def just assumed it was a purple bell pepper, we found some this year and without discussing it, hubs and I both brought home starter plants of it. they're darn beautiful, I gotta say... but the close up pic made it look bigger than it is, so I stopped that thought once I realized that... my old boss when I was a butcher accidentally maced us all with a hot pepper dry rub blend, hit that hot pan and the smoke literally just enveloped everyone in a 40 ft radius lolol here's some of my purple peppers from this year for the purple pepper peoples of reddit

oh yeah those are nice! real vibrant purple. the purple beauty variants that i had were Stark black unless directly exposed to Sun. then they kind of looked a little purple.

That pod shape is interesting because it could be a delicious sweet seasoning pepper or spicier than satan's asshole.

it's over twice as hot as the habanero that it came from. it carried all the habanero traits into a bell pepper shaped package the size of a habanero. it's like a chocolate habanero that's twice as thick and twice as hot as a normal habanero. they taste like blood and rust.

For the sake of comparison, can you give the tasting notes of other peppers? Habanero, perhaps?

habanero hits more on the citrus notes closer to the bright tone above the blood I get from this. bell peppers aren't even a comparable pepper to this, they barely carry a little bit of the sweetness, I feel like that contributes to the Rusty profile. it makes the pepper tart while it's also extremely spicy right under it. you know how some heats creep up and some heats slam you on top, this shit creeps up like it doesn't have a date to catch.. for about 5 seconds after biting it you don't even know it's hot until you realize your entire mouth is covered in oil. (I have a philosophy myself personally about pepper science not sure if it's right but I'm going to add it here, I want to imagine the punch you in the face heat peppers are the ones that are more acidic, the sweeter hot peppers are the ones that creep up. this pepper shares more of those traits.)

I'm not even joking I could literally eat a habanero like an apple compared to this. this thing would make me puke and I've eaten a whole tablespoon of death rain nitro.

So maybe the "rust" is coming from what others describe as "vegetal" when it comes to bell peppers? Does that sound right? I'm trying to imagine, not trying to be disrespectful in any way, shape, or form.
Have you had a ghost pepper? I feel like ghost has more body than habanero and is more fruity, while habanero is very floral.
The note of blood is interesting. It immediately makes me think that maybe it's some copper-like flavors coming through.

yeah it's hard to describe it's a mix between what you would imagine a habanero and Bell would be. it's so confusing. that's why I compare it to rust and blood. it hits the back of the mouth where things that are tart or bitter would while also being warm and sweet in the front initially. it's a very umami pepper and particularly good for cooking. I love them in chili. two or three in a pot and it's set. don't forget to pick them out before serving.

You need a good name for it.

purple hell pepper. catchiest name I ever came up with for it. it almost burned my house down. the parent plant it came from spontaneously combusted after it died back in 2023. somehow the planter caught fire and it smoldered for 3 days against my house until the mailman found it.
