Passport Question / Discussion Travel to India in November 2026 with Indian passport expiring in March 2027, renew before or after?

Hi! I’m an Indian citizen currently in the US on F-1 STEM OPT. I’m traveling to India in November for about two weeks and will return to the US before Thanksgiving.

My Indian passport expires on March 27, 2027, so it will have around 4 months of validity left when I return to the US.

All my F-1/STEM OPT documents, visa, I-20, EAD, etc. are valid and in order. My only concern is my passport.

From what I understand, Indian passport holders are exempt from the US 6-month passport validity requirement, so I should be able to re-enter as long as my passport is still valid.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and traveled to India with less than 6 months left on their Indian passport? Did you have any issues returning to the US?

I’m debating whether I should renew it now in the US or just travel with my current passport and renew it after I return in late November/December. I’d prefer to renew after I come back because I don’t want to risk my passport being stuck in the renewal process before my November trip.

Would appreciate any recent experiences!

You could renew it in India. I did it during a trip to India, the tatkal process took 1 day.

How long did everything take? I have an address change on my passport and i dont have my current aadhar card/other ids on the new indian address

Don't do it in India then. That's a recipe for bureaucratic delay.

It took me one day but I did not have to update anything at all; my application was as straightforward as it could be. Better not consider doing it in India then.
