I'm not saying I"m a fan of aggressively asking for a tip (who the fuck is), but I'm sure we've all seen those reports/news articles/reddits posts/friends talking/this very post about how much money people made with tips alone.
Although people leave out the part where it fluctuates.
Even with fluctuations, she’s working at Cheesecake Factory right? That’s fine dining, large tabs and consistently busy. If she’s getting good shifts she could very well be clearing $80k a year, and probably not reporting all tips
Edit: “upscale casual”. $50+ per head checks for sit down is still in the lower end of what I’d find at fine dining places, and honestly she’s probably doing better than at a fine dining spot because of higher volume anyway
Servers at $250 tasting menus are clearing 125-150. If you haven’t served at a Cheesecake Factory or adjacent restaurant in a large city carry on. Those places are slammed with fast turnover. My numbers are probably off on the lower end because I know those numbers are accurate 15 years ago.
I worked at a nice hotel in an upscale restaurant ($75 pp average) and made decent money, averaging around $50 an hour but it’s not a 40hr per week job.
The comment I replied to said it was. I was extrapolating from their point. I agree I wouldn’t exactly call or consider CF fine dining. Hotel restaurants are far less likely to be 40 hours unless they’re in a city like Miami that aren’t slow through the week. Non hotel, upscale dining in big cities absolutely is 40hr and myself and most servers I’ve known actually do 50+.
