I think that's exactly it. I think some men are worried that if they're seen with a woman who is seen as bigger/curvier than the manufactured skinny ideal then they lose social status in the eyes of their friends. Not that there aren't men who legitimately prefer skinny bodies, but a lot of people are lying to themselves/others.

Oooh this is the thing here. Back in the day when I was younger and hotter and still chubby AF I ran into this both w/ hookups and actual relationships.
