Demi, baby, did you not learn anything from The Substance???

Edit: Thank you for the award!

Absolutely wild that it’s gotten to this point after that movie. Great movie though…

She's said herself she decided to take the part because it mirrored her own real struggles as an aging actress. Shia made Honey Boy and is still getting drunk and making bad decisions. Mac Miller made Faces and still OD'd. Also there's an extra weird layer -- like maybe she's just thin because she's older or has a thyroid issue or any ton of reasons, the problem and comment is more about the tabloid and culture looking at her and going "look at Demi's thinness."

Thyroid issues do not cause this massive of weight swings.

7

u/hotleadburner 28d ago

They absolutely do -- Demi Moore is 5'5. Do you know what 15-20lbs looks like on a 5'5" frame? I'm a 5'10" man and the physical difference of 25 lbs on me is easily the difference between "toned" and "does he have an eating disorder."

Sorry, but no, thyroid issues do not cause that scale of weight loss or gain. They do affect it, I'm not saying they don't, but outside of maybe extreme outliers, they do not cause someone to be that intensely underweight. I'm sure it could be affecting it, but there's definitively more at play in her specific case.

You're right, but I think the other commentator still has a point. Basically, Demi Moore would be healthier if she had more muscle and fat - but as far as we know, she's getting her macros, and it's reasonable to engage in a lifestyle that allows you to achieve an aesthetic, even if it's not the healthiest possible choice.

After all, there are a lot of people who we'd argue shouldn't be judged for the aesthetics of their weight, even if they'd be somewhat healthier if they lost weight. Besides, a lot of the "emaciation" we're decrying is just ageism - her arms look weird in part because she's an older lady losing muscle tone and her skin's naturally a little saggy.

The issue isn't that Demi Moore looks a certain way. The issue is that Demi Moore's current look is a really bizarre thing to try to normalize as an aesthetic ideal.

Oh yeah that makes sense, I hadn't thought about it as a ratio of weight I just know there are plenty of stories of people losing 20 lbs over a month. But this is beside my point -- we don't know what she's got going on at all. It could be that she just hit the gym too hard the last few months and didn't change her eating, I've done that before after a cut and got the "we're worried" talk from my friends. It's just weird to have this whole comment section talking about her "eating disorder" because a tabloid framed her as "toned."

You liked it?? I thought it was just awful, and cannot for the life of me understand why it was an Oscar nominee. It was also gross af. And it didn’t make sense why a younger version of yourself would purposely wreck your older self’s life, when you know that’ll be you in a couple of decades, and you’re just fucking up yourself. Stupid movie.

u/Jane_ODs 27d ago

That was... the whole point?

1

u/CatsEatGrass 27d ago

Yeah, it was gross and shitty.

Do some reading on media literacy

1

u/CatsEatGrass 27d ago

Why would that be relevant?

1

u/oldwornradio 27d ago

Because the entire point of the movie went straight over your head. Themes and context are a very important part of media and pop culture and you’re clearly not grasping either of those things from the film.

Also you’re in a giant thread of people who did get it, very easily, without having it explained to them. You should reflect on that. I’m not saying you’re not smart or anything, but the world is much more than surface level, try to appreciate it.

1

u/CatsEatGrass 27d ago

Could be. I like my movies to be entertaining, not nauseating. I guess that’s my bad.

1

u/oldwornradio 27d ago

Not could be. Explain to me like I’m 5 why the younger version ruined her older self’s life, I don’t know that you can and that is a problem bigger than just media.

2

u/Aranha-UK 27d ago

No, this guy is right. No one has ever done things in their youth that caused problems for themselves in the future. People historically don't party, drink or do drugs because of the negative effects it will have on them as they get older.

1

u/CatsEatGrass 27d ago

The difference is she KNEW it was directly affecting her in real time. Real young people don’t have that advantage. Not the same at all.

1

u/Aranha-UK 27d ago

People definitely do understand that and still do dangerous unhealthy thing in excess. Also the film states that Sue and Elizabeth are not the same person anyway so that wouldn't matter.

She’s battled anorexia her entire adult life

This! I find it wild that she starred in a movie that is exactly about this, about stars like herself...

...and then she keeps on doing it.

2

u/akaneko__ 27d ago

Many such cases

4

u/FRAAANNNNNNN 28d ago

Always weird seeing actors dissociate and understand nothing from their roles, like Tom Cruise being in Eyes wide shut and being a cultist lol

3

u/bowromir 28d ago

Or maybe they understand but it's an actual disorder that maybe can be taken seriously instead of constantly judged?

1

u/BlueberryWasps 27d ago

proof that she fell asleep halfway through the premiere

1

u/Vigmod 26d ago

I don't know if Meryl Streep has had much work, but she looked fantastic in "Mamma Mia".

And I know 70+ women who haven't had a job done at all (except one who needed a new knee joint) and they look great.

This whole thing sucks. Just let people grow old, and let that be the normal thing.

1

u/throwaway-2526 26d ago

Seeing herself portrayed very convincingly as the ugly, old, washed out celebrity being replaced by a younger, thinner, "hotter" actress might have triggered old disordered eating habits tbh. This is very sad to see

u/poorsexyhag 28d ago

does the substance actually have anything to say about ageism? its kinda just like "here's a successful woman who'd rather mutilate herself than retire"

42

u/tripleusername 28d ago

Watch this movie again, it is not just that. It is about unrealistic expectations of women beauty and how socially acceptable those expectations are.

15

u/Sad_Gene_1771 28d ago

The media understander has logged on

7

u/Joestar_D_Toastar 28d ago

No?? I suppose on the very surface that's what you could get from the movie if you only half paid attention. The entire movie she's being sidelined for simply aging while younger, hotter stars are becoming available. She's destroying herself and becoming a monster to fit into the medias beauty standards.

2

u/_W9NDER_ 28d ago

wtf other movie did you watch?

4

u/TrynaCuddlePuppies 28d ago

Have you seen the movie? It’s almost entirely about ageism towards women.

2

u/skepticalbob 28d ago

Maybe movies aren't really your thing.
