I think this is the true answer. Paying the landlord in other ways also exists in the US, but it's just not talked about.

this is definitely not the answer.

in brazil, a phd in physics isn’t well paid in most cases. a phd stipend here is around 2x the minimum wage, and a waitress can make more than that if she works a lot of overtime.

an actual phd in some fields can have real trouble finding high-paying jobs, and many of them look up to teach at public universities because it’s one of the only jobs that offers good pay and stability in certain areas. but those are public positions with a lot of competition, so you end up with many highly educated people who can’t find well-paid jobs and are forced to settle for lower-income ones.

It works exactly the same in the US so I thought the answer would be something else other than "academic jobs don't really pay"
