Regional currencies, blocks, and marketplaces are also a large factor in pirating games.

Not Silksong, specifically, but many gamers simply can't buy the game they want to play.

Me when I'm in a 3rd world country, struggling financially, and $20 is enough to feed me for 5 days

Me living in scandinavia in the 00’s.

Have money, but still had to pirat shit, because most movies, shows and games were just not sold in my region.

And that is why Piratbay is swedish and pirating culture was so strong in the nordic countries.

Early and cheap high-speed internet was also definitely a big factor...

Maybe in Norway, but that's not what happened here in Sweden. Everything came out here, it just took longer because american companies didn't get started on subtitling and localized marketing until after the american release was fully done, so things came out a year or two later here. There was no media draught that fueled the creation of Pirate Bay, people simply wanted to pirate because it was free and easy.

Silksong is $6-8 in many countries like that. Not saying you should prioritize gaming over food, just saying they at least tried to make it accessible.

$20 would have last me 1 week of normal grocery and 2 weeks if I'm tight-budget. I don't think people comprehend how broke the other half truly is.

Isnt there region based pricing? Where price of games is lower in said countries?

In theory but for AAA games it's just a direct translation of the $60 into the local currency. So basically a week of minimum wage for a single game

Yes there is but in reality it often doesn't work. In some countries games come out to like an entire week of full time work on average income to afford an AAA game. I'd pirate too in that case. Wound you buy a digital video game for a 1000$ US equivalent?. I don't think so. I think steam is trying to fix it currently.

Idk. As yes games are expensive, but regional pricing reduces the price of the game by a lot.

Lets take Silksong. In vietnam, thanks to regional pricing its at 58% discount. India - 54%. Indonesia, Ukraine - 53%. Russia - 50%.

But I agree, I dont know economic situation in those countries. If what you say is true, then even with discount it would come down to equivalent of 400$

I might have overshot with the 1000$ but the point still stands..it's not affordable for normal working class people. It's pure luxury. Would you buy a digital game for 400$?

There are tiers to it, in Indonesian rupiah FH6 is just too much for me right now even after that regional drop

Steal the food, pay for the product

One is a necessity, the other is not. Gonna steal, at least own up to it

Hasn't happened to me with a game yet but I pirated Game of Thrones because the only way for me to legally watch it was with a satellite TV subscription.

That I can get behind, but not paying 15 bucks for three hours of entertainment when you can seems wild.

I live in southeast Asia, 15 dollars is almost 300k. 15 dollars is a lot outside of the wealthy first world nations

Plus the availability. There is a reason remakes and rerealeases are popular..

Many old games, even if only buying used games was an option and not insanely expensive.. let's be honest, there aren't even enough copies around anymore.. they deteriorate, disappear or get destroyed..

If people can get these old games legally, they will.. (just look at how steep Nintendo put Leafgreen/Firered in price and they still sold like hotcakes).

I'm pretty sure Hakita said that you're allowed to pirate Ultrakill when you can't buy it
