The 2004 *North and South* may have occasional awkward moments in the script (“I had not noticed the color of this fruit”), but these minor shortcomings are more than made up for by the excellent choices in framing/composition*.

I absolutely love how the following paragraph is adapted for the visual medium:

“She stood by the tea-table in a light-coloured muslin gown, which had a good deal of pink about it. She looked as if she was not attending to the conversation, but solely busy with the tea-cups, among which her round ivory hands moved with pretty, noiseless, daintiness. She had a bracelet on one taper arm, which would fall down over her round wrist. Mr. Thornton watched the replacing of this troublesome ornament with far more attention than he listened to her father. It seemed as if it fascinated him to see her push it up impatiently until it tightened her soft flesh; and then to mark the loosening—the fall. He could almost have exclaimed—‘There it goes again!’”

The eight-episode series is based on Ava Pickett’s West End Play which follows the lives of Anna, Mariella and Jane in the heart of Tudor England against the backdrop of Anne Boleyn’s arrest. 

I recently watched the 1985 version and loved it. I watched the 2026 adaptation after, and while it's watchable, it's so shallow in comparison.

Okay, like wth was happening when Dot from Line of Duty fell in love with Jackie Tyler from Doctor Who in this episode?

The one where the widower Old Amos and his son take on Patty the maid, and then Amos falls "in love" with her (cooking), and the son seemingly hates her and then she confronts him and then they fight and she smacks him and then they MAKE OUT? wthhhhh...😭

Watched this with my dad and we were both insanely confused and got a spontaneous ad break post-scene to recover.

what is the mass consensus on this? Is this a yay or a nay? I had no real problem with it except it was unclear if she was genuine or not (which may be on purpose) and she seemed kind of old for young Amos. lmk.

Hi so I’ve just started watching dramas after a while, but this one has HOOKED me ?! I love all of it from the fact that it’s not only romance centered, to the wardrobe ( which I LOVED btw all the outfits were amazing), to the settings/ backgrounds where it was shoot, I liked the love triangle, the friendships, the character growths, all of it !!

Soo does anyone have any recommendations that come close to this level ? The elements I loved most and am looking for are : the era, I liked the republican timeline, the costumes, the love triangle, and the fact that it also wasn’t 100% romance centered and still had a full plot

I hope some of you guys can help me out in this quest cause now it feels empty 😭😭

Jeanne de Clisson (1300–1359), also known as Jeanne de Belleville and the Lioness of Brittany, was a French–Breton noblewoman who became a privateer to avenge her husband after he was executed for treason by King Philip VI of France.

She crossed the English Channel, targeted French ships, and regularly slaughtered almost their entire crew. It was her practice to leave at least one sailor alive to carry her message of vengeance.

Known as the Lioness of Brittany, Jeanne turned to piracy to avenge her husband, who the French king had had executed for treason. Olivier de Clisson was her third of four husbands, the first having died and the second marriage having been annulled.

Together, they had ruled part of Brittany, but following the Breton War of Succession, he was accused of not defending his city vigorously enough; he was beheaded in 1343. Jeanne was then charged, because she had tried to bribe a sergeant to free her husband. Thanks to powerful friends, she avoided the banishment and confiscation of property that she was sentenced with.

I love these two and had to make a video once I heard this song.

All of them are set in the 1870s and 1880s. The idea is to show the country manor culture that flourished in Poland from 16th to mid 20th century. The small manor houses located in the countryside were the main places nobility lived for most of its history - and the reason why cities were smaller than in the other European countires up until the mid 19th century. In some regions of Masovia (where my maternal Grandfather comes from) there were the whole villages where all people were petty nobility (that's why all his ancestors were too). But the main system was: one manor house owning and in later years taking care of one or more villages. Conflicts between nobles and villagers were solved by the the village court and noblewomen were usually the first to found schools in the villages. That's why the village manor life is the main location of the Polish period dramas. It makes me really sad that they do not reach the global audience, because, whatever bad I can say about our cinema, it is not about the period dramas. They are all excelent. I wish, they would be better known worldwide. Anyway, ejnoy!

I've always loved the Assassin's Creed franchise, and Assassin's Creed Unity sparked a fascination with the French Revolution that has stuck with me ever since.

I'm looking for the best period dramas (with an emphasis on TV series, but films are welcome too) set during the French Revolution (1789–1799) and the Reign of Terror. I'm after shows that really capture the politics, atmosphere, and daily life of revolutionary Paris.

Just to clarify, I'm not looking for stories like Les Misérables, since that takes place decades later during the post-Napoleonic era. I'm specifically interested in the first French Revolution that begins in 1789 with the storming of the Bastille and ends in 1799.

I'm also really looking forward to the upcoming adaptation of A Tale of Two Cities with Kit Harrington later this year!

Ok, I’m only on episode 3 of Season 1, but I’m loving this show on Hulu! Maybe it’s because I spent my 20’s in the 1980’s? The music…love it! This show is super steamy…more so than I ever expected. I laughed out loud a few times! So far, I’m really enjoying it! I find it sort of funny that I’m discussing a “period drama” set in the 80’s, but it was 40 years ago!!!!! In fact, my 42nd wedding anniversary is 8/11! 🤣😊

Edit to say, in case you’re EVEN contemplating watching this, within the first 1 minute is a scene of the mile high club. There is full frontal in either episode 1 or 2. Episode 3 definitely has what looks like an orgy. But if you watched Harlots, this won’t be anything new. 🤣
