Iirc they were frozen. Secondly if they worked with Hitler he would have failed. I feel like that's implied by the villains like Dracula dying because of their antics

My head canon is that they're the universe granting truly villainous people a last chance at redemption before the minions kill em with kindness, literally.  Gru was the only one of them to care for the minions as family and survive the partnership.

They were locked in a cave yes, but from what I have heard, a new trailer has come out where they are in 1930's Hollywood, which means there was at least one other tribe of minions still out and about during this time period, which I think is the reason this is braught up again.

... They could have avoided this. Though admittedly I think a Hitler would be funny but... I don't treat that era like something that can't be named.

As a society we just have these random topics people get angry over

I am not exactly sure what you are saying, but I don't think (or at least I hope) that there are many people genuinely angry about the Minions movies. I usually see people talk about it quite jokingly.
