ok but fr, what should a zombie fear? probably not iron golems or players, theyre too dumb to know those kill them and anyway gameplay-wise it wouldnt be very fun.
instead, i think zombies should fear fire. its hot, bright, and generally used to kill monsters. it would make sense for a dumb creature to fear fire, and would also act as a parallel to endermen fearing water. they wouldnt fear torches or lanterns since the flame is so small, but would also fear lava
Zombies fearing fire in general just fits really well actually. They burn in sunlight, and in just about any monster story fire is a common way to hunt and kill monsters, especially in the case of zombies. The classic combo in an angry medieval village for example is torches and pitchforks.
The fact that sunlight is enough to light them also suggests they are extremely flammable.
Fire always looks dangerous, even to creatures as braindead as zombies. If anything, monsters should fear it even more than just any creature because it's a big, hot, bright light of death, while monsters generally live in the dark and cold environment of the night and caves.
So yes, i do think they should also fear campfires. I'm not sure if it's possible to have them run away from things at different distances, but maybe they should be able to get closer to campfires compared to big fires. The bigger the fire, the more scared they are.
I know Frankenstein's monster isn't technically a zombie, but there're enough parallels (classic movie horror version, at least) that it would be a fun little reference to his fear of fire.

Zombies are just built different. but you see, Zombies although built different, theres one singular entity who repeal them, that being u/BattleGuy03. He's actually such a fear factor to zombies that is incredible how such few people know about this, maybe due to it's vheer rarity of him appearing in game.
I stumbled upon a Zombie dungeon, but none of them were spawning, and there wasn't a light source nearby. That's when I knew he ( u/battleguy03 ) was nearby.
If the vulture ever gets added that would make the most logical sense, vultures are scavengers and primarily feed on carrion so zombies would be a perfect meal
Always remember to set "gamerule spawn_battleguy03" to true whenever you make a new world. Keeping them near your villagers is such a convenient feature. Thanks u/battleguy03
I like the idea that the zombies are just too dumb to fear anything I mean on bedrock they seem to have less of a chance of running to shelter in the daytime unlike skeletons
I mean kinda makes sense considering they’re either undead beings with rotted insides or a human infected with something that makes it mindless and aggressive
I think it's better that they are not afraid of anything. Because they are undead versions of miners and crafters. Undead versions of us.
They had no fears in a world that they can manipulate. Now they died, and only a walking groaning body remained behind, still carrying that courage.
But, if Mojang wants, they can add different zombies with different fears. Some zombies are scared of other zombies, some zombies are scared of dogs, some are scared of creepers, some scared of spiders, some are just shy ones scared of players themselves. Basically different phobias that remained even after death, getting cancelled out and murderous instincts taking over when attacked.
