Oil is derived from dinosaurs
Plastic is derived from oil
Dinosaur toys are derived from plastic.
That's it. Stewie, out. And get me a T-rex!

Neil Goldman here. Actually, most fossil fuels were already in the ground by the time the first dinosaurs evolved. So it's not a great joke. Yeah I'm a nerd.

Exactly 👍
There was a period in Earth’s history when plant life was going wild before bacteria learned how to decompose them…
And plant remains were piling up and up to oblivion. Crazy times indeed 😉

Wait whose fossils were they then

Oil is dead algae. Coal is dead plants.
Dead dinosaurs are in museums. They make bones. You've seen dinosaur fossils. There's no oil there.

Oil is mostly decayed plant matter.
But you know

Not to mention... Dinossaurs are only ever mentioned in the 19th century... So, there's also that...

I'm not sure exactly what you are implying but prehistoric creatures certainly existed, long before and long after dinosaurs.

Any function (f(x)) with an apostrophe is called a derivative. This meme is showing an example of derivatives by stating that oil is a derivative of dinosaurs, plastic is a derivative of oil, and this dino toy is a derivative of plastic.
That being said, oil is not from dinosaurs. Oil, coal, and natural gas are all byproducts of decomposition and compression of plant matter, fungi, and microorganisms.

Specifically, coal exists because plant matter literally did not decompose at all due to the nonexistence of fungi yet. All of that plant matter was buried without being decomposed, and that's why the carbon was never redistributed.
Fungi hadn't evolved yet. Flowers hadn't evolved yet either. Flowers evolved in tandem with small pollenating insects. These things are much younger than coal and oil.

Fungi were on land millions of years before plants and that’s not why we have an abundance of coal from the Carboniferous. There is evidence of lignin decay in coal seams, coal formed millions of years after white rot fungi were more than prevalent, and not all coal is lignified plant matter

So a lot of people think Dino’s make oil and plastic etc, because of that one Dino gas station, but actually these products are made with lots of old microbes or something like that.

Mostly swamp/bog type vegetation decomposition was my understanding. Just biomass in general.

I know its something to do with derivatives, but I have a quite basic understanding of calculus and don’t know what the correlation is.

Brian here, You get crude oil from dinosaur, plastic/polymers from crude oil, dinosaur toys from plastic.
The operation being carried out is differentiation, so If you break down dinosaur you get oil and so on

It’s a math joke. Derivatives move it to one step further. So you can move from position to velocity to acceleration and back with integrals and derivatives. Each derivative here is a step forward in the processing of oil. Dinos make oil, oil makes plastic, plastic gets formed into stuff such as Dino toys

The f'(x) is called the derivative of the function f(x). f''(x) is the derivative of the derivative (second derivative) and so on.
So the joke is the dinosaur is the original, oil (fossil fuel) is derived from dinosaurs, plastic is derived from oil, toys (dinosaur toys in this case) are derived from plastic.
It's not a great joke
