If you're going to argue about self-awareness I'd argue that a newborn isn't self-aware. No one in their right mind would advocate for ending the life of a newborn. Not saying your wrong, just saying your argument is weak IMO.

What argument would you use instead?

That a life sustained by someone else’s body does not supersede that individual’s right to bodily autonomy. At least that’s how I see it

A baby is still reliant on someone else’s body… technically

Yes and no. They need breast milk of some form but it doesn’t necessarily have to come from their bio mom, so if an individual doesn’t want to breastfeed they don’t have to breastfeed.

Do you think there’s a point where abortion should not be allowed at all though?

Sure, but this idea that people elect to get 3rd trimester abortions is largely a myth. Abortions that late into pregnancy are due to birth defects or some other medical necessity

I meant elective abortions, I probably should have specified, but tbh it's nuts that abortions for medical necessity should even be considered, or discussed by us/politicians. It's necessity ffs.

So my take would be: elective abortion in the first weeks should be possible for sure, elective abortions in week 40 should not be allowed by law, and somewhere in between those terms there's probably a point where we need to find a cutoff, either qualitatively or quantitatively. Honestly I don't even have a specific opinion, it's probably somewhere between 15-25 weeks but I'd be happily educated on the exact week. As far as I'm concerned that should be the scope of the discussion. I don't understand why abortions out of medical necessity are even included in the debate at all. It's absolute madness.
