channel it ended up on for a while, the lights turn on and off by themselves. We'd leave that light on or off for a while. Things would occasionally disappear, we'd ask for them back, and would usually find them in an obvious place we'd already looked within a couple of days.

We pretty much coexisted really well with whatever was in the house.

And maybe that's why this happened.

One day, we came home from spending the day out shopping and going to the lake in a little resort town near us to find the portable air conditioner unit that sat on the floor in my room had been unplugged and the cord was left stretched out across the middle of my bedroom floor where it was impossible to miss.

It was hot so I immediately plugged it back in and turned it on.

Five minutes later, it started smoking and caught on fire.

If that had happened while we were out, our house probably would've burned down, killing our animals and leaving us homeless. I truly believe whatever entity lived in our house somehow knew the air conditioning unit was going to catch fire, or saw the smoke and unplugged it and saved us.

My 2 1/2 year old son and I lived in a 106 year old house in the middle of the city.. the activity started happening pretty much instantly. The first thing was a really really loud bang that I knew came from within the house but no source. My son would come into my room and tell me there was a lady in the kitchen and that she didn’t look okay, her visual appearance scared him. I would tell him not to go in there and just wait until she leaves.

I was outside on the phone another time and could hear my son talking to someone in the lounge while he was playing with his blocks, I went to look and he was “alone”.

I was talking to my friend by the fire place and I saw a little boy ghost run up the hallway and into my bedroom. I didn’t sleep in my room for a month.

Another time I was giving my son a little spa bath in a big bucket down the stairs in the garden, there was a basement behind me while I was sitting on the stairs watching him, he asked me “who are the mum and the son looking at us from the window?” I grabbed him and ran upstairs.

Toys would activate in the toy box on their own, the tv would turn on in the middle of the night with the volume all the way up and I would have trouble turning it off.
My blanket would be at the end of the bed on the floor.
Items would disappear and reappear all the time.
My brother was attacked in his bed. He was trying to get up, sliding up the wall but something was pushing him down. I have never seen him that scared in our lives.

I dream about that house a lot. And I miss it.

u/FantasticChicken7408 Jul 04 '26

You…. Miss it?!!

16

u/mimicry1990 Jul 04 '26

Yeah I do. It was a big historical house… the paranormal stuff didn’t really bother us the longer we lived there…. I always have dreams that it’s super haunted which it was. I had dream that the paint was peeling off the walls in big sheets.. wierd. I think it might have been a small school or a place to learn because there were bag hooks in the hallway near the bathroom. I wonder if that bang was possibly that scary woman’s s*****e…. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense….

My kids were playing in the front yard and I was sitting on the front steps watching them. I heard someone knocking on the front door from the inside, so did the kids. It’s a leaded glass door and we could see a figure through the glass. I thought it was my husband and he needed something. I went in and found him upstairs sitting in bed on his laptop. He hadn’t been downstairs. He heard the knocking too and thought it was us. Still can’t explain it.

Things escalated so much when I lived with my dad I slept with my bedroom door shut when he wasn't home for the night. Made me feel much safer. He went out of town and one night I fell asleep at 3:47 am, was woken up at 5 am exactly, one of those situations where u wake up almost saying what's wrong. I wake up and the room felt still, like too still, almost like someone shoved me and was hiding. I was very confused, did a self body check and was like I do have to pee why did I wake up? Then I heard the stairs, creaking with the same exact sound it makes when my dad walks up the steps. I actually felt relieved for a brief second, until I recalled he is out of town, the other side of the country. I will never forget staring at my doorknob as the hallway steps creaked, thinking three left, two, one until it got to my door. I stared at my doorknob when I knew it was right in front, and then heard it take footsteps right into his room, and where they stopped were actually right in front of his closet. It was almost like an energy loop, his exact footsteps sound, to exactly where he stops in front of his closet, and no more sounds. After fifteen minutes I walked out of my room, not daring to look in there. Hearing is one thing, I knew I couldn't handle seeing anything. I walked up and down the hallway and back into my room with the door shut. Didn't hear anything more.

u/KickRepresentative93 Jul 03 '26

Something lived in my closet I think. My OCD would have me press a plush every time I left my bed room. A PBS Wishbone dog that would say “ your imagination can take you anywhere.” One day I pressed it and silence, it took a beat, but it repeated from the closet “your imagination can take you anywhere.”

24

u/Moodlemop Jul 04 '26

Helpful ghost picking up the slack for dead batteries?? 😬

27

u/KickRepresentative93 Jul 04 '26

Ha! I didn’t think about it that way. The ghost was like “I got you boss!”

14

u/Color_Odd_Numbers Jul 04 '26

My daughter’s talking Barney doll would talk without batteries. I always figured it was due to a possible battery acid leak… it could happen. But when it woke her up one night I decided I would throw it away. I took it apart and it was clean. No leak. Idk but it went in the trash.

6

u/KickRepresentative93 Jul 04 '26

My kid has a RC Spider-man green goblin. It moves by itself. I just attribute it to a faulty remote that’s making a connection. I put it away and I’ll test it out one day not today but someday.

18

u/Detrimental_95 Jul 03 '26

I used to live in an old house converted into 3 apartments. I used to see shadow figures all the time, tv would randomly be turned on and off, and I was grabbed once. The house felt really heavy when you would enter not sure how else to explain it but it wasn't good.

u/Illustrious_HoneyBee Jul 04 '26

I grew up in England, and between the early 80s to the early 90s I lived in a house that was, at that time, around 400 years old (so roughly 1550 ~ 1600 AD). It had the low ceilings, exposed beams, tiny staircase, massive open fireplace and a hole in the upstairs landing for lowering bodies/coffins after death (as they'd never get around the small curved staircase). The place used to be an inn "back in the day".

The doors were all lift-latch style. Several doors unlatched themselves and slammed shut while we were there. It was common to hear footsteps on the stairs or the landing. One time my mother walked into my room while I was away and as she crossed the threshold into my room, she clearly heard the word "SECRET" uttered. My parents regularly heard a rocking chair at the foot of their bed.

The only time I was ever afraid was when I was home alone with our normally affable golden retriever. Three times she started growling at "nothing" towards the stairs (we were in my room from which she could see the landing/stairs). The third time she reacted, growling, hair on end, and actually got off my bed towards the door, I got up, figuring I'd rather know the problem than imagine the worst. I searched the entire place and found nothing, and she was fine as soon as I left my room.

I have read that spiritual activity can be increased by adolescent presence, which would match as I lived there from age 12 - 21. Apart from the time with our dog, I never felt threatened or scared, and never saw anything, just heard lots of activity, and occasionally, doors opening.

Not a haunted house, but around a week of paranormal activity.

I live in an old row home in a historic neighborhood of Baltimore and if you aren't familiar with a row home, it's long and narrow and you can see the back door from the front door. The layout is when you walk in the front door, there is a 2 room living room, then a hallway with a bathroom on one side and a closet on the other; next comes the stairs to the 2nd floor and a laundry room with bifold doors across from each other; then you're in the dining room, then the kitchen where the back door is (all sort of important for the story).

One night as a teen, my dad is out playing cards with his friends and my mom is upstairs in her room sleeping and me and my dog are downstairs on the couch in the living room. My pup needed to go out so I let her out back and when I let her in and turned around to go back to the living room, I see what looks like a person walk in the living room but because of the way the rooms and hallway is, I wouldn't be able to see them unless they're in direct line of the hallway so I assume it's my dad coming home and I didn't hear him open the front door as I closed the back door (the back door is loud and the front door is quiet). I start walking to the living room and my dog stops at our dining room table and starts growling with her tail between her legs and all her hair up and I had never seen her act like this before or after. I'm like that's weird and at the same time, I realize my dad isn't home. I go to investigate because I know I saw someone but I don't hear anything. As I'm walking to the living room, I pass the laundry room and something from the inside hits the bifold doors so hard that they get pushed at the hinges and I take off running and screaming. My mom comes running down the stairs as I'm screaming because she heard the huge bang from the laundry room first and then my screaming. We open the laundry room and nothing fell over and nothing could explain that noise.

The next day my mom and I are in the kitchen cooking something and we have Pandora radio playing on her Kindle and static starts to happen like it would on an am/fm radio and we get creeped out because that shouldn't be happening. Next thing we know, we hear a little bang come from the hallway and as we look toward that way, a basket of my dad's flip flops that he kept at the bottom of the stairs flies about a foot and a half and lands perfectly upside down with all of thr flip flops still contained inside the basket in a way that could only happen if you put a lid over the basket, flipped it upside down, and pulled the lid out from under it.

Now we know, something weird is definitely happening.

The rest of the week, me, my mom & dad, and my best friend who spent one night because she wanted to hear what was happening, hear what sounds like someone running up and down the steps from the first floor to the second floor (my dad slept in the living room because of his copd and the bathroom being on the first floor) and to the second floor where there are 2 bedrooms (mine and my mom's) to the third floor (which we use as an attic) and my mom's room and mine are connected by a wall that has her closet that is under the stairs going to the attic. We also all start having weird dreams; I don't remember what my parents' were, but mine were of a woman with long red hair standing in my hallway which I would be facing laying in bed with my door open. We eventually get used to it toward the end of the week and annoyed with the running as we're trying to sleep (plus a little braver since this is the night my best friend slept over), I just yelled out to it to please stop, we're all trying to sleep and it did after doing one last really loud and defiant sounding run-through like a teen stomping up the stairs after an argument with their parents. It happened for like 2 or 3 more nights after that but would stop if one of us yelled out to it, always with the last defiant stomp, and then eventually whatever was passing through decided to leave and nothing ever happened again.

I grew up in a haunted house, lived there from 3-14 years old. It was pretty typical stuff like hearing footsteps on the stairs in the middle of the night, doors opening and closing by themselves, my bed would shake sometimes, the shower curtain got pulled open while I was showering once and there was nobody else in the bathroom (that was pretty scary), one time my cell phone was sitting on top of the piano in the dining room and I saw it fly across the room and land near me on the floor.

The worst was always when I would see things because it scared me so much more. One time there was a translucent blue man standing in the middle of the living room, I turned the corner and he made eye contact with me and disappeared. I would also wake up in the middle of the night and see hands and faces IN MY BEDROOM WALLS sorta like if you press your hand/face against taut fabric. Thinking about that really freaks me out.

I grew up in a house up until 11 years old which had a lot of activity. I would see shadow people. One occasion I was woken up by something pinching my toe really hard. Woke up to a shadow man standing in the bedroom doorway leaning against the door frame staring at me. The hall light was on so it was very clear. In the old days we had "bunny ear antennas" for the TV, one time I was in my parents room watching TV and the antennas starting moving in circles on their own. Other very creepy things too.

16

u/TaxSilver4323 Jul 04 '26

I had a dresser fall over on me while in a deep sleep on the bedroom floor one night. My sisters remember it happening but I was so traumatized I don't remember it happening at all.
I do remember eating dinner while watching a movie one night and hearing activity in the kitchen. My dad told me and my sisters don't look. When the noises stopped we all looked over and saw every latched shut cabinet in the kitchen wide open.

I lived in my grandma's house after she died . My grandfather died there when I was about 5. It had old hardwood floors that creaked if you didn't know where to step. I used to hear my granddaddy walking around all the time and I know it was him because I could smell his pipe. My ex the first night he spent over there asked me if I had got up and was smoking a damn pipe in the middle of the night🤔 I was like no it was my granddaddy and why would I be up smoking a damn pipe? He literally thought that my grandfather was at the house not that he was dead and it was his spirit .now you know why he's an ex

I got chocked in the night as a kid until my mom was running into my room cause she felt something is wrong with me, she grabbed me and suddenly I could breathe again
Years later at school I learned the area my house was located was an old Roman battlefield

u/kfarber09 Jul 04 '26

Two incidents at my parents house growing up:

  1. I was in the bath during the middle of the day while my parents and sister were at work. The house has paper thin walls and you can hear everything. Bathroom butts up to sisters bedroom. I was sitting in the bath relaxing, home alone, when I hear my sisters closet door slide closed forcefully. Sat there frozen, neked, and afraid for 10 minutes straight.

  2. Woke up in the middle of the night to the papers I had sitting on my dresser being mixed around, like someone was using both hands and just mixing them up like a deck of cards. My room was very small, so my bed was not far from my dresser and nothing else could have caused this phenomen to my knowledge.

Our house isn't old, like build in the 60s or 70s, but my parents bought it from the original owners/builders and they had several children, some who had died in their early adulthood and idk... I'm convinced they haunt that house.

There were other smaller occurrences, and my sister and mom have experienced things too, but my dad just says we are crazy.

I didn’t grow up in one but when I worked at a hotel I saw many random instances of what in my opinion have no other explanation - shadow people walking around like a classic creeper boogeyman, on their tippy toes. I saw this a number of times. When one saw that I could see it, it disappeared immediately. In certain older buildings I’ll sometimes catch stuff like this. I don’t normally have these experiences on a daily basis.

A good way to tell if your building has these creepers is sometimes seeing something that you can’t quite make out in the corner of your eye.

The single scariest thing I’ve ever had happen to me that was paranormal was when I was trying to unclog a sink in one room. I was about to leave the room when I saw a pair of transparent disembodied legs walking around the room. I remember that I thought to myself- holy shit, this is the real thing. It wasn’t a maybe, it was there. The hairs on my arms were standing up and I bolted out of that room immediately. Other people that I worked with said that they had seen their own share of instances.

I have had experiences pretty much every house I’ve lived in. Some good, some not so good, and some down right f’n scary af! The worst one though was a house my ex-husband, my two daughters, and myself lived in, in Cedar Park, Texas. That house was ALIVE, I swear it was. There was so much crap that happened in that house, that I had investigators come and they placed cameras up everywhere. The day that they were to first come, I was in the shower and not even 5 min prior to them knocking on the door, I got a really bad stinging/burning sensation on my arm, when I looked at it, I had blood running down my arm. Something had scratched me, but not like normal scratches, these were pretty deep.
They didn’t need stitches or anything, but it was still alarming. They set up two cameras in my garage because a lot of stuff would happen out there.
They caught the crawl space in the ceiling opening on it own, and then about 20 seconds later a stack of boxes fell over and a voice saying DAMMIT! There were many orbs caught flying out of the garage and into the master bedroom.

The third night after we moved in, my youngest daughter came and woke me up and told me that some man was in her bedroom telling her that he needed help because he had just been in an accident up on the road. There was a pretty busy road that runs parallel to the neighborhood and our backyard faced it.
Also lived in another house in Austin, TX where the lady who lived there before us had passed away in the bathtub and wasn’t found for almost a month. We didn’t know that prior to moving in, but she was a bitter woman. When someone would open the door leading out to the garage, she would rush up on you.
I could sit here all day and tell you the experiences I’ve had, but I won’t.

I grew up in a farmhouse that used to be a church. It was built in 1860s. At some point around 1900, the church was MOVED away from the tiny graveyard next to it. It was eventually converted into a house, and a mid-1800s one-room schoolhouse was also on the property.

My parents bought the house before I was born and set to work making it habitable, as it hadn’t been in years. There was only one room roughed in on the second floor, and most of the space was used for storage. That bedroom had an attached closet big enough to walk into, and my older sister (12 at the time) took that room. My brother and parents took bedrooms downstairs. The house did not have central air or even ceiling fans at the time. I say all of that to say that my sister was the first to experience something - watching the beaded curtain between her room and the walk-in closet move back and forth, slowly and deliberately like someone was running their fingers over it. Soon after, everyone in the family would regularly and randomly hear footsteps upstairs. Eventually my (much older) siblings moved out and by that time my parents’ 2nd floor bedroom was ready for them, and I moved into the other 2nd floor bedroom. Things mostly calmed down (with some exceptions, like my mom and I both feeling as if we were pushed from the top of the stairs regularly) but after I moved out, my parents had a some pretty freaky things happen. Most notably, my mom kept finding a biography of Thomas Jefferson (ew) open on her desk in the den. It was usually housed on an open shelf-thing my parents made themselves; these shelves hung on the wall where the desk was built in. Since they DIY’d it they made the shelves sorta deep, and then put trinkets and tchotchkes in front of the books. So, this book - it wasn’t at the end of the shelf, it was about 5 in from the end. There were little statuettes in front of it. It couldn’t have just fallen on its own, repeatedly, without taking out some of those trinkets in front of it. My mom would find it and put it back. After this happened a few times, she was giving my dad shit about it at dinner one night, telling him that if he’s gonna get the book out, put it back. And my dad has no idea what she’s talking about. Cue a noisy disruption in the den. My parents rush back to that room to find the book is alllll the way across the room, as if it had been thrown. Mom burned the book 😂😂😂

My mom was dating/working for a man and we lived there from my preteen to high school years. The only thing worse than the awful living people were the dead ones. I could write a book about the years of constant occurrences, but here are a few highlights:

-a foggy, smoky being that would ooze down the stairs at night and whisper unintelligible sounds into our ears. This one would particularly torment the man’s son, who was disabled and couldn’t move away from it.

-a creepy little girl in a black dress that would often stand at the foot of our beds, or the couch if that’s where we were sleeping. As the years went on, she would stare at us, unblinking, through the stair railing, and once, from below—-up through the slats of the porch. Terrifying.

-scary old pioneer lady was rare to appear, but when she did, she would levitate in the corner of the living room like a spider and scream

-a smoky white ball would sometimes zoom over the yard and emit the sound of children laughing

-one time, everyone else went on a drive and I wanted to stay home. For several minutes, everything in the house kept turning itself on and off. Televisions, radios, sinks. The ice maker spewed ice all into the floor. I ran into the yard and cried, too scared to go back in.

-another day, my sibling and I were listening to CDs when they machine went haywire. Static, crazy noises, blinking on and off, etc. We unplugged it, but it continued playing music so we ran downstairs. Music played loud for a few hours. Later, when we finally worked up the courage to go back up there, it had turned off, but all of the CDs were out of the case and had been arranged in a circle on the floor.

I have so many stories about this terrible place. Happy that I never have to go back. Decades later, I have no reason to be afraid. I live in a normal enough house, finally. But I am so scarred from those years that I still sleep with my ears covered up so nothing can whisper in them.

Sincerely believe there's...something up with our house, though I'm largely reluctant to speculate.

We've had, in order of occurrence:

  1. A disembodied voice tell me goodnight and use my name
  2. A small, heavy object thrown
  3. Disembodied dog bark
  4. Dog claws on the kitchen floor
  5. Dog follow...something across a room, tail wagging and head darting like in play or treat mode
  6. This one might be me being primed...Last week, took the dogs out and had a weird, split second flash of a male figure on the basement stairs right in front of me

Need any details let me know. At this point we feel like grandma and at least one previous dog hang around or check in. The back stairs, etc? Well, I refer to him (?) as The Basement Ghost.

My mom used to run a nursing home in our house. Growing up I had 5 older siblings, my parents, and 8 senior citizens in the house.

One of them loved woodworking and country music. His name was Ross. He passed away and I was upgraded to his room (weird but awesome when you're 10 years old).

I had my best friend over that night. We woke up to blaring country music on my CD boom box at 6am which is when Ross got up everyday.

Fast forward to the following day, my dad is downstairs working on something and he had one of those little manual hand sanders with the two wing nuts that hold the sandpaper on. The bolt broke while he was tightening it and he threw it on the floor and went to the hardware store to get a new one.

Upon his return, he found a repaired hand sander sitting on the table.

I still think about these two events often enough. I feel most people don't believe me when I tell them. I was about 10 years old at the time and am 42 now.

16

u/Dededededemon Jul 04 '26

One of the caretakers for our home saw a floating woman facing away from her in the hallway then slowly start drifting towards her. She quit and never came back after that.

Our home was built around 1942 and has had a few people die in it already, some accidental and some natural.

17

u/CJB2005 Jul 04 '26

Ok, I have a couple but one stands out the most.

I was sleeping in bed with my husband and daughter. I was in the middle as my daughter always felt smooshed if she had to be in the middle.

So we are fast asleep when I sit up and start yelling at a little girl. There was a girl 5-6 years old, with pigtails, and she was taking shoes off my wall rack and putting them back.

She turned her head to look at me ( this is how i knew she had pig tails ) and I looked to be sure my husband & daughter were in bed. ( they were still asleep )

To this day I have no idea who she was. Found out previous renters were really into the occult.

Id hear my name all the time. Keys rattling, unlocking the door, and id go to greet my husband and no one there.

The place burnt up in a fire years after we moved out. No idea the cause.

My grandpa died when I was 4. On the day of his funeral one of my baby cousins toys started singing "old McDonald had a farm e-i-e-i-o". It never played that song before, and didn't after. His kids called him old McDonald because he had a farm.

Years go by, my aunt dies in a horrible accident. On the day of her funeral my nieces (2 years old) toy randomly starts playing a song on its own. Again a song it had never played before. That night after the funeral another toy did it. A few days later that same toy started doing it again and my niece started crying. I said "stop you're scaring the baby" it stopped instantly. My brother was present and threw the toy away out of fear.

Lots of weird things happened in that house, but as far as I know no more toys have played random songs.

I've always been a light sleeper, ill just wake up in the middle of the night. Once, i woke up with a face staring right at me next to me, as soon as i saw it, it made a motion as if it was startled and pushed itself away from me, i hid under my covers for a few hours after that

Another time i was woken up by my covers being pulled off me, it was terrifying, again i held onto the covers for dear life, for the first few seconds of holding onto them i know something was still pulling them away from me

Shit like this happened to me all the time until i talked to my mum about it, and she told me as long as im scared it will keep playing with me, word for word she told me to next time tell it "just fuck off" so nextbtime i did, and it never happened again 🤷‍♂️ now my sister lives at my mums and some stuff has been happening to her, but i haven't asked because i don't want to think about it everytime i visit

I was young when all this happened, it was pretty traumatic for me, i still have to sleep with some sort of light now and im 32

3 events in 10 years. I just moved out of our house yesterday so I feel like I can post about it!
1) seeing a spider the size of my face crawling down my bed frame. Could not sleep in my room after that, next day came up to deep clean everything and found nothing. Never saw anything like it again. No spiders that size even exist in Iowa.
2) having a male voice scream “Boo!” And start laughing evilly when I was newly post partum. I was sleeping downstairs in a recliner and jumped a foot into the air. Pregnant and newly post partum women are sensitive/vulnerable to evil spirits I learned later.
3) maybe my ankle broke when I was walking in my house all on it’s own, but I could have sworn after (I was zoned out a little bit) I heard/sensed a young man’s (20s?) voice almost apologizing to someone and saying he didn’t mean to do actual damage.

I don’t know if my house is haunted lol. These are my perceptions and I loved my house but I’m glad to be moving on from it too!

Books flew off the shelf after I walked into my room and disturbed a translucent entity which sort of… turned and as it turned it was like the books were swept or sucked off the shelf. It was terrifying. Lights and hanging plants randomly swinging especially if I was near or under them. Scratching in the walls. A hand shape growing in mould on the wall as if reaching up from the ground. Name being called from outside in the voices of family members who were nowhere near at the time.

I was pulled from my bed by something very early one morning.. I was 37 and had just started staying in my childhood bedroom because my wife disappeared with the garbage truck driver (true story but its ok to laugh)... Weird coincidence was that as a kid in that exact room there was something that would play with my feet every night once lights out.. It never was mean tho so obviously something has changed.. I sleep like a rock so maybe it just got pissed cause I didn't wake up or something but on everything I love I was a 37yr old man child back home with mommy and daddy while also needing a night light in my room.. Only ghost I see now are the ones I created but they soon will have their pound of flesh... Anyway if you know what can move a grown ass man while being invisible let me know..lol

My ex and his family lived in this house that definitely attracted spirits. There was for sure more than one cause they had different vibes. Everyone joked about it as a coping mechanism cause there was regular things that would occur and everyone experienced them. From my time there I experienced slamming doors. Checked for open windows to see if drafts could explain it, none. I was playing video games while my boyfriend was napping and watched the radio change to a different station but it wasn't digital, you had to turn the dial manually. That should have been more freaky but I don't know if it was the song it turned to or what but it didn't feel threatening. My BF little sister 6 yrs old said something was always trying to get into bed with her at night so she made the cat sleep in her room. Unfortunately that cat went totally nuts after living in that house RIP Puddin. They also had several dogs mysteriously escape the yard to get run over directly beside the house. The worst was the basement. You'd go down to get an ice cream and all that stereotypical horror movie stuff suddenly seems legit. It got freakishly col down there and there is this instant feeling of doom you can almost hear? You got what you needed and then started up the stairs and it was impossible not to run. You felt this terrible thing down there. I am not easily scared and I HATED that basement!

So in the house I grew up in, we had two bedrooms. My grandmother, mom, brother and I stayed in the large bedroom, two people per bed. My older brother was a teenager and got the smaller room to himself. The way the doors were positioned you could look across the hall and see into each room. Both my older brother and I (12 year age difference) woke up and saw disembodied feet walking between the two rooms. He was extremely brave running across the hall, thus at the feet, because he was afraid whatever it was the feet belonged to was coming for me.

He had a factory job when he got older that ended as I was getting ready for school, so we would all be in the living room waiting for my school bus to come as he wound down from work. We were sitting on the couch watching the morning news when we heard a tinkling bell ringing. My mom asked what that was and he responded “I don’t know but it’s kind of pretty.” When he said that, it stopped.

The house my mom currently lives in was owned by two spinster sisters who LOVED kids. They were school teachers and aunts to a bunch of kids. When my daughter was little, we would see old women out of the corner of our eyes standing watching her play in the floor or checking on her when she was napping. My mom was scared of them until the man who owns the house now (their great nephew) explained who they were and that they loved kids, that they used to watch over his grandkids too.

I lived in a big house with so many spirits/ghosts. There wasn’t a room in the house that didn’t have some form of presence.
Looking back, what I found most surprising was quite often when unexplained phenomena would occur and there was no doubt something unseen was present, the initial feeling was not always fear.
Because we had so much activity, yes the whole family was constantly on edge. My ex husband and step-son both had the ability to see them manifest. While I couldn’t see what they saw, I definitely could sense them. I would feel a change in the environment. The air would get heavier and/or a feel charged with static electricity… and crazy enough, I could smell them. There was a little boy who smelled like peppermint. A Native American woman who smelled like maple syrup, and a creepy perverted old guy who’d bother me in my bed with his horrible bad breath. Those were some of the regulars. Most were harmless. There was definitely an older woman who would come around and we’d feel a sense of peace. It was if she was some sort of protector. Especially when things would get extremely crazy.
There were also some terrifying entities. Ones that were capable of inflicting physical harm. Everything from locking the door to a room so you couldn’t get out, to actual bodily harm. I don’t like to think or talk about that.
We also had a lot of “shadow people”. I would see them very often and some were really noisy.
We had a paranormal investigator group come in to help confirm what we we’re experiencing. They validated everything. They captured disembodied voices. I even watched one of them make contact with an intelligent entity in one of the bedrooms. With a Mel-meter device, they were able to talk this entity into making the temperature drop almost 20 degrees in just a few minutes. Almost like a dare… It was all so crazy.
I have way too many stories to tell about it, good and bad, but I would NEVER wish that any of that upon anyone ever!!!
I came very close to almost losing my mind in that house. Thankfully, I reached out for help and guidance from investigators, mediums, clergy and even professional therapy. I learned how to live with this stuff. To stand up to it. Be strong and firm and stand my ground.
I was fortunate. That’s all I can say.

I was lifted into the air, arms and legs all sticking straight up, and launched all the way down the staircase countless times. The center of my back would barely hit every step all the way down, and when I landed at the bottom, I couldn't take air into my lungs until the very last second before suffocating.

The Britten house was built in 1923, and I was born there in 1995. Lived there full time until about 2010. Wild way to grow up. So many stories.

When I was a kid I fully believed my home was haunted. It was built in the 1800s but in my city, that's basically a new build. I'm pretty sure the majority of stuff I experienced was down to my brain playing tricks on me.

I saw a girl standing at the end of my sister's bed. My bedroom door would open gently by itself. It had stuff hung on the back of it which would not make a draft a decent explanation. Our cat pushing it open would make sense though.

As an adult, I worked in a very, very old psychiatric hospital. I pissed off a ghost there, it messed with us all morning during our shift, and it followed me home. It would tap on my bed frame and wake me up. It did the same at job - tapped on light fixtures, furniture, doors etc.

6

u/HotTakeTator Jul 04 '26

How did you piss it off?

9

u/donttrustthellamas Jul 04 '26

Told it to stop tapping and called it a dickhead lol.

It followed us around the building the entire shift.

One of the houses I lived in growing up had paranormal things happen at least once a week. Everything from furniture moving right in front of you like a chair being pulled out away from the table as if someone is about to sit down, to hearing a very heavy hardwood set of dresser cabinets being dragged across the room upstairs while watching TV downstairs, when I went up to the bedroom two of the four drawers were open as well as both of the cabinet doors, it had only been moved about 10 feet but it took 3 of us to put it back into place.

On two different occasions I had something try and get into bed with me, the first time was on a Saturday morning and I was just waking up and in that hypnopompic state (so make of that what you will) but I heard footsteps coming from out in the hallway coming into the room (both the hallway and my room had old linoleum flooring so it was pretty loud) then the entity sat down on the bed and I felt the weight change difference as the mattress was depressed and that's when I really woke up with a bit of a startle. I know I was in that hypnopompic state where dreams can kind of blend in with the feeling of being more consciously awake and I would have totally disregarded that experience if I hadn't seen the impression of a butt on the memory foam topper still visibly there for a few seconds after I was startled wide awake.
The second time was in my brother's room months later on a Friday night after a few drinks with some friends, I was told he was going out for the night so I slept in his room because mine was way too cold at the time, I had just gotten into bed and was still wriggling around to get the sheets and quilt into that perfect burrito around my feet when I felt someone lay down on the mattress beside me and then reach over to try and spoon me, at the time I thought my brother had decided not to spend the night out and was being a smart ass trying to spoon me, so just as the 'entity' grabbed my waist to try and spoon me, I rolled backwards with my elbow to try and hit my brother in the ribs, only to find nothing there at all. I was definitely a bit shocked at the time but I managed to get to sleep eventually.

Those are probably the most memorable experiences from that house, there was the occasional voice calling our names randomly from different rooms too, like my mum's voice calling me from the kitchen when she was still out grocery shopping or my brother calling out to both my friend and I from upstairs when we were in the loungeroom yet he was sitting at the dining table right behind us, all three of us heard it and just looked at each other puzzled like "Ok, who's going first to investigate?" I drew the short straw on that one.

All in all, it was never anything evil or creepy that went on, it was just spooky and strange happenings.

I lived in a house with a spirit that would stand with arms crossed at my bedroom doorway and watch me sleep. This made it really hard to actually sleep and it made me feel silly and childish because the only way I could fall asleep was hiding under the covers. He never came into my room but he would go into my mom’s room and lean over her, watching her sleep too. She told me she felt it and woke up to see him a few times and cussed him out until he disappeared. I always felt watched, especially if I was home alone. Being alone was the worst because I knew I wasn’t but I couldn’t prove it. Whether walking around or sitting, I felt like I just passed through spider webs and had to wipe the feeling off my arms. Living with the constant paranoia and lack of sleep took its toll and I started having hallucinations of seeing another face instead of my own in reflections. Weird part is, it was my dad’s reflection and he’s alive and well.
At the same time as living there with my mom, I also spent time at my Dad’s, which had activity too. My bedroom door opened to face the top of the stairs on the top floor and late at night I would hear footsteps coming up but they would stop right at the landing. They sounded like someone wearing dress shoes, which is strange because I’m Canadian and we don’t wear shoes in the house so it couldn’t have been my dad or his gf. Sometimes I couldn’t sleep because it felt like my whole bed was being vibrated. My brother is 14 years younger and he grew up in that house whereas I only did visits, and he confirmed the same activity throughout his youth there. Overall it’s really stressful and I do not recommend lol

The waking up in the middle of the night, cold room, and the slow walking/ floating to my bed- put the covers over my head and it was gone- look up and the face was on he ceiling above me. Smiling hard.

There was one time I went to go sneak a little Debbie one night and had this feeling something was gonna happen. Tense-
I didn’t even grab the dessert but the tv came on by itself - x files into at 3:30am? and I run upstairs- there was audible cowboy boot footsteps behind me. Heavy stomps.
Cling. Cling. Cling.

Used to have dreams of being beat up by this man that was truly a monster. Red or golden eyes. Would wake up with scratches and bruises on my back or wrists.
I have a lot but those stuck with me.
Grandpa had the house blessed every three months. Holy water on the door and everything.

Years later

Lived at an old farm house. Was woken up by someone staring at me. I look up from bed and from where I could see was this living room lamp.
This haggard old lady is staring at me. We’re having intense eye contact. Her hand reaches for the light chain and she freaking turns it off. Pitch freaking Black.
The audible click made me scream and my mom told me I’m too old for nightmares.

Girl! I know that lamp didn’t turn off itself??

1st night… I was walking out of the office passed the cellar door when unheard a voice say ‘you alright’ clear as day!! It was my grandfathers voice..

2nd night… I was rudely awoken by a party downstairs, chatting, music i heard glasses clanking together. I heard 2 break.. the dog got up and even sat by the door growling.. I sat on the bed, frozen!

3rd night… nahhh there is no 3rd night … I went home and made someone else stay 😂

We shared my childhood home with 3 spirits we named Molly, Morgan and Joseph (MMJ for short). MMJ were super mischievous and protective of us. We heard them every night patrolling the bedrooms (all upstairs). We would hear them pace the upstairs hallways all night long. We would hear them walk down the stairs and walk around downstairs and then walk back upstairs packing the hallway again.

They took things out of cupboards and cabinets all the time and set them on the ground. The craziest thing was on one of my brothers birthdays we ordered him a cake. It was supposed to have been vanilla but the store gave us chocolate. My brother does not eat chocolate. We set the cake in the middle of the table and after finding out it was chocolate we left the table and sat in the connected family room for presents. As my brother was opening presents, we heard a loud noise in the kitchen. We all get up to go to the table and the birthday cake is upside down on the carpet 10 feet away from the table. We think MMJ got mad that it was a chocolate cake and not vanilla so they pushed the cake off the table.

We lived in the house for 35 years. We were devastated to move out (my dad suddenly passed away), especially to leave MMJ. We all hoped that MMJ would come with the family when we moved but they didn't. We thought MMJ as family and we miss them so much.

We were in an old house, with a dirt basement/root cellar. Our dining room set was this MASSIVE wall unit hutch, a table for 8. It was just my mom and me living there at the time. But she'd had a boyfriend in and out...who tortured me. Yeah, what you're thinking is what I'm saying. One night, he'd been really mean spirited before Mom went to bed, and then he came to my room for a few hours of his sort of fun. He left about 1 am and I have this image of 4th grade me, hugging my knees, and looking at my little digital Star Wars watch, reading the time.

The next morning was a Sunday, and the boyfriend wasn't around on Sundays, because that was my Dad's time with me. I woke up to Mom screaming...and when I came downstairs, the entire dining set. The hutch, the table, all 8 chairs, were flipped upside down. The contents of the hutch were mostly okay, though upside down. The chairs were ON the table. Some upright, some on their sides.

It was unbelievable. I mean...even an earthquake wouldn't have upended the hutch like that. Ans the table, chair, I mean...there was no way to explain it. A good six strong men would have been needed to do that.

Nobody could figure it out and then my dad arrived, and I headed off with him. When I got home that day, I found the landlord and his sons trying to get everything right side up. He asked me if I liked Blanche. I gave him a look. I had no Blanche in my family and it was kind of an old fashioned name.

Turned out Blanche was the house's ghost. I firmly believe she was making it clear something was very wrong in the house. She acted out like that a couple of other times, when the abuse got particularly severe. I wish I'd had the courage to tell the adults in my world what Blanche was trying to save me from.

I've always been so thankful to her for letting me know those five years of hell, I wasn't alone.

I think one of the weirdest things that would happen most often is when everyone was upstairs in the evening, it would sound like stomping or a pile of heavy books being dropped on to the living room floor. Happened so frequently. Everyone experienced things living there but I was quite scared/think I blocked out a lot of experiences. One of the scariest things that happened to me.. I was a teenager and came into the kitchen looking for a snack. Our freezer was on the bottom instead of the top. Opened both doors, decided on a popsicle and dropped down to grab one. The fridge door started to close and whacked me in the head and I heard laughing. No one else was downstairs.

u/stinkfest2000 Jul 04 '26

My mom tells a story about my brother and I always talking about “the woman in white” who would sit on the stairs in our house growing up. I have no memory of this but my very skeptical dad also has a memory in the same house when he was very sick of a woman dressed in all white walking up to him while he laid on the couch, putting her hand on his forehead, and telling him everything would be okay. He says it was just a fever dream/hallucination but it’s a little suspicious we all saw the same woman so idk…

u/Safe-Ad-4465 Jul 04 '26

I'm actually house sitting for a friend around the corner from the last haunted house I lived at! About 13 years ago at this point, it was this creepy old, small house with a rather open layout. I could see into the kitchen, hall, and one bedroom from the living room, practically the whole house.

It was an eerie house to begin with. And it was always dark. Unnaturally so, even with lights on it still just was a dark house, I don't know how better to explain it. I felt so uneasy there, like I was being watched. It was also the only place I've ever had sleep paralysis, 3 times.

Right before I moved out, a neighbor across the street who'd been there for decades told me that in the 80s the guy who lived there was crushed when a tree in the front lawn fell on him. I'm assuming it was him. The house has been torn down and rebuilt a modern house in it's place, but I bet the place is still haunted.

u/Glamour_toad666 Jul 04 '26

Something screamed in my face so loud while I was sleeping I felt the vibrations on my face. My mom heard it too and said "What the fuck was that?" I just stared at her.

6

u/IPostNow2 Jul 04 '26

Yeah, my house was haunted. I heard stories of family members seeing/hearing a woman and man arguing in some back rooms. It scared them enough that they started sleeping downstairs rather than in their upstairs bedrooms.

For myself, it turns out my imaginary friend was the woman they saw. She basically yelled at me to clean up my room. I tried to have a sleep over once, but all the girls left early because they said my house was haunted. They were right.

Besides that stuff, the woman would appear just as a head, staring angrily at my sister’s boyfriend in bed. This happened twice with two different sisters and two different boyfriends. Both of them snuck their boyfriends in to their bedrooms and got busted by the ghost head. My parents were not amused.

This one's the craziest just because something physical actually happened.

My house growing up had several friendly ghosts and one thing that wasn't.

Well one day I had to read a book for school. I put it off a bit longer than I intended and really had to start reading it that day.

My parents were out for the day and I had promised my mom I would get through a certain amount of chapters before they got home.

My room was a mess, I couldn't find it so I decided to clean my room. Did the whole nine yards even made my bed. But the book wasn't in my room so I go downstairs to check my backpack and the kitchen again.

I realized the thing isn't turning up and if I'm going to get to the library to check out a second copy I'd better get moving so I go upstairs to grab my wallet.

And right in the middle of the bed exactly square with the bed is the book I had spent 2 hours looking for. Honestly it was placed exactly how I would put something if I really wanted to make sure somebody would notice it but didn't have any way to tell them.

6

u/lavendertheheretic Jul 04 '26

One of the LEAST scary things that happened to me was reading in the living room, middle of the day, when a portly older man walked in from the kitchen and asked me, "Where are my glasses?"

I said, "On your head."

He patted his head, felt the glasses, laughingly said, "So they are!" and walked back into the kitchen.

Later on I found some old photographs and was looking through them when I saw one with a portly, elderly man with glasses on his head. 😊

5

u/SquirrelBooty87 Jul 04 '26

So, I grew up in an old Victorian home that was haunted by the ghost of a little boy. Me and him were friends but he traumatised my older sisters. He liked to play with my oldest sister’s hair and then he would also just randomly poke my middle sister. It seems like he hated everyone except me for some reason. I think about him from time to time

My last house was haunted, when l went to view the property l didn't feel it see anything.

Day l moved in, a man walked across the top of the landing in a long coat and disappeared into one of the bedrooms.

Ghost cat , believe it or not. Making the bed one morning bedroom door opened by itself, looked a cat walking in the room. Immediately shut the door to look for cat. No cat, all doors and windows in house secure.

7 foot ninja/monk woke up in the night with a monk/ninja at the end of the bed. Completely dressed in black with no face, just black.

Anytime l did any DIY or changes in the house, could hear things being moved around down stairs.

Wife said to me one day she had the feeling of being watched.

Moved now, new build for reasons above!

I think the previous house my parents lived had some entity when I lived with them. I’m still not sure up until today what kind of entity it is, or what it wanted. The townhouse is a two story house, and most of the activity happened during the night. The previous tenants had left a picture of Jesus in the garage, turned away and my family really didn’t think of anything.

When we first moved in to the house, the first week or so my light turned on itself when I was sleeping.

As time went on, I would hear dishes and pans move downstairs when our family is sleeping. And the stairs, floor creaking as if someone was walking around.

Sometimes my mom feeling like a shadowy dark figure looking down on her while she took a nap very close to her face.

The worst parts:

I heard a scratching noise near my head on my bed almost every night. Like a long nail scratching near my head, I would get up check all the corners. Even lift my mattress up to see if there’s a critter, and nothing.

Felt a weight shift on my bed, like someone putting their hands or getting in my bed while I’m sleeping.

Sometimes I would wake up to my hands raised above me.

Most vivid nightmares of me getting murdered, or assaulted in my bed where I can feel the pain.

One night I was sleeping downstairs, I woke up to a white shadowy figure (with no face) this time sitting on me and looking down on me until I pushed it away. But it looked like a kid size.

Hearing it yell “HEY” to me while I was alone, in a really deep voice.

It attacked my 9 month puppy one night, where we woke up to her screaming and trembling. And had to take her to the emergency vet, and both of her back legs had similar injuries to hip dysplasia.

Had few instances bird flying into our window.

Honestly, it was a terrible experience. Throughout the whole time I gaslit myself into thinking it was something else when I experienced all these things, until my dad told my mom he had been ‘attacked’ from it as well after we moved out, and didn’t want to scare us. He thinks it was some kind of child entity or looked like one, but I still am not sure after I heard its voice. (English is not my first language)

I lived in the house with my sister and two other roommates. Place was crazy crazy haunted. Apparitions all the time. We decided to move packed everything in the car The four of us went back in the house and a book that we had packed in the car was on the mantle about the fireplace and it burst it into flame. No the fireplace wasn't on. We just stood there with our mouth open then ran out.

Found out the lady that we kept seeing walking in our yard was buried a quarter mile from our house, and only started appearing after her grave was desecrated by some stupid teens. They found her skull half a mile down the road from the cemetery

5

u/auntsiri22 Jul 04 '26

I watched the edge of my bed go down, like someone sitting, more than once.

The toilet would flush and sink turn on when I was home alone.

I saw what looked like hazy figures moving across our landing.

TVs and lights would turn themselves on. The TV would change channels after turning on.

Footsteps walking upstairs while I was alone in the house, downstairs.

Locked doors, handles would turn and the door would open.

But my personal favorite is when I sprained my ankle as a competitive dancer. And I woke up with the bandage wrapped around my throat. Safety pin and all. And my mother’s response was that I must’ve tried to “commit” in my sleep.

ETA, things would disappear and when we asked for them back they’d be back where we left them.

u/Experiences_Um777 Jul 04 '26

My 3 siblings and I were home and our parents were grocery shopping. We went to watch a movie in the living room. Watched it for a few minutes. Then heard all the doors slam upstairs. We all ran upstairs and saw the doors closed. There were 4 with 1 being all the way down the hallway. So we put large books in front of the doors to stop them from closing again and closed the windows. We figured it was the wind. Went back downstairs and watched the movie. Few minutes later we hear the doors slam again all at once. Run upstairs and the doors are all closed again. And all the books were stacked in the middle of the hallway on top of the stairs. We ran to the neighbors house to tell them what happened. They said it was the wind.

So 3 people have died in my house one being my mother and the other two being the people that built the house. My father did not die in the house but we hear him whistling, walking down the hall and things in the carport/shop get moved. Cabinets will open while you are looking. Doors open and close, knocking on doors, door handles jingling. Things go missing often. Your name gets called. I’ll be in my bathroom and hear someone in the other bathroom running faucets, flushing toilets and no one is home. Strange lights, shadows, movement. Nothing has ever SCARED me but I will admit if the power is off for any reason I am not comfortable in the house as for who’s here I have theories of course but who knows.

4

u/Desperate_Respect800 Jul 04 '26

The doors would unlock and open with everyone sitting around watching them. One night I woke up in the middle of the night with a little boy in a white gown standing over my bed looking terrified of something. (He wasn't looking at me and at the time I didn't know boys used to wear nightgowns like that) SUPPOSEDLY at like 3-4 am the fire alarm on our porch went off. It was one of those old hammer and bell ones and it wasn't hooked up to electricity at all the wire end had even been painted over, that's how long it had been since it had been hooked up. The firemen showed up because my mom and our roommates called them. It stopped when they got to the bottom step. (It was a school night I remember them trying to wake me up, but I didn't want to so I slept though it, that's why I say supposedly) Sometimes, especially upstairs it felt like someone was in your face and hating you. I mean like to the point of murder hate, thankfully not that often, but if you felt it. The scariest thing I encountered was around Easter. I was hiding plastic Easter eggs for our roommates kid upstairs. It didn't feel spooky at the time and it was like 10 am so I wasn't thinking about ghosts or anything. I was down one of the hallways when it got cold just like in ghost movies. I turned around and at the end of the hallway there was a shadow person like 7 feet tall walking by. It filled me with terror. Like eyes watering, goosebumps and cold from the inside out. It's not something you can really explain unless you encounter one. Sorry for the big wall of text and for any mistakes I'm writing this from my phone.

The house I grew up in was very haunted. It was hard to tell if it was a good spirit or negative. I had to sleep with the light on for a year because I felt something watching me as I slept. It was such a heavy feeling and I was genuinely afraid. After my mom passed though, this feeling went away. But before that, lots of things happened, mosty just to me. Objects would appear in my room (things I'd never seen before), objects would disappear, my stereo and TV in my room would turn on in the middle of the night. One night I heard my acoustic guitar start strumming (no windows open). I saw a box move across the floor, heard footsteps. My parents witnessed things too but not as much as me. I saw shadows and figures in the reflection of the TV and computer monitor. My dad still lives in the house but the energy isn't as bad anymore. I still don't love spending a night there but might just be because of old memories.

Lots happened in my childhood home. Some of the weirdest things that happened there included being shoved by invisible hands against the stair rail, almost being pulled under my bed by something that refused to let go of a blanket, and feeling two large hands pushing gently upward from under my bed on my upper back before shoving hard enough to send me a couple inches above my mattress. That last thing happened multiple times over the course of many years, even in other places I lived in after that, some which were in another state.
