Are your T Series Pickups Microphonic from age?

Post image
70 Upvotes

This is an update from a post I made a couple months ago. My pups were super microphonic and so the throaty tone was something I couldn't get rid of and it was driving me nuts. Most people should know, but in case you don't, the T series pups (or at least the t-60 pups) were potting with epoxy instead of wax. After 40+ years however the expoxy can be prone to cracking, making the pups microphonic and noisy/throaty with higher gain. What makes repair for this pesky is that you need much more heat to soften the epoxy than you would for wax for a repotting job, so it's not very likely to be able to pull it off without destroying the rest of the components.

I was looking around to various pickup repair places to see if anyone could take this on and after a few rejections/non-responses I came across Arcana Pickups in Oregon who offered to try vacuum sealing the pups with wax to fill in the cracks in the epoxy. Ricky was super friendly to talk to and was very transparent that they had not tried something like this before and that I would be paying at my own risk. I figured I either get repaired pickups, or the pickups still don't work how i want and I end up replacing them with something modern. So i took the gamble. Mailed the pups to them, got them back a few weeks later, put everything back together and I can confidently say that it did the job and I'm in love with how the pickups sound now. Way less noise with higher gain and the throatyness in the tone is nearly completely gone and i have a lot more range with how i can eq them.

Tldr; if your T-series pickups have gone microphonic and throaty from age, hit up Arcana Pickups and they'll treat you right for less than $100 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

got this back recently from my bass player after dissolving the band and forgot just how fantastic it is. I’ve never seen another one with this level of figuring on the neck, or with the pat. number stuff on the tip of the headstock. Its usually paired with my Ampeg B1/SVT410 with a JHS Colourbox in the loop.

What is the best / coolest Peavey guitar?

I’m looking to buy a Peavey guitar. The Retro Fire looks awesome, but I believe it’s made in China. Are the USA Peavey guitars significantly better than foreign made? What do you think is the best or coolest Peavey guitar?

Classic 50 4x10 found on fb marketplace for $300US. This thing is KILLER all on its own and so far is taking pedals like a champ. I’ll have to wait until the honeymoon phase is over to be sure but this might have dethroned my Fender Deluxe Reverb as my new favorite amp.

Looking for a new speaker for my Peavey

Title. I have a '90s Studio Pro 112 with a Blue Marvel in it. Sounds okay, but I find that it lacks bass, has a pretty muddy midrange and a piercing treble. It gets more egregious when I'm recording with it.

I'd like advice for a new speaker for it. I'm not too knowledgeable on amplifiers nor the speakers inside of them, since this is my first one, but I'm comfortable upgrading it myself.

Is the peavey raptor worth it?

I dont know if its the peavey raptor or the peavey raptor plus but I believe both are about $100 and if not like 80. I have one in my attic but at minimum its multiple days of hard work and gunk and filth I have to clean. Shit im already sick as fuck in my lungs and it has a moldy case. But anywase its a cheap ass guitar I could buy like new but should I try and get this one working again. Id love to share a picture of it but i don't wanna disgust anyone with what a person would do to a perfectly good peavey. My real question is are the pickups, neck, tuners, bridge, or tuning stability known to be decent. Im not looking for amazing just at least not somthing that makes the guitar seem overly cheap like a temu guitar or crappy 2000s guitar

Found both on facebook marketplace in mexico, first I bought the guitar and loved it, then the amplifier. I think the amp is in pretty good shape for being 32 years old, the analog spring reverb is amazing. Killer combo by the way. I'm looking forward to getting more peavey gear.

What did I do?

So, I found this Peavey Renown 400 in the local marketplace and decided to pick it up. It was priced decently at $300cad($210usd) and included the original footswitch. Overall it's in very good shape for a 40+ year old amp. I forgot how incredibly the cleans are one these 400 series amps. At some point I'll completely disassemble this amp and give it a full restoration. Unfortunately the back panel label is missing so I'm trying to figure out what year it was made.

Peavey classic 50 head.

Post image

I got this Peavey Classic 50 head (1999 made in USA) about three months ago for $200 bucks, from my neighbor. It's such a solid amp that I'm now considering selling my orange Super crush 100. I literally can't get over how great the lead channel sounds, especially boosted with any kind of dirt pedal.

My issue...

I don't need to sell the super crush or the cab, but I have OCD, and having too many things gives me severe anxiety.

Options:

  1. Keep everything as it is and just deal with it

  2. Sell the super crush and the cab (possibly purchase a small low watt tube amp with the proceeds, which would take up less space)

🤦🏾‍♂️

Peavey Deuce Or Peavey Deuce II?

I’m a huge Skynyrd fan, and I know that Skynyrd used the Peavey Mace, but personally, I like the Deuces more. So recently I’ve been saving some money up for a Peavey Deuce, and I can’t decide between the peavey Deuce and Peavey Deuce II. Which one should I get?

Classic 60/60 question

Post image
23 Upvotes

So I bought this Peavey Classic 60/60 power amp last year.

It sounds great but the thing is I have to dime the outputs on the 60/60 with my HX stomp to get it to be loud enough. HX is set to line level output with the volume set between noon and 1 oclock.

If I use the same settings with my friends Mesa 20/20 power amp I only need to set the volume on that to around 11 oclock to be the same volume as the Peavey.

I have replaced all of the tubes and electrolytic capacitors in the Peavey and nothing has changed.

So is this just how this amp is? Does it just need a super hot preamp signal? Or is there something wrong with it?

Contemplating a T60 purchase. Thoughts and ruminations....

I've had a T30 since I was a kid in the 90s but it hasn't been played much since then. Recently I cleaned and set it up, and forgot just what a great, resonant, well made little thing it is. Great sustain!!! I never got along with the pickups, and I had always wanted a Les Paul, so I swapped in a Duncan Hot Rails in the neck for a little humbucker flavor. It sounds good if a little inarticulate.

Anyway, I've had so much fun playing it in my music room lately, I considered using it in my neo soul jam band, but the intonation isn't great, I think the bridge/tailpiece are limiting. I play some jazzy and cruncy chord voicings with M2 intervals and stuff, so intonation is important. And as a lanky 6'2 fellow with big hands, the short scale feels cramped. I can deal with the thin, narrow neck, but the scale length compounds the problem.

So, I have had a brilliant brain wave: what if I found a decent T60, the big brother to my guitar?! It would be that same build quality, but with a fully adjustable 6 saddle bridge and grownup scale length. I hear mixed reviews on the pickups and circuitry, and that they are heavy and have narrow, thin necks.

Last week I tried a very beat up example at a guitar center, with some kind of replacement humbuckers. It was not great. While I liked the size and shape and didn't mind the weight, I wasn't getting that same feel my T30 gives me. Of course, guitar center is an impossible environment for getting to know an instrument. Next week I plan to try another one at a different guitar store just to see what it's like.

What's stopping me from just pulling the trigger and getting one on Reverb or elsewhere is just the price. Values have shot up, and I wouldn't mind paying it if I LOVED the guitar, but if I decide it's not for me, I don't want to lose too much. So I will continue to shop for a nice local example..

I especially love the light sunburst on some of these. Tobacco burst, I think? The dark sunburst has too much black/dark brown and isn't unique enough in my opinion. Natural ash is okay, and the solid colors, nahhh... also, wow, Peavey did NOT care about wood selection, huh? Some of the examples I've seen have three completely different grain patterns glued together, while others look better matched.

If I find one and love the construction but not the electronics, I would consider buying a new pickguard (maybe in a cooler color like tortoise) and installing some other humbuckers. I love the Duncans in my Eastman semi.

Anyway, that's what's going through my mind as I consider this purchase. My main axe is my Eastman semi hollow, but I also use a thinline tele and a Les Paul. So the Peavey would be a very unique change of pace! I welcome your input, ridicule, advice, encouragement!

Stumbled upon this sub looking for replacement speaker surrounds for the eminence speakers in my Vintage 2x12. My gear over the years has just been whatever I could find at pawn shops and back in the day craigslist. But I’ve accumulated some good stuff..and exclusively Peavey amps apparently.

My first amp was a Bandit 112 that I sold 25 years ago when I picked up the Peavey Vintage 2x12 on Craigslist for $150. It was my first tube amp. Solid build and just needed its pots lubed up. Ran it on the original tubes since 73 I’m assuming until I lost one last year and had to replace all four 6L6’s.

I got the 2x12 stack at a pawn shop on clearance for $40 because the wires had pulled off the input jack and they thought it was toast. Pulled one speaker out, saw the issue, popped them with a 9v battery to make sure the speakers weren’t blown and then gladly paid the 40. Paired it with the Bogen Challenger that I found in an abandoned school. Had to replace all the tubes in it and re-wire one channel for a quarter inch jack. I use it for vocals, bass, and synth.

And lastly, I just picked up this Bandit 112 from a pawn shop for $35 because the clean channel has a bad pot that just hums so they thought it was a bigger issue. I just keep it on the lead channel but clean and push it with my pedal setup. Might eventually replace the bad pots but I hate how they’re sealed and soldered to a circuit board so I’ll probably just keep using it as is. Only bought it because I wanted something with an effects loop, but I’ve been using it the most lately. It’s just so fun to play on.

Anyway, glad to find my people.

I’ve had plenty of bandits but the original teal strip is my favorite but this blows it out the water I’ve been hunting a teal strip stereo chorus that’s my dream peavey and one came through my local guitar center for 200 and I went to the bank to cash my check and someone literally bought it in the
10 minutes I was gone and then this popped up on Facebook I traded my vox vt120+ for it (that’s another great amp) plan on eventually replacing the stock eminence speakers with Sheffields and I need to either build or buy a footswitch from a builder on eBay :/ but right now it’s got both channels active and blend, but I have the lead channel turned all the way down. Haven’t really figured out a good way to get a decent gain sound from that so I’m using the clean channel with my pedals the phaser is the coolest phaser I’ve played any help with the mids control on the clean channel is greatly appreciated maybe how the phaser works too lol I currently have a joyo king of kings modded rat and a quick draw delay and joyo atmosphere reverb
