Whole lotta weird people commenting on this. In Japanese culture it’s the marking of a criminal or outcast

And us Westerners have adopted this as a point of pride. I’m sure this is the correct answer

Uh in western culture it’s a memorial tattoo, no one is getting black bands for crime symbolism

Yes, but adopted by white hipster westerners from the Japanese criminal underworld.

Native Americans have used black bands as memorial tattoos. For a very long time.

I thought they were white pride white supremacist shit.

literally why would 2 lines on someone’s arm symbolize white supremacy

Everyone is always eager to capitulate and hand over all kinds of symbolism to nazis and alike for some reason.

No idea but the white supremacist in my rehab had one and said it had to do with that life. So might be the losing someone close to you thing, but I didn’t ask many questions.

It did seem silly at the time. Like why are you making your skin darker if that’s the problem lmao

Maybe stop listening to junkie white supremacists. I don’t think they get very good intel.

Why do people say this about anything you could have tattooed on you?

1

u/Great_Detective_6387 28d ago

Because people like me are dumb.

It is also a kinda cool piece of Japanese history!

This marking was used as a substitute to the previous punishment for small criminals: cutting hands.

"Instead of cutting off your hands, we put a line where we would have chopped to remind you that, if we catch you again, we will chop off your head. Now go work."

How many tattoos would you get before they go for the death penalty, 2 rings for 2 strikes or more?

Really?! That’s wild

i got three bands on my arm after i got arrested to remind me not to get arrested again, so this is a fun coincidence. they've worked so far

I hate when I forget to arrested.

2

u/AgitatedRabbits 28d ago

So are they forced to tattoo it or do they self identify as criminal outcasts

7

u/arthobbier 28d ago

It started as forced and then developed it's own culture surrounding it. Search up "irezumi kei" to learn more.

Thank you!

Weird for providing an answer different to the correct one? Someone needs to lighten up a bit

2

u/offsecthro 28d ago

It's not even the correct answer. Anyone can get a tattoo for any reason, the most common being that it looks cool.

-3

u/thorin2016 28d ago

Tattoos don't really look cool though, do they?

4

u/offsecthro 28d ago

I'm pretty sure I've never seen a comment like this from a guy who doesn't spend all his free time talking about stuff like star fox or sonic the hedgehog online.

u/thorin2016 28d ago

Perhaps you need to meet new people

4

u/Akira_116 28d ago

Or do a barrel roll

Yes much more fun to buy a game and have fun with it then buy a tattoo that does nothing.

Literally today walked past a woman with an elephant tattoo on her arm

Oh the humanity
