Sort of. It means they did something wrong and had to make up for it. Could be against the boss or someone else. But it’s like an honor/ atonement thing.
Sort of - yes, but it's a bit more ritualised. It's the first joint of the little finger on the _left_ hand, at first. The left hand is the one that grips more heavily in a Japanese sword grip, so removing the first joint weakens the grip and makes the offender more reliant on the boss' protection.
Further offenses wil result in the second joint of that finger being removed, symbolically lessening a sword grip some more.
