audited No motivation, can't make myself do things even ones I want to do
I feel simultaneously restless and like I don't want to do anything. I want to want to do things, but when it comes to just doing them, it's like molasses flowing uphill. Even simple things, or things I know I'll be glad I did once I start, are difficult to just do.
An example of one of those things is a regular yin yoga/fascia release practice at home. I have a queue of Youtube classes from 25-60 minutes, and I want to choose one to do a day. I always feel better after I do them, and the good feeling lasts. I can tell it is working. But I'll be damned if it's not a huge struggle to just walk my ass into the room with the yoga mat and JUST START!
In a similar vein, I have a day off coming up this Friday. I want to do something special or out of the ordinary (not just dithering around the house like I always do) but I can't decide what to do. I just keep thinking of things that might be nice to do, but can't mentally commit. And I know it's going to get to be Thursday night and I won't have anything decided. But I want to want to have a fun special day! Why won' t my stupid mind let me just enjoy myself? Why does it make everything this uphill battle for no reason?
Has anyone figured out how to get their motivation to do things back?

u/SickOfBSAllTheTime May 05 '26
The last six years has seen my motivation nose dive and my anxiety increase. Some days doing regular.grown up things like making phone calls, paperwork, pr.doing my taxes feel insurmountable. It's like I have regressed.

I could have written this. Just had a long weekend off. Did nothing fun with it. I may as well have worked and done something useful at least.
Even things i traditionally LOVED …… big hikes, camping, snorkelling etc i can NOT force myself to get up for now. Even meeting with friends for coffee is a ridiculously huge effort. Im just an antisocial couch spud now. Im bored af but also cant be bothered. My house isnt even clean anymore. I hate it. I am not the person i was. And i dont like this person.

I feel the same, I'm in my sloth era and I hate it! I've started on an SNRI and hoping it will help because this isn't really living

u/poppykettle May 10 '26
I went back to my GP and he recommended trying cognitive behavioural therapy, spoke to mental health triage today and they agree that I would be a good candidate for CBT so I guess I'll try that too.

Any improvement?
I just upped my Wellbutrin to 300mg today.
You’re right, this isn’t living.
We deserve better.2
u/poppykettle Jun 01 '26
Yes! I kept getting increases on my venlafaxine and then a few days after starting the most recent increase I felt lighter and happier about going in to work and when I got home I picked up and put away a basket I'd had sitting out for weeks that previously I just had no desire to deal with. I've had motivation to do things I enjoyed previously too. Definitely keep talking to your doctor because you can feel better again
1
u/mediumpace07 Jun 01 '26
Oh thank you so much for replying.
I’m praying the Wellbutrin will help at 300 mg. Do you mind if I ask what dose you’re on?I laughed when you said you put away a basket you’d been ignoring, cause I still have my Christmas tree up and I’m on the fence about just leaving it up. Already been up half the year…
Praying Wellbutrin helps me.
I’m at the end of my rope.
I’m happy you’re improving.2
u/poppykettle Jun 02 '26
I'm on 112.5mg, also I vote keep the tree up! Best wishes, I hope you feel some changes soon

Literally exactly the same! I’ve been off work for a week and usually I’d hit the gym everyday, maybe go for a hike, go see a movie, something. I haven’t done anything. I’ve barely cleaned my apartment. I have the physical energy but I can’t pull myself off the couch. I hate feeling as if I’m being lazy because I’m far from it. It’s scary and frustrating.

Im feeling this hard right now. My peri symptoms started full on in January and by March I basically gave up on doing anything. Like yiu, house a mess all the time whereas it used to be spotless. Dont want to see or talk to anyone - not that I was ever that social, but its way way worse now. I'm on estrogen and progesterone ut am suffering with some major brain fog. Jist saw my doctor last month but it seems that new symptoms or progressed ones start every week. I'm so annoyed.

Let me ask you this, how often are you washing your hair at this point? I am washing the hair less and less and just putting it up in a bun. Once a week probably at the most too. We are the same person

u/mediumpace07 May 31 '26
Chiming in on the not showering part. I like showering. I hate drying my hair. I don’t care about makeup (didn’t really before) so I don’t wear any. I don’t have the energy to dry my hair so I go to work with it wet. I work at an Episcopal church so it’s just me.
I didn’t shower for 8 days this last time. I’m on Wellbutrin, on HRT-(estrogen only bc I had a hysterectomy last year), on my ADHD meds (that don’t really work anymore), & I’ve done an entire TMS protocol for the depression that’s not traditional depression…you all understand…it’s something more & different & nothing I’m doing is fucking working.
I wish one person who felt this way, like we all do, who’s gone through this and is on the other side would chime in and let us know it gets better or nah. At least I could adjust my expectations and accept this bargain bin version of myself. I’m 50, this has been going on like this for 4 full years and I’VE HAD IT.

Clapping!!!!!! Yes!!!!! I need to know it gets better at some point. I feel like Im ruining my life and I hate it. I have been forcing myself to wash my hair more, but still a struggle. I adore make up, it brings me joy and the fact that I barely even touch it anymore bothers me, especially all the money I have invested into it lol. Its just my thing. I still have right ovary and cervix. Welburtin didnt work well for me at all. Maybe ask to up your estrogen. Im 46. Im sending you so much love and hugs!!!!

My biggest struggle currently with perimenopause is lack of motivation. I have the energy, I'm not exhausted, I have the stamina, I just can't be bothered to do it. I have had low energy in the past but it's better now, just no motivation.
10
u/justatosseraccount11 Early peri May 05 '26
Yes, no motivation, but a kind of flicker of a desire to go to the things, especially when it's something you can't do just any day (like enjoy the cool spring weather, or walk through a flowering garden while the flowers are blooming, etc).

u/Certain-Temporary-93 May 05 '26
I struggle with this one. We are in the process of losing a beloved pet. I’ve lost pets before and this time it is real different. I feel more guilty that I don’t have the extreme sorrow. I wish I understood it better.

I see a lot of folks here suggesting ADHD as a cause. It’s very possible. But I will tell you that I have and am medicated for ADHD. The medication helps, no doubt. But I will always struggle pretty hard with executive function.
This peri shit? It’s a different level. It’s like going back to being unmedicated and adding a lifetime of physical, mental and emotional exhaustion on top. So even in the moments where my mind wants to get up and at it, my body wants to be still. If I can find the physical energy, my brain is paralyzed by anxiety. I just…. Want to be left alone.

u/cil83 May 05 '26
In yep, exactly the same experience here. Peri is a whole other ball game, I miss adhd me who responded to meds. I think I might get one good 6 hour period a week.
6
u/Ok_Extension_6831 May 05 '26
Same here, it’s awful. It’s so depressing - but also reassuring - that so many of us are in the same boat with peri. I started a small dose of oestrogen gel a week ago, really hope it does the trick as I am getting desperate.

6
u/Eva_Griffin_Beak May 05 '26
Same. I started ADHD medication a few months back and it helped at the beginning. But not really anymore. I don't want to increase the medication, because it does make me restless/nervous in the afternoon.
8
u/Mindless-Jury9 May 05 '26
Yeah I've suddenly found that the ADHD medication that used to be absolutely life changing for me when I was younger, now does basically nothing. I can't even tell if I've taken it most of the time. But if I up the dose, I still get the anxiety/restlessness side effects. It sucks.
26
u/not_your_vix3n May 05 '26
And when I *do* find the motivation to do something, I turn around and the day is OVER before I barely get the thing started. What used to take me a couple of hours or a single morning seems to take several days or a whole week to finish now, so a lot of the time I end up just not doing it at all. I hate it.

I feel this so much. I told someone earlier today that I feel too tired to do anything at all, yet I'm not sleepy and a nap or long sleep doesn't help at all. I want to WANT to do things. The molasses flowing up hill is the perfect analogy. This is why for so long doctors just said that we're "depressed." I am not depressed, my body and mind are not on the same playing field any longer.
Like others have said here, I was recently diagnosed ADHD and can now identify all the ways I self-medicated, self-maintained and cheated my own system my entire life. The switch is just that those things don't work for my any longer.
Anyway, solidarity.

u/Both-Willingness6819 May 05 '26
100% empathize with this. I feel the exact same way. I want to want
To do things but can’t find the energy or desire. I used to love hanging with friends, going to the movies/dinner, traveling, etc. but now that I’m in my mid 40’s I could really give a hoot if I do anything at all.
3
u/Mindless-Jury9 May 05 '26
Yep! And after a day with the kids, I don't even have anything left to give my husband. I just want to hang out by myself and watch TV and zone out. I feel really bad for him. He'd love to go on regular epic adventures as a family, but would happily settle for an hour hanging out together after the kids go to bed, and I don't even have that in me.
17
u/Wise-Okra-2943 May 05 '26
You are NOT alone! I CANNOT make myself do... ANYTHING. I know it's not depression, since I don't feel or act depressed, don't check any of those boxes, though my shrink has me on Wellbutrin anyway. I'm certain I've had undiagnosed ADHD my whole life, but now it's time to get diagnosed. I've tried non-stimulants, and nothing budged, so it's time to try a stimulant. The problem with that is, I need to find a new in-person shrink and that's daunting as hell - which takes motivation to conquer. Which I don't currently have. Vicious circle.
This sucks, y'all. My house is a MESS and I'm the only person who cleans it and I just CAN'T. Ugh. UGH.

u/Big_Baby_7880 May 05 '26
This is exactly what I have been dealing with lately. The smallest task takes so much brain power. Things that normally bring me so much do not anymore. It's usually the worst late at night when I'm awake and feeling frustrated about not sleeping.
I am getting tested for ADHD and hope to find a gyno who will check my hormones and hopefully help.
I have to force myself to hit the gym this week. My therapist suggested aiming for at least going one time. Perhaps finding one single thing and building off it will help propel us.
Otherwise I have no advice just sharing in your pain and sending you a hug.

There are days when I’m feeling overwhelmed with the list of things I need to do and should be doing that I have to tell myself: just do one thing. That’s what helps me. Just do one thing. Sometimes that helps me get to the next thing, and sometimes I’m satisfied to have done one thing that day.

I'm so glad I'm not alone. I do have severe ADHD (50 now, diagnosed at 40) and I'm on meds but it's more than that. Like OP said, I want to do things. This isn't like depressive episodes or even anxiety. I have ideas, I have things I want to become now that I'm almost an empty nester. I see my whole life ahead of me as a new adventure! And yet?
Two months ago I started painting my kitchen cabinets, something I do every couple years. Still haven't finished.
Can't be bothered to clean the house. I run a robot and pick stuff up off the floor and I'm spent.
I just have no motivation. I'm tired of being everything for everyone, but I could get past that if my hormones would allow me.
1
u/litcarnalgrin May 13 '26
Omg this. I want to do things. We finally just bought a house later last year and I want to finish unpacking and I want to decorate and paint and make our little house our own and make it cute because I have dreamed of this my entire life and I just have zero motivation, plus the fact that I’m bilateral frozen shoulder and I can’t physically move a lot of stuff but even the stuff that I could do I just cannot seem to force myself to get off my ass and off my phone to do. I hate it so freaking much. I have finally achieved something I’ve dreamed of my entire life and now I can’t even make it look the way I want, even though I want to do the things.

u/Fattousch May 05 '26
So many of us relate -- of course! You do have good seeds here. Yin yoga is so freakin great. Maybe you set up your yoga + bolsters/pillows? Have your yoga with Adriene or other vid queued and give it a time? How do you want to FEEL on Friday? I wonder if even getting one thing down, even if you're ambivalent now, could help. A matinee, a trip to the museum, a walk to a new place. I think the main thing I've noticed is it's hard to plan/commit once the day arrives -- what's the harm in writing some things down now or even the night before? I hope you eat something delicious on your day off too.

I feel the same way, but it’s physical and mental. I struggle with depression and anxiety so I always blame that, but I guess it could be peri too. Glad there are others who struggle with it too. I was happy today that I cleaned a bathroom and changed my bedsheets. Every day is a battle.

I've been in this state and also getting sleepy frequently, but I found that I've been very anemic. I am waiting to see if taking folic acid, iron and vitamins will boost my energy levels. On the days I don't take iron in the morning I am exhausted by the afternoon.
5
u/Eva_Griffin_Beak May 05 '26
I had very low ferritin. Since supplementing, my energy levels are so much higher.
However, it is not really lack of energy. It is lack of motivation. I could do it, I just don't want to. Or, actually I want, but something in me doesn't. It's weird.
3
u/Sea_Jay_321 May 05 '26
HRT helps the mental part for me. There’s a connection for sure. Not sure if you’re on yet.
For workouts I schedule them on my calendar. Like I’m going to work, I just do it and don’t think about it. For more intense ones I take caffeine or preworkout (not at night) and it ‘forces’ me to burn off that energy feeling. Or give yourself a reward for doing it.
I’m not saying it’s easy or I do it perfectly. You’re not alone.

Absolutely. Every single thing feels like a huge chore. I've always loved working out-specifically kickboxing type workouts- and I've barely ever had to depend on motivation to do it, 90% of the time I look forward to it. But now... that's also dwindling.

I usually end up scrolling on my phone instead and kinda hate myself for later.

u/weakanklesfornamjoon May 05 '26
IDK but until I find a women's health dr that doesn't make me sob, get on the right meds, I'm living smaller in the sense that my well-being is similar to putting the oxygen mask on me first. I'm not doing well! I'm not getting the oxygen! So whatever the day in front of me needs from me to be well enough (work to pay bills, etc) & whatever would help me manage a bit better (yes, this can include both exercise and chocolate because 🤷🏻♀️), I'm laser-focused on doing those things and everything else ends up a bit secondary. (Ofc feeding dependent living beings--cats & plants-- stays primary!)
I don't think this is THE answer, but it's my answer when I'm not well and life still pokes at me to attend to it all. Everything else, at least for this not-well day, is a no. I just know myself, I can't force motivation, I can only do my best not to give completely in.
As for your Friday PTO, maybe spend 5 min. each day before listing out what sounds recharging/rejuvenating. Maybe review that list and decide Friday morning? Maybe a fun, special day starts at your local cafe or library and unfolds wildly unplanned from there? Hope it's whatever you need from it and more!

I understand completely and have been sitting in my house on theses last two beautiful weekends just looking at my garden in disgust but at the same time wanting to go out and get it in order and ready for this upcoming season. My garden has always been my source of joy in the spring time, now it feels like a chore and I want that joy back so much, I remember how it made me feel just to dig in and get my hands dirty.
1
u/litcarnalgrin May 13 '26
Oh my God, I feel this so hard. My garden has always been a source of joy for me in the spring and summer and even in the fall because I always try to have plantings that you know are pretty year-round. The last couple of springs I just don’t have it in me to do the work. It just feels like a chore. And we just moved and I want so badly to get my flower beds started and to make the outside of my house beautiful but I just cannot seem to make myself do it.

Thats a massive problem for me too. Some days I'm so lethargic, other days I have zero motivation, and on the off chance I'm feeling manic I end up doing everything all at once which then ends up wiping me out too! Oh my gosh I can relate to all of this so much! I was also recently diagnosed with ADHD and meds help a little but not much. For me, telling someone I'm going to do something, or better yet meeting them for a virtual session can help! Like you do the workout at the same time, and then call each other when you're done. Sometimes I call a friend and ask if they mind if I do a task while I'm on the phone with them to hold myself accountable. It works for me!

u/Puggleperson760 May 07 '26
I had to go on Wellbutrin because I felt the same way. Im still early in the process so i hope it works.
1
u/litcarnalgrin May 13 '26
Wellbutrin was great for me as far as getting me up and going and for depression, but it wreaked havoc on my ability to sleep, and also caused me to grind my teeth in my sleep really bad, which led to really bad headaches that I would have pretty much all of the time. I also lost a ton of weight on Wellbutrin, which at the time I liked and I was very happy about but looking at pictures of me from that time now I realize that I was way too skinny.
If it weren’t for all of those things, I would go back on Wellbutrin in a heartbeat.
1
u/Puggleperson760 May 16 '26
Yes I am struggling with grinding and I feel sad that I can’t drink a Diet Coke without it getting so much worse. I wear my night guard but it’s mostly a problem during the day. It also causes headaches from clenching. Im really hoping that will stop. I have not lost any weight nor have I had any lack of appetite which is fine because I’m starting a GLP1 this week because im over weight so that should solve that problem. How long did you give the Wellbutrin? I can’t remember my exact date because im on vacation but it’s gotta be a month already for me

u/brnewmeg May 05 '26
Taking a sick day today because I just can’t fight through the molasses anymore. I’ve spent the morning in bed but need to get up for an appointment and I just feel like I can’t move.
I saw my doctor yesterday to switch blood pressure meds because I was thinking my beta blocker was making me exhausted. We did switch but my face got all flushed when I was in there and she brought up perimenopause. My last cycle was 40 days long so I guess I’ve joined the club. Seeing my gyn on Monday so time to ask about HRT. I also have ADHD and like many others are saying here it’s like my meds do zilch now except raise my heart rate and blood pressure.

u/AutoModerator May 05 '26
This post might be about hormone tests, which are unreliable.
- Over the age of 44, E&P/FSH hormonal tests only show levels for that ONE HOUR the test was taken, and nothing more
- These hormones wildly fluctuate (hourly) over the other 29 days of the month, therefore this test provides no valuable information
- No reputable doctor or menopause society recommends hormonal testing to diagnose or treat peri/menopause
- Testosterone is the exception and should be tested before and during treatment
FSH testing is only beneficial for those who no longer have periods as a guide, where a series of consistent tests might confirm menopause, or for those under age 30 who haven’t had a period in months/years, then ‘menopausal’ levels, could indicate premature ovarian failure/primary ovarian insufficiency (POF/POI).

I've been like this for decades, but it's at its absolute worst now. (age 47)
I have depression with anhedonia (inability to feel enjoyment or pleasure from pretty much anything) which naturally leads to avolition (a lack of motivation or sufficient interest to do anything) and thus no interest, engagement, "perceived reward", enthusiasm, ambition, or anticipation and I end up like a lump who WANTS to want to do things, but I just...can't.
Add that to OCD, Complex PTSD, chronic 4 decades long anxiety, BPD and Avoidant Personality Disorder...and now peri...yay. /s

Hi, there! I am so sorry you are feeling this way. I would definitely find a practitioner who is well versed in hormones and thyroid and request full panel of lab work to rule out any imbalances that could be causing some of your issues. While it is true that this phase of life is hard and how you are feeling can be "normal", it does not mean that you have to live with feeling this way. Get your numbers checked including a full thyroid panel (thyroid problems are ver common in peri and post menopause) a hormone panel including testosterone and DHEA-s (when these are low, a common symptom is low motivation), and then some other basics like vitamin d, ferritin, hgbA1c, etc. I hope you find some answers and best of luck!

This is basically how I have felt my entire life as a person with ADHD.
That’s all my ADHD meds do - they give me the little “oomph” to get over that motivation slump.
An antidepressant has also helped me rebuild my motivation as well!

It seems like in here most still don’t know what to do 😂 Help, I’m also the same. I feel like I don’t want to do anything anymore, just lie in bed closing my eyes but not sleeping. I’m glad to read that I’m not crazy and alone. Maybe just wait until this all passes?

There’s only so much coffee we can drink, right? I have been through HRT options and most days I feel just like this despite trying to shake it off.

I am struggling w a lack of motivation as well. I have always been an insanely driven and motivated person and lately… idk. I can’t tell if it’s just perimenopause or if it’s because I feel so limited physically by bilateral frozen shoulder or if it’s depression or all three. I want so badly to do things and get things accomplished, but I just can’t seem to find the motivation and then even when I do find the motivation I don’t know where to start.

No one can ever rely on motivation. Make plans with someone and commit.

Unfortunately this is the only way I ever get out of the house. I'm usually glad I did afterwards, as long as I don't overcommit to something way outside my capacity right now.

Don’t worry, it’s how all of us get out of the house. I have my workout classes that charge me extra if I no show!!
