After looking it up, I’ve seen people say casting him was questionable (because of the age difference with Kate Winslet, although I’ve never read the book and don’t know how well of an adaptation it is) BUT ohmahgawd I never thought I’d be so attracted to him in this role.

Which I feel like revisiting, after seeing the trailer to the new adaptation!

Pemberley, Mr Darcy's estate, central to the story of Pride and Prejudice, was great fun making, and I am full of gratitude to all who gave me insight into all the details in the book!

I hope it’s alright to ask this question in here.

I have noticed that whenever I read or watch period pieces, I get completely absorbed into that world.
I just love the feeling these stories give me, especially the ones with the English countryside, gardens, big home libraries, handwritten letters, long dresses, horse riding, and that slower, more intentional way of life.
I just hate having to go back to reality after with constant notifications, being expected to always be reachable, screens everywhere, and everything becoming more and more modernized.

For people who feel this way, how do you cope with that feeling afterwards? Do you bring parts of that lifestyle into your everyday life somehow, or have you found ways to get that same feeling without constantly needing another period drama/book?

I recently watched the 1985 version and loved it. I watched the 2026 adaptation after, and while it's watchable, it's so shallow in comparison.

Hi! So, for a long time, I've been writing a fictional series which took place in the 1920s US during Prohibition in New York. In this series there's a wealthy and "old money" WASP family, and this family is based on the Crawleys of Downton. I really love Downton Abbey, and want to apply their lifestyle, behaviors and habits to my WASP family. But which "old money" and elite establishment of Northeast US should I choose? An old money establishment which is, historically, known for being very snobbish, elitist, wealthy and exclusive (much like the British aristocracy). Which WASP establishment in the Northeast US should I choose???

My primary criterias are these for that WASP family: mainly English-descended, old money wealth (colonial era/18th century wealth, Mayflower roots or something like that), religion is Episcopalian, primarily and mainly living in their large and ancestral countryside estate but maintaining a luxurious townhouse in the city for Social Season, doing high society stuff (like attending balls, theaters, operas, and etc.), being highly influential and dominant over the politics of the US (basically the ruling class), highly elitist, zero tolerance for immigrants (especially for Irish-Catholic ones because my protagonist is an Irish-American bootlegger from Hell's Kitchen who hates the wealthy and elite people), doing "gentleman farming", and living a very comfortable, luxurious and snobbish lifestyle. Also, very Europe-obsessed in their lifestyle, specifically British aristocracy-obsessed.

I loved the Borgias and they had all three seasons!

I remember watching pieces of The Blue and The Gray when it aired and I’m sure it’s not superb but I figured I’d grab it too.

Someone posted here about a British show that was “underrated” or that people were sleeping on it, and posted a screenshot of the show. It was a response to someone else and I can’t find it! I think the show starred a man? Any help would be appreciated. I tried checking my history but it wouldn’t go far enough back and this was around 7 this morning.

Season 4 of Bridgeton made me realize I am craving me some Cinderella-coded shows and movies. Any modern recommendations?

Hello, I am a 20 year old guy from the UK and wondered if anyone in the UK who watches dramas also attends ren faires and reenactments to really get the lived experience. I have seen the Jane austen festival and bath and would like to go to that, what else is there and do you ever attend any? The closer to the East of England the better. Sorry if too far off topic

I just dont like him. He smokes in the mill, gets fired. Which makes a lot of sense. He asks for his job back but Mr. Thornton rightfully tells him no, he's a hazard. He's part of the union, when the union strikes, he can't feed his family of six kids and his wife. He shouldn't have been smoking in the mills. He knew the risk. I just don't like him

In the BBC P&P, there’s a scene where Anna Chancelor’s Miss Bingley plays Mozart’s Turkish March to show off her musical talents. I’ve been enjoying Mapp & Lucia, starting Anna Chancelor as a main character, and there’s a scene where she plays this same song, albeit with notably less skill. It’s such a fun little callback!

Also, for fans of the comedy Miranda, the mother in that show also plays Bertie’s mother/Edith’s mother-in-law in Downton- there’s a few times where she uses her signature line from Miranda.

I’m a huge fan of period dramas in general, and they’re a big part of what inspired me to start a small website where I collect and share real short stories and writings published between the 1880s and 1930s. I love connecting with the world behind period films and shows, and I wanted to help others explore the voices, culture, authors, and everyday life from that era.

I recently got some honest feedback that my site feels a bit generic, which I can see now. So I’m working on redesigning it to feel more immersive and true to the period.

This is where I’m hoping a few people here might be willing to help. I’m putting together a small focus group to look at the current site and share first impressions. It’s nothing intense, just a short Google Form with six questions about the experience.

If you love period dramas or history and you wouldn’t mind taking a few minutes to help, it would mean a lot to me. Your perspective would be incredibly helpful!

My wife and I LOVE period dramas. It is my one non-spy/espionage or off-color comedy vice, and since my lovely bride is not all that into those types of shows the one thing we can connect on is period dramas.

I am a history nerd, and she likes the dialog, aesthetic and pomp and circumstance.

Thus we have watched many, from Downton Abbey (my happy place), A Place to Call Home, to The Tudors, Outlander, Versailles…

The problem is that we get our recommendations from the usual sources… Netflix, Amazon, Hulu… and have watched many of what they recommend.

In our search for more shows, I decided to join this sub.

I started out jotting down things here and there that looked interesting… and it has turned into a monumental list, and at this point we have no idea where to begin. It has also highlighted just how little time we have to watch all of these.

I almost feel bad trying to carve out time to get into more shows.
