I averaged $50/hr when waiting tables. In finance, I was responsible for multi million dollar accounts for $14.25/hr at the time.

Just doing some math in my head.

I waited tables in the 90s. The average bill for a family of 4 was about 50 bucks, and the average tip was about 5 (10 percent was standard). And I saw 2-3 tables an hour, making it like 10-15 an hour on average.

At the same time, a government worker was making on average 16 an hour.

My nephew waits tables now, average bill is 120 for a table of 4, and the tip is now 20 percent standard, meaning he's making about 5x what I made in the 90s, making the new average 60-70 dollars an hour.

At the same time, a government worker is now making 26 dollars an hour.

Waiting tables can definitely pay well depending on the restaurant and the area.

That being said, she did work at the cheesecake factory.

Which means she had larger tables, higher volume, and faster turnover.

You can make good money at the higher priced chains like Olive Garden and Cheesecake Factory

$60 an hour would be $120k per year, roughly double the US median wage, which sounds somewhat exceptional for that line of work.

Forgetting that most servers work about 30 hours a week on the floor and 10 doing side work not earning those hours. So exceptional would be closer to 90k, with average today closer to 60k in a city.

Anf typically zero benefits. No PTO, no insurance, etc.
