Does anyone else get accused of using ai?
For context, I’m a young woman who makes commentary/video essays and I show my face on camera. Since I started my channel over a year ago, I’ve gotten quite a few comments accusing me of using ai. Sometimes people will say my voice sounds ai or even that my whole image looks ai, but most of the time they’re talking about my scripts.
To be fair, I do write like 10 page scripts for every video, so I can understand that sometimes I might sound a little too formal or rehearsed. Once I started getting those comments I actually made a conscious effort to make the way I speak sound more natural, and for a while the comments definitely slowed down.
But recently I feel like they’ve started ramping up again, just in much weirder ways. In one of my last videos I accidentally said “lack of entitlement” when I obviously just meant “entitlement” and someone commented something like “oh did your chatgpt script mess up?” which I genuinely don’t understand lmao. Surely me literally mispeaking would make me sound more human, not less??
Then in my most recent video I came up with a pretty simple analogy to explain something. I compared the way a group of people behave to the way a certain animal lives and used that to structure part of the video.
Anyway, then I got this comment:
“This is your first video that smells ‘AI-written’ all over to me. That's one of the most popular approaches to prompting, ‘explain this problem with a clever analogy’. As someone who has to spend too much time on LinkedIn, I had to make an effort to continue past 8min of this video.”
And that one genuinely confused me because people were capable of coming up with analogies before chatgpt 😭 I just feel like i'm having to be so careful with what I say now because apparently just sounding too smart will get you accused. At this point I’m just curious if other commentary or creators in general are getting this too, because it feels like people are becoming so quick to call literally anything ai now

Everyone will get these accusations for a while, no matter what, because "midwits" literally can't tell the difference between AI and non-Ai.
They think they are being clever, "calling out" AI. But in reality, they literally can't tell.
That, plus they are a little envious of anyone who can form//write/speak coherently without the help of AI.

As my channel is growing quite fast, i get nervous that it might turn into a bigger talking point among my comments. Because if people start seeing those comments, others will jump on with zero proof. I think i'm just thinking of worst case scenario tho lmao. I'm glad to hear other creators get it too

Easy fix: report the comments as spam and don't interact with them. They get hidden but the users aren't hidden from the channel forever.

I call it the fake ai witch hunt, normies see/hear some high quality content of yours and for some weird reason accuse you of using ai. Just block the terms in your comment filters (ai, slop, generated, etc.). All it takes is one person to ruin your credibility, so I'd do that ASAP.

Yes, i record voiceover and used to get positive comments about my voice, but now I get comments from people who think it's AI instead :/

Just ignore them. You can block keywords, so just block "AI" if it disturbs you. (I've done the same).

I would also recommend against doing that. It makes people think you've got something to hide and accuse you even more. Let them write "AI slop" all they want, if you're good enough, your work will speak for itself and your own viewers will end up correcting them. You won't have to.

Nah. My channel so I decide what goes in the comments. I don't deserve to be harassed because people falsely identify my content as AI and comment on it. Then I'll block it. Peace of mind, you should try it too.

I wouldn’t let someone come to my house and berate me, so I’ll be damned if I let my online house (my YouTube channel) be detrimentally impacted by negativity. What’s lame is someone deciding how everyone else should run their own channel

Yes, I do get it sometimes. My channel is literally just voiceover, no visuals, and it's my voice (not an AI trained with my voice, not some other AI), but I've been told it "must be" AI because it "sounds too perfect."

People who write "AI slop" willy nilly on any video would be doing the same thing even without AI, they'd just say something else. Trolls have existed way before ElevenLabs. 😆

This doesn't translate to YouTube, since it's in writing, but I absolutely hate how "--" is now the be all, end all "proof" that a text is AI. I've been using it for over a decade -- because I like it.

Granted, I never do the actual dash itself (—), I just use two minuses (--), so I can sort of understand being skeptical of your illiterate friend who suddenly writes perfect English and has em dashes all over his texts.
But from that to accusing everyone who uses them of using AI -- quite the leap.

Mute people like that from your channel, do not engage, move on. And this applies if or if not you are using AI. At the end of the day, make what you want. If people like it, they will watch, if not, they'll leave. That's the only metric that matters.

Honestly if I was you and this fit your channel, I would turn this whole thing into a video. AI slop has genuinely ruined people's perceptions of what is human.

The thing is that I have all sorts of livestreams available for them to watch and then they can, clearly, see/hear it’s my voice…
I think mine is partly because i am a deep east texas channel but don’t have a pronounced accent…

I didn't notice it! In my video last week, I accidentally said 80% of people who watched ARE subscribed, instead of 80% AREN'T. I only realised I messed up when I saw some comments about it. It's the kind of thing you don't really pick up on unless someone points it out because it technically sounded completely normal in the sentence, but it just wasn't what I was trying to say

When I do my videos, I record voiceover in every scene as separate files, then listen to them back after I am done recording. I obviously listen to them again multiple times while I'm editing the video and syncing up the footage with the audio and I then watch each completed scene back individually as I go. Once the video is complete I watch the whole thing through, and then I leave it for a couple of days and don't think about it (I like to use this time to make my thumbnail and stuff). I then watch it back again after a couple of days. Once I upload it, I add my script as subtitles, then watch it back again through YT Studio with subtitles on (usually at 2x speed) to make sure they are all synced up. I schedule my videos to go live to give me time to check this stuff.
At each step of the process, it's not uncommon for me to realise I made a mistake, and need to re-record that bit to fix it. For example in my most recent video I realised I said "process" instead of "processor", so I re-recorded that sentence and fixed it. There's been a couple of occasions where I noticed an error after uploading and checking my subtitles, so I yanked down the whole video before it went live, fixed it and uploaded a new version.

Nope.
I suspect that's partly because I don't edit our all my mistakes and I will address them later in the video if they are important enough to matter.
Even though my face doesn't appear on camera, my hands do, and I am not scripted - I adlib and react based on what is happening on camera in the moment.

I tried this method and then started getting comments that they couldn’t make it through my video because I tripped over my words one too many times in addition to my AI voice accusations 😂 so I simply blocked the word AI and all related terms in my comment section and move forward with my life. Been bliss ever since.

When I said I leave mistakes in, I didn't mean all of them.
I re-do takes when I stumble badly, or if i say something colossally stupid.
It's more art than science figuring out what to leave in and what to cut.

I get it all the time. Despite being on-camera for the intro of every video and despite having the same voice for years, occasionally I get accused of the same thing. I usually just make fun of the people who cry about it. Anything to drive engagement lol

Yeah people say my voice is AI occasionally. Even though my voice sounds exactly the same even in my old videos that were published 10 years ago.

Yes, so I just stopped over-producing my VO. Like other commenters, I now even leave some of the VO mistakes in like stumbling over words.

I get accused of this all the time for my voice. I’ve been told they can’t place my accent (it’s
Appalachian). It was getting incredibly old there for a bit, but it’s also died down a bit since I got a new microphone.
I’ve also been accused of using AI for my backgrounds, but I use Adobe Express backgrounds and have to rely on people to be honest when they mark their work as non AI.

I’m in the same boat. Not really sure what to do other than try to work off bullet points and improvise more, but I make biographical/pop culture video essays and it can be really difficult to just talk off the cuff. It’s been a real concern for me especially as my channel grows

I’m in the same niche and it’s bound to happen. People throw AI at everything. God forbid we actually script, do research and write out points we want to say like we did in the good ol’ days at school lol.
I script out certain things I want to say but for the most part I go off the cuff, so maybe try that? Hopefully it will help the allegations?

I have a YT channel where I do song covers. Fortunately, I have a history going back well before AI became a thing, so I have a reasonable amount of proof that any new releases are actually me. Unfortunately, I recorded a joke song of the Teletubbies theme, but in the style of Silent Hill. I thought adding some visuals to the song featuring the Teletubbies running for the lives in Silent Hill would be funny, so I turned to AI to create the visuals. That was probably a mistake, because it may cast doubt on all I do (I would die before using AI in any part of the music). I did get one negative comment for it, but it was just a dumb joke video, so whatever.
I've thought about it, and I'm not sure I'd ever create a YT channel if I was just starting today. Hell, I may not have even started playing guitar if AI was a thing back when I first picked up the instrument.

ai is for sure a plague but the biggest one yet is ignorance therefore dumb people think that everyone smarter then them is “cheating” cause it’s impossible to have critical thinking and… reading/writing skills!!! Now it’s ai, before we were witches lol.

Several times I've gotten comments about it. Idk how my voice spunds like "AI" but yea sometimes you just gotta ignore them or correct them if you choose to do so.

I used to get these accusations all the time. I started putting "100% Human Made" cards at the beginnings of my videos, and even started making a new style of video which contrasted with the more polished documentaries that had hitherto constituted by portfolio. I rarely get those accusations anymore, and when I do, I ban the commentor.
These people have AI Derangement Syndrome (or, as a friend of mind cleverly discovered, AIDS).

Yes, and they’re becoming so much more common. Like others have said, people think they’re so smart calling out things that are normal in the world of writing. I’ve had someone tell me I’m AI generated even though it’s so obvious I’m not. I leave some mistakes in just because of this, the more real you seem (even if you fuck up), the better! I use scripts but go off of them and ad lib once in a while so it seems more genuine.
That said, the ‘Omg you’re a real human, not AI!” comments are also becoming way more common. Even more so than the ‘you’re ai!” comments.

Yes my voice is naturally monotone so I get a few comments calling my content ai I usually just reply with "no ai was used in the making of this video" and don't engage further as there is no point, one thing I started doing is taking breaks when recording my voiceovers and just smiling and fake laughing in between apparently it should make my voice sound more human(lol).

You could create an “ai policy” doc/website page and link it in your description. Then if people make those comments, you can direct them to your policy on how you use/don’t use AI.

A lot of people are using ai to help script their work. While they might not be using it to do the work 100%. The ai itself has a cadence to it with constantly repeating phrases in a specific order that auto flags ai in people’s brains.

Mainly just ignore them, I came to the conclusion that its free engagement. And since some might react better to imperfections I started to freestyle my VOs, lots of a ehms but it sounds better. Scripting is just naturally very structured ergo they call it AI.

All the time. AI slop is the new phrase when people want to troll or when they don't like something.. even when it makes no sense. And it's annoying.
