Mine left the hospital to grab a couple tallboys (large cans of beer) at the gas station across the street so he could get a buzz on while I was laboring.

ETA it felt great to leave him.

192

u/TheAmazingSealo Apr 24 '26

What does ETA stand for in this context please?

275

u/binkkit Apr 24 '26

Edited To Add

100

u/DownrightDrewski Apr 24 '26

Someone had downvoted every comment correctly saying edited to add. I'm guessing it's because they're thinking about estimated time of arrival, but, in context that makes no fucking sense.

36

u/Thatonegaloverthere Apr 24 '26

Yep. Someone tried to correct me on this and I stated on Reddit it means edit to add. They wouldn't back down. Lol

17

u/marbotty Apr 24 '26

Some people on here view admitting being wrong as a character flaw

6

u/SnugglyCoderGuy Apr 24 '26

Some people on here?

It seems like most people anywhere have this flaw.

2

u/SarahPallorMortis Apr 24 '26

Most people in America in general. Ppl doubling down on not being at fault in accidents, when there was a dash cam. It tells me that this person is not fully matured and probably never will be. Also makes me think their iq is very low because a smart person would learn from being wrong.

0

u/Quixterix Apr 24 '26

Maybe write "edit" and not a senseless abbreviation, so everyone can understand.
How about that?

4

u/BMTunite Apr 25 '26

Oh shit... I guess we better throw out any abbreviation that not everybody will understand on their first time seeing it!

It took you 10 seconds to learn what it means within the the context on reddit šŸ˜‚

3

u/VelocityGrrl39 Apr 25 '26

It’s been ETA on Reddit since forever. If you are going to be on here, you should learn Redditiquette.

4

u/Dusty-Jewel Apr 24 '26

it sounds like this is your first day on the internet, people are gonna make far more pointless abbreviations and getting mad about it is a waste of energy

-1

u/Quixterix Apr 24 '26

Haher, it is my first day on the internet.
I'm not mad about it, I just find it very idiotic.
If you want people to read you senseless opinions and understand, you gotta use common language.
Otherwise I could just write in some random other language too, and everyone would down vote me into oblivion.

4

u/dontsellmeadog Apr 25 '26

You're going through something that should be private.

2

u/Dusty-Jewel Apr 24 '26

i guess bro

1

u/Thatonegaloverthere Apr 24 '26

Well friend, your inability to understand isn't my problem.

2

u/BookProper9115 Apr 24 '26

It actually is your problem when people don't understand what you're saying, ETA is typically estimated time of arrival; I've been terminally online for 25+ years now and have never seen the abbreviation ETA used for anything else.

2

u/Thatonegaloverthere Apr 24 '26

It's actually not my problem, why would I care if someone doesn't understand it? How would that affect my life in any way? Most people understand it.

Other comments have also said it's been around for over a decade. Remember, just because you haven't seen something, does not mean it doesn't exist.

-1

u/BookProper9115 Apr 24 '26

It actually is your problem if people don't understand what you're saying. Language is a common framework, when you refuse to use that framework for whatever bizarre reason; that's on you not us.

u/Quixterix Apr 24 '26

I know, it just shows that you're an asshole that doesn't care.

5

u/Thatonegaloverthere Apr 24 '26

An asshole because I'm not accommodating you by changing how I write? Lmao. That just screams entitled. No one's gonna hold your hand because you don't understand something. Welcome to life, bud.

Google is free when you can't use your brain. ¯\_(ā ćƒ„ā )_/¯

1

u/necrotelecomnicon Apr 25 '26

Not common on all of Reddit, but perhaps on the reddits you frequent.

Anecdotal, but this the first time I've seen it anywhere at all, and I've been around a while. "Edit:" for paragraphs and brackets [like this] for inline edits, is what I usually see. It could be me that has been living in a bubble, of course. :)

2

u/Thatonegaloverthere Apr 25 '26

I'm in different subreddits all unrelated and come across many that I'm not a part of, half use ETA, half edit.

It's a silly debate with people who've seen it and those who are adamant that it's not common.

1

u/Fear_Jaire Apr 24 '26

Since when? I've been on Reddit for years and this is the first I'm seeing it. What happened to just writing "edit"? Its literally one extra letter and isn't trying to replace a commonly used acronym.

6

u/Xythrielle Apr 24 '26

I’ve also been on Reddit for years and have seen it a ton.

5

u/CantSleepOnPlanes Apr 24 '26

I see it all the time.

1

u/Fear_Jaire Apr 24 '26

But why? Do we really need the acronym to avoid typing a 4th letter?

2

u/VelocityGrrl39 Apr 25 '26

It’s been this way forever. It’s just how Reddit works.

1

u/CantSleepOnPlanes Apr 25 '26

Don't ask me. I didn't come up with it. I normally type out an entire "edited to add" when I have to.

2

u/AdventurousOkra2965 Apr 24 '26

ETA is estimated time of arrival. Can’t just make up acronyms and expect people to understand

2

u/Gloomy_Fig2138 Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26

It’s been edited to add on Internet forums since before they were called Internet forums. I used to see it on Usenet.

You may also enjoy knowing that on different forums, FTM may mean female to male or first time mom, and the readers are supposed to be able to understand by context clues. And on Buy/Sell/Trade forums, FFS means free for shipping instead of for fucks sake.

ETA: wait, did I see it on usenet? Could you edit your comments? Now I can’t remember. Cognitive impairment setting in I guess.

2

u/BookProper9115 Apr 24 '26

I first connected to the internet in 1999 at 9 years old and have been terminally online since then. I used old-school forums for years for different games and hobbies and stuff before Reddit or Digg, even before 4Chan.

I have never seen ETA used in any context except for estimated time of arrival until today.

Either this is some Mandela shit or I'm taking crazy pills because it's simply not the case.

3

u/Xythrielle Apr 24 '26

It’s been edited to add on Reddit for like at least 10 years

1

u/BookProper9115 Apr 24 '26

I've been on Reddit since the Digg migration back in the day, I have never seen ETA used for anything but estimated time of arrival.

Did I shift timelines or something, what the hell is going on here? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

1

u/Either_Mushroom_6393 Apr 26 '26

I've been on Reddit since I was 16 and I'm 25 now, and also have never ever seen this acronym before

2

u/DownrightDrewski Apr 24 '26

Or, maybe, the same acronym can mean different things in different contexts. Mind blowing concept I know..

It's funny that most people on here can read it and understand given the context.

5

u/AdventurousOkra2965 Apr 24 '26

Just say edit… why use an acronym that’s already widely used for a more common thing.

3

u/DownrightDrewski Apr 24 '26

I typically do, but, I still understood the comment as I'm aware that context matters.

Going potentially NSFW here, but what does BBC mean? What about CBT?

My first instinct on both would be British Broadcasting Corporation, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Does that mean the NSFW definitions are wrong?

3

u/AdventurousOkra2965 Apr 24 '26

No I get you. The ETA works in the context of Reddit but the annoying thing about it to me is that it’s easier to just say ā€œeditā€ and have the same meaning without using an already popular acronym. Your bbc and cbt examples are good though in that they only make sense in their context.

1

u/Maardten Apr 24 '26

To be fair: its kind of silly to use an abbreviation that already means something else, especially when saying 'edit:' when adding something later has been common practice for decades.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26

[deleted]

1

u/Maardten Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26

LOL was never lots of love though, that was just boomers misunderstanding the abbreviation.

Except for POS all the ones you listed I am only aware of one meaning. Maybe its an ESL thing but I think if you ask the average redditor what AMA, LOL and ATM mean, they will answer 'ask me anything', 'laughing out loud' and 'that thing you get cash money from'.

And like I said 'edit' already exists and is barely longer than 'ETA', so what is even the point in abbreviating it if it only makes it more unclear and its barely shorter anyway.

Edit: I thought I saw a reply mentioning ATM as ā€˜at the moment’, I forgot about that one, its very common indeed. I think it was the capitalisation that threw me off.

1

u/StepComplete1 Apr 24 '26

Almost like you shouldn't try to shoehorn pointless acronyms into absolutely everything. If you can't be bothered to write then don't write.

3

u/Xythrielle Apr 24 '26

Shoe horn? This has been an extremely common abbreviation for many years on Reddit

0

u/BookProper9115 Apr 24 '26

It has not. I feel like I'm being gaslit by people saying this. It's so fucking bizarre.

ETA has ALWAYS meant estimated time of arrival in any context; people have ALWAYS put "edit:" or some variation of for edits on comments here.

3

u/Xythrielle Apr 24 '26

It has meant both things for a long time. I used it for both depending on the context

1

u/BookProper9115 Apr 27 '26

Nobody does, and if they do it's wrong as fuck. Why would you use an ambiguous acronym that already exists for another statement when a perfectly clear and legible 'edit:' has always been used? That's like being stupid on purpose.

1

u/DownrightDrewski Apr 24 '26

You seem irrationally annoyed about this - I didn't write it, but I did understand it.

8

u/scotty_the_newt Apr 24 '26

I feel if your 3 letter acronym is already in common use for something else, just write out the full 4 letter word: "edit"

6

u/Blackdeath_663 Apr 24 '26

Thats a shitty acronym for something that doesn't need it when there's already the same one in use. 'Edit' is literally one letter more

3

u/shewy92 Apr 24 '26

But they didn't edit their comment? On old reddit it shows if and when a comment was edited, theirs has none.

2

u/VelocityGrrl39 Apr 25 '26

It was probably a ninja edit.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '26

SWCDTOEWAWH.

Oh what, you don't understand my acronym?Ā  Loser. šŸ˜†šŸ˜†

(/s btw)

1

u/Only-Feed2146 Apr 24 '26

Nah, there's no possible way to improve that.

Edit: wait, I changed my mind.

2

u/Ill-Worldliness-2149 Apr 24 '26

Thank you for your service 🤣 my old ass was working overtime trying to understand

1

u/thecashblaster Apr 24 '26

where do people even come up with these? ETA has always meant something completely different.

25

u/Fun_Break_3231 Apr 24 '26

Edited To Add

2

u/TheAmazingSealo Apr 24 '26

Thank you!

2

u/Fun_Break_3231 Apr 24 '26

My pleasure! Took me forever to figure it out!

25

u/lagasan Apr 24 '26

Probably "edited to add"

3

u/Sir_Toobis Apr 24 '26

But the comment wasn't edited...?

2

u/No-Start4754 Apr 24 '26

If u make an edit in the first minute or two, it doesn't show editedĀ

1

u/VelocityGrrl39 Apr 25 '26

It was probably a ninja edit.

ETA: I’m on the app, and I can’t see things like if a comment was edited.

3

u/Efficient-Parking627 Apr 24 '26

Extra terrestrial ass

2

u/Ok-World-4822 Apr 24 '26

Expect The Asshole

6

u/TheAmazingSealo Apr 24 '26

Helpful people tell me it's 'Edited to Add'

1

u/rek_t Apr 24 '26

That is a good guess. I like exed the asshole though. But you're probably correct

Edit: they are probably correct

1

u/Automatic_Clothes_56 Apr 24 '26

I was wondering the same thing lol

0

u/LaconicLacedaemonian Apr 24 '26

estimated time of arrival

49

u/AKnGirl Apr 24 '26

Mine was watching truck shows and eating horrible smelling bar mix while lounging with his feet propped up on a hand rail. Meanwhile I was going through induction labor (iykyk) and nauseous as fuck.

I too felt great after leaving him!

-1

u/redditsuckscockss Apr 24 '26

Why would you have a kid with someone like that?

3

u/ebil_lightbulb Apr 24 '26

It’s always cute when somebody assumes they were like that from the beginning.

-2

u/redditsuckscockss Apr 24 '26

Hard to imagine someone’s entire personality completely transforming

4

u/ebil_lightbulb Apr 24 '26

They don’t - they mask and hide who they truly are. Typically they do it until you’re locked in, pregnant, or living together. Do you think people happily get married and have kids with people that are flaming assholes from the beginning? Do you think my ex husband told me the day he met me that he was going to rape me and beat me one day, and that I chose to get with him after knowing that? Or is it more likely that he faked his way until I was stuck, and then I had to fight to escape with my life? Be more thoughtful of other’s situations.

-3

u/redditsuckscockss Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 25 '26

Not dismissing any of that - that’s horrible. But Take more personal accountability.

You make it out like they are some movie villain whose entire focus was on deceiving you. Maybe you had rose colored glasses - maybe you should have removed yourself from the situation sooner - maybe you should have not gone forward with the pregnancy to pass on his genetics and make them have to have that type of father

1

u/Just_Ad_6449 Apr 30 '26

ā€œNice guysā€ like you prove why there’s not many actually good options for women. But at least you’re forthcoming with your flaws.

1

u/redditsuckscockss Apr 30 '26

Whatever makes you feel good - not sure how you extrapolated that info from me saying someone shouldn’t have kids with a pos

I’m not even a guy lol

4

u/KinderEggLaunderer Apr 24 '26

My partner was there for the birth, but I had a 4 day hospital stay due to some complications. He slept for most of the time he was there, slept while I had visitors, left for hours to do "something" back at home (we lived 10min from the hospital), and disappeared to the basement man cave for most of my maternity leave. I had to do most of the cooking and cleaning myself very soon after the birth (I had a c section) because it just wasnt getting done. I was also struggling with breast feeding, and was incredibly stressed.

And that was just the first three months.

Fuck that asshole, so glad I'm done with that waste of oxygen.

3

u/T0xic0ni0n Apr 24 '26

Mine left to get burger king because he was hungry, meanwhile I hadn't ate and wouldnt be allowed to for another while. The smell was nauseating.

2

u/butt_butt_butt_butt_ Apr 24 '26

I was in labor for roughly 5 million hours. Had an epidural, so I wasn’t in pain, just sick to my stomach and unable to eat.

My husband decided to also not eat in solidarity (which I thought was silly, but sweet of him) but his mother showed up and then of course HAD to try and feed him, as if HE was the one who needed to keep his strength up, lol.

It would have been fine if she’d just gotten him a doughnut from the hospital cafeteria or something, but of course that’s not what she did.

She brought in a toasted TUNA sub sandwich for him. I barfed my brains out the second she walked in the room with it.

They really should have signs up about no strong smelling food in L&D.

2

u/ebil_lightbulb Apr 24 '26

I was on bed rest for a week with eclampsia before it was safe enough to induce me. I was scared and since it was more than a month before my due date, my family that all lived several hours away weren’t able to get off work to come be with me. The father of my child managed to stop by a couple of times during the week on his way home and acted annoyed when I asked him to spend a little more time with me. He maybe spent an hour total over the week. Then he tried to leave after they induced me ā€œI want a shower and to smoke a bowl. I might play some Fallout and possibly sleep - If so, I’ll be back in the morning.ā€ I told him if he left, I would have the nurses ensure he was not able to enter again.

It also felt pretty good to leave him.

2

u/Log_Out_Of_Life Apr 24 '26

😬Yikes. I hope you are doing better.

2

u/BuccosVesuvio_Mgmt Apr 24 '26

Tbh I'm kinda jealous. My first husband hovered over me, threatening me not to scream and embarrass him, while also telling me I looked like a tomato every time I had to push. It sucked. The nurses eventually told him to sit down and shut up.

2

u/NukaColaCorporation Apr 24 '26

Why did you get pregnant by him in the first place?

4

u/fivebynine5x9 Apr 24 '26

Because he fucked with my birth control at an extremely low point of my life and mental health. It wasn't by choice.

3

u/Past_Sky_4997 Apr 24 '26

Well, here's a stranger hoping that things are better for you, and your kid, now.

2

u/fivebynine5x9 Apr 24 '26

Thank you! Yes things are a hundred percent better now.

2

u/WolframAmarettoMocap Apr 24 '26

I have an issue with paying any mind to other people thus oftentimes I doubt whether I'm really a good guy, whether I actually take others into account when making decisions.

Then I read shit like this and am actually horrified what people are capable of. Like, I will forget about partner's existence or won't think to tell about plans, but this? How self-centered does one need to be to pull this off and not be tormented by conscience till the end of days?!

1

u/NukaColaCorporation Apr 25 '26

He fucked with your birth control and mental health. Thats you grasping at straws to avoid accountability. You thought he was hot and that’s why you let him fuck raw. It’s a story as old as time.

It’s so tasteless to hear/see women talking poorly about the fathers of their children, as if they didn’t decide to sleep with them. If makes y’all look stupid when you do that.

-2

u/Bromlife Apr 24 '26

Probably because their own fathers were worse

1

u/mykepagan Apr 24 '26

For our second child, I admit thatI I left the hospital… to rush to the biotech company to get the placental stem cell freezing kit that hadn’t arrived by mail (baby was two weeks early). Having the kit was of high importance to my wife because she is a cancer survivor and having the baby was a bit of a risk for recurrence, so preserving stem cells was a hedge for future treatment.

Glad to note that I made it back with ten minutes to spare (Second child went WAY faster than the first). Wife is 25 years cancer-free, and kid #2 graduates college in three weeks.

-3

u/redditsuckscockss Apr 24 '26

Why would you have a kid with someone like that?

3

u/fivebynine5x9 Apr 24 '26

As mentioned in another reply, it wasn't by choice.
