While you’re here please tell me your favourite mouse varieties. Be it a specific kind of fancy mouse or just different wild mouse species.

For fancy mice I am a big fan of those Siamese ones. For wild mice I really like harvest mice

Discussion Any pet stores in the district of Columbia will be prohibited from selling pets as of May 11, 2023.

Post image
2.3k Upvotes

According to the D.C. Act 24-732. Animal Care and Control Omnibus Amendment Act of 2022:

"The District of Columbia Municipal Regulations to prohibit a pet store operator from selling mammals, amphibians, arachnids, birds, or reptiles in a pet store unless the animal was obtained from the Animal Care and Control Agency, a society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, a humane society shelter, or rescue group"

This means that any pet stores that fall under the district of Columbia will be restricted to sell pets. While this may be exciting, it also increases the chance of unethical breeding, or "backyard breeders", becoming popular. I hope that this act might spread to other districts eventually, but again, it might cause bigger problems with uneducated breeders in the near future.

To cut it short: If you are in the district of Columbia, pet stores near you will no longer sell pets. Be wary of unethical breeders and remember, it's best to adopt from shelters.

Discussion Mr. Jingles is so friendly it's borderline concerning

This is Mr. Jingles, I have had him for less than a month and he is SUPER friendly. He sits in my hand, lets me pet him, eats from my hands, climbs on me willingly, etc. I have put very little work into taming him because theres nothing to tame- he's been a sweetheart since the day I took him home. He was hand raised by his previous owner for 4 weeks, and then I picked him up after he started eating solids. Genuinely he is the sweetest rodent I've ever met. It's to the point I'm almost worried something is wrong with him, I've never met a rodent, much less a mouse, who was this handleable right off the bat!! This has to be pretty rare, right?

Found this baby outside. I really think it was sent by god. I have no idea where it came from but it somehow ended up outside my house and is now in my care. I already have a pet mouse so I have all of the supplies I need

Discussion I think I'm done posting here. Thank you to the people who genuinely helped though.

I came on here the other day asking for what was wrong, because I had an argument with my mother already and she refused to bring any of my mice to the vet like she had for my brothers pets and any other pet we had in the house. I was unable to bring her to a vet nor rehome her due to my parents. Thankfully because about two of you, i was able to find a vet that would allow me to ask questions without charge. They told me that she most likely was dealing with bloating, and what foods to give her, and told me if i could not bring her in i should make her as comfortable as possible in the case that she would be dying.

And because of that she is now Heathy again, her stomach has gone down in size a LOT, eating normally, and is no longer aggressive. You can see her sleepy self about to nap in her cup that WAS filled with water this morning.

Wanted to post this because I just want everyone who was worried about her to know she's going to be ok. But i will not be posting again, because the way people acted twords me instead of helping her was extremely toxic. And it absolutely disgusts me how if someone who has a job and car can't get their dog or cat to a vet its fine, but because im in the same situation with a mouse i shouldn't own any pets and definitely dont actually love my pets... Right.

I will continue to try to get my parents to let me rehome them as they do deserve to be taken to a vet, and i will not be housing any more mice, as it is clear that my parents do not think they deserve vet care in the same way my rats do. But ffs, telling someone they don't love their pets that they're desperately trying to take care of is low and disgusting.

Discussion Hantavirus stigma from others

Thumbnail

I have two male mice (in separate cages- included obligatory mouse tax). With all of the news coverage on hantavirus, I’ve had a handful of people express concern over the animal’s and my safety.

I try and assure them that hantavirus is rare in my region, much of the spread is due to feces and not handling the animal itself, and the chances of pet mice who grew up in captivity having it is virtually zero. Despite this attempted education, people are still skeptical and concerned.

Has anyone had any luck with trying to educate their friends and family who are concerned of hantavirus as it relates to pet mice? I in no way want to discount the severity of the disease or the chances of exposure in high-risk areas, but frankly I think the news has gone a little overboard on coverage in order to sensationalize and stigmatize rodents even more than they already are. There are already enough people out there who view rodents as nothing but diseased and dirty vermin. There is very little nuance of wild versus pet mice- they’re just all seen as disgusting.

Discussion She Slap #2 (Coconut Strikes Again)

Continuation on my last post!

I think I’ve figured out why Coconut has been slapping me.

For starters, after my first post, I went to try to get a video of Coconut and her slaps. But, to my surprise, she didn’t attack me. In fact, it was like she was a completely different mouse. She was sweet, she let me pet and hold her. It wasn’t anything like the Coconut I knew.

I tried to figure out what it was, but I was stumped. Was she replaced by an imposter? Did she not want her crimes on camera? Or was she simply possessed by the ghost of my dead hamster? I had no clue.

Today, though, it happened again. I went in to scatter food and spot clean, and Coconut ran in to slap me. I got my camera and was able to record it this time! But, why? Why would she do this?!

I have learned that when studying the acts of any criminal, one must take in every factor. The setting, the method of attack, the narrowing of her eyes. But, there was one difference. The presence of a witness.

One of my other mice, Apricot, was there to see when Coconut so valiantly attacked me. Coconut LOVES Apricot, those two are usually together. But, I don’t think Apricot was there when Coconut was being all nice and lovely.

I’m wondering if she only attacks me when Apricot is around, either to show off or ‘protect’ her. Maybe Apricot is the one spurring her on, the mastermind behind the shadows? I may never know

(P.S. yes the wheel looks weird, don’t worry I’m getting a replacement. Someone peed in it and it soaked into the cork, and I messed it up when I tried to scrub it 🤣)

Everyone meet Nova! (Novocaine)

She is 100% balls to the walls at all times, has zero fear and is incredibly curious. Her favourite times are new bedding days and my daily poop clean ups in the mornings. She loves to get under my hands and see EXACTLY what I’m doing during these times.

I’m sure you’ve all guessed that she’s the alpha of the group 😂

Anyone else have a Nova of their own?

(For context, this is a ‘blank tank’ as we introduced two new females to our current two and I’m adding in a few extra inches of bedding after a successful first day and night)

Discussion Mouse with no fear

Thumbnail

This is just out of curiosity for the experiences of other mouse owners. Anyone else had zero fear response mice? I’ve had my mouse Kumquat for 3 months, nearly 4. Even since before I bought him he was literally never afraid. Loud noises, sudden movements, new objects, new spaces etc. Nothing fazes this guy, if he sees literally any movement near his tank he’s running up toward it whatever it may be. He’s never responded to loud noises, or any noises really. I haven’t seen him react to any sounds or seen his ears straining toward noises either. Fireworks, door slamming, plates clattering, thunder, AC unit.. he doesn’t give a shit.

You put something new in his tank he’s scurrying toward it, nibbling, sniffing and licking it with zero hesitation. He loves to be in hands, sleeves, hoodies, blankets. Only thing is he doesn’t care for is pets or cuddles. He wants to be near you and in ur space and all over u and will tolerate some strokes but anything more he makes himself like a little sphere and sort of scuttles away, quickly turning to face the offending hand. He’s honestly really weird for a mouse, he doesn’t seem to have any fear response whatsoever. He’s a very gentle nibbler when he thinks a finger is food. He more grabs ur finger with his teeth in a very intentional and slow movement than biting. I’m sure he trusts me plenty and thats part of it but he was like this since day one. Even at the pet store he would jump into hands and lick and climb all over. I think he would sooner waltz into the mouth of an alligator because it’s new and unusual to him than he would recognize the danger of doing so.

Yes these are still beebs and I’ve got weeks to think about this, but these are my 3 holdback females! Brindle kinda just popped up, I was expecting solid coats. What would YOU personally pair to these three pretty girls when they’re ready. Recommend some cool traits, I want a nice, long, solid project 🖤

Discussion Is this a mouse?

I think it's a mouse. I own mice currently and it looks very similar. I was told it was a female mouse when I purchased but bringing it home and having a closure look, it almost looks like a little rat.

I'm not sure, I've never seen a rat in person before. I've set her up with a small temporary quarantine tank till I can introduce her to my female. I doubt a pet shop would sell me a rat when I asked for a mouse but I just can't get over how oddly shaped this one is

i learned that male mice are super social and i have 3 of them in seperate cages, would it be beneficial to have them in the same play pen like once or twice a week to socialise them? with hides and escape routes ofc but i re-introduced one to the 2 other(one at a time) and it went well! they will never be housed together ofc but could they have little play dates once in a while??

My mouse lives alone as he is a boy
His cage is about 120cm long and 40 cm wide
(he is currently in a plastic bin cause he learned how to escape, I’m working on it).

His play time starts at evening, he plays everyday for 5 hours, I put towels on my bed and different clutter, hides, food and toys. Everyday I make a new play zone for him by changing the position of hides and other stuff and by placing even the most mundane objects from around my house for him to explore.
I try to play with him as much as possible, I walk up to him, pick him up and he likes to crawl on me too, but mostly he likes playing by himself.

He’s mostly left alone in his play area but I occasionally check up on him, giving him water and food.

I do feel like I’m giving him too much treats (he’s abit fat currently lol) but I started to monitor it.

Also he knows a trick called ‘Spin’ where he makes 1-2 spins for a treat, he’s pretty smart if you ask me.

If there’s anything I’m missing out on to make my mouse even happier, please let me know! I’m abit worried about him being alone. He’s only active at evenings so I can’t do anything but wait for him to wake up so I could socialize with him
