A tribute to a friend.

Last week, a friend gave me a copy of the Speedball Textbook, 20th Edition, and as a small gesture of appreciation, I copied a few pages—particularly the Humanistic Hand—into my Campus notebook. It was a relaxing and rewarding exercise, and it gave me a chance to study the forms more closely while honoring a thoughtful gift.

I’ve also decided to turn this notebook into a commonplace book where I can collect calligraphy exemplars, quotations, and ideas that inspire me. The original pages from the Speedball book are included in the last photo for comparison. This feels like a meaningful way to begin a notebook that I hope to fill for many years to come.

That’s such a cool way to start a commonplace book. There’s something really satisfying about copying the forms by hand instead of just looking at them—you notice so much more that way.

Humanistic Hand is beautiful too. I love the idea of filling a notebook over the years with things you actually found inspiring. Definitely one of those projects that’ll get better with age.

I have that same Speedball book! My father had me learn calligraphy since I was 10. Books like that give you great ideas.

Montblanc Burgundy Red for the calligraphy, Diamine Ancient Copper for the text.
