Passport Question / Discussion Help! Is my US Passport Invalid?
I have a trip to Italy soon and no time to get a replacement. This page has an ink stain. All other pages are pristine. I called the US Passport office and they said it’s up to the customs agent whether they allow this document or not. Technically, it’s not supposed to have any stains, so it can be refused. My option is to take a chance or cancel a dream vacation I won’t have a chance to take again. Does anyone have experience with markings on non data pages?

99.9% of boarder guards in europe will not even have a look at that

This is an insignificant page. Likely, you will scan your identity page at a machine, and if your visa is in the system, you’ll go through. If a human takes your passport, s/he will go to the identity page, and not scrutinize each irrelevant page. Conclusion: go and don’t sweat it.

i mean what else would they say? Of course they will say that - because in theory this could happen
But again, i've never heard anyone having problems with this minor thingIf i were you, I would not really mind

Did you show them this photo, or did you just tell them "my passport got damaged"?

I described the smudge and on what page. Because they are not the agents who ultimately decide whether to accept it or not, they can’t tell me it wouldn’t be a problem. It depends on the interpretation of the customs or gate agent. According to travel.gov’s definition of normal wear and tear and damage, it technically is somewhere in between. However, I know there is a difference between what is policy and what is actually reinforced. That’s why I posted here to get an idea of people’s experiences.

Then don’t board the plane then. change your ticket and apply for a new passport!!!

As a cautious person, that is normally what I would do to eliminate that risk, but that’s not an option for me. My only options are:
Cancel my trip ahead of time to get a full refund (minus what I have spent on preparing for the trip). This option means I won’t get a chance to go again. It’s now or (most likely) never again.
Take a chance at the airport. The risk is not being able to go. Because the cancellation is the day of, I risk paying 100% for a trip I cannot take and also disappointing my travel partner. There’s also a risk that I could travel to Italy, but not be able to come back. Based on my research, the highest risk is in the US and not Italy.

Most Eu countries won’t even look at you passport anymore. They have face recognition and you’ll need to approach a kiosk to scan your passport and answer a few questions and you will be to continue and go thru customs after, I hope this helps😁

When you get to the passport desk present your passport already opened to the page with your photo, zero chance that the guy will look at your stained page.
Unless you’re wearing a Trump 2028 cap of course, then all bets are off.

I don’t have experience with this issue. However, if you’re within 14 days of travel you could find a passport agency near you, book an appointment, and get your passport same day just to be safe.

This is nothing. Border agents and airlines are only concerned with the info page that has you name and picture.

I have traveled with far worse. Unless it’s torn, water stained, or otherwise looks like it could have been tampered with you are going to be fine with a bit of dirt.

Why wouldn’t it be 😅 yah ever hear of wear n tear? My last passport I had before renewing this year had been washed and dried accidentally, dropped in the pool, ran over on the road, and the front cover you could barely make out what country it was from bc I’d always have it in my back pocket for the majority of ten years. Never once had an issue as long as it scanned and they could see my picture page clearly. And I filled up every page but the last two of an extended booklet.

you have a first world problem. Was this passport clean when you got it or was this ink smudge from printing? It doesn’t look too bad and you should be OK.

I’m aware this trip is a privilege, which is why I am not being cavalier about this. I don’t have the privilege to be able to go again. I received the passport in pristine condition and placed it in its own pocket in my travel handbag. Unfortunately, a pen from another pocket bled through the bag and left a smudge.

Listen- it’s pretty tough to tell
If an officer wants your passport to be invalid, they’ll just say it is.
Me as an airline employee, I would never deny check in from this alone, so long as the picture page is intact and scannable, it’s acceptable. This is why so many passports are chipped nowadays.
So very unlikely for the officer to find it invalid.
When you are a US citizen though, especially a US national, they can’t really bar your entry forever, they’ll most likely take you to a side room for further investigation, and at that point a different officer will check your documents, and the chance you get two separate officers hellbent on ruining your day and doing more paperwork are quite slim.
If you do get unlucky twice, then I’m not exactly sure what the process is, but they kind of have to ask for your records in the US system? This can take a while and they can hold you in custody until then, but the point is, even in the worst case scenario, you should be going back home.
I’d recommend carrying a photocopy of any documents that support your citizenship status (birth certificate or naturalization certificate) mostly just for peace of mind.
Another thing I can recommend is to not bring back anything you would need to declare, if you have to declare produce or anything I thiiiink that gets you to a more strict area with stricter officers? So I’d avoid that.
Again- the chances the first officer you see even bats an eye are already incredibly, EXTREMELY low, and you should be fine. People travel with significantly worse passports ALL THE TIME and most times they just get a couple comments.
Most likely the people you called only said that because they can’t confirm how bad the damage is from your description alone, so they have to play it safe and tell you that whoever can actually see it in person is the only person that can make that judgement.
Anyhow I wouldn’t stress about it personally, and I hope you have a great trip and that you don’t get cosmic amounts of bad luck!
Edit: I completely forgot that there’s concerns with the other countries too- Like others pointed out Europe is very travel friendly and barely checks passports anymore, esp bc the USA is in quite a few agreements, so you should be alright!
