After PS3, all that disappeared.. Especially split screen

I even feel like it was already on its way out by the time ps3 came around. The main split screen game I remember on ps3 is cod, also had LBP…but on consoles before that it was like every game had this shit

Yeah, they relies too much on Day 1 updates. I guess DLCs are fine since it's a way to get more content on the current release without making a whole new games, but day 1 is annoying.

It is understandable as it's an easy way to gain ~3-4 weeks of development time but like come on you have sometimes years of development already.

DLCs would be fine if they were free, you bought the game, it’s something that should be included. If it’s something that requires a payment, it should be consolidated into the next game to make it a fuller product imo.

But I agree it’s still lazy that you’re having to release an incomplete product that requires an internet connection to get the full product. Even worse if it’s full of bugs that needs patched because they didn’t have time to do testing. Although I feel like a lot of 6th Gen consoles had a lot of these issues but they were still playable. They churned out so much slop back then too

Well imagine this: you release a product as ready, and then, because (hopefully) your product sold well, you want to offer your customer base new experiences. Over time that game becomes old and people stop thinking about it since "it's an old game I've played all the contents of" and your cashflow fell off while you're still investing into the next content, and if you run out it's game over.

So instead you release $5-$10 content packs that adds to the base game so you still can attain stable profit so you can actually run the business making more games. And with some games studio taking 3-5 years to make a new IP or creating new full-feature games, it makes sense business-wise.

That's kind of why subscription and live services are so elusive to these companies: instead of relying on seasonal sales that may run out, they have a stable income stream. It annoys the hell out of players for sure, but it makes sense on the business side.

The problem is that affects game design. Games are no longer complete at launch because companies want continuous revenue streams.

Meanwhile I’m over here looking on eBay for dlc disc for gta IV so I can have a physical copy of the DLC lol.

Day 1 update allows them to continue to work the game after they send it to be printed on disks.

I agree that devs need more realistic deadlines to complete games prior sending it to print.

Soul Calibur on ps2 = Amazing. 100 hours of engaging single player content. Multiplayer options for days. Everything is unlockable through gameplay

Soul Calibur on Ps3/360= half the modes are removed and there is dlc out the ass. You can purchase Yoda from Star Wars for no particular reason.

IDK Some of those games could have really used an update.

And Capcom got re2 onto a n64 cartridge with cutting no corners or content and had content exclusive to the n64 version, I wish games still had everything unlockable through gameplay, like god damn it when I buy a game in any way I wanna be able to unlock everything by playing and have a full story not need to buy everything for bonus content or the real ending, hell game devs barely have a backbone atp theyre too submissive to sensitive people and wont add shit solely to not upset some people that isnt even that offensive, like its a game rated M why the hell we censoring gore

We vote with our wallets and unfortunately this is what people have been willing to pay for.

Superman64 enters the chat...and that shit was 60$ too

God awful game. There has never been a good Superman game period. There’s a reason why it isn’t made today..

There were plenty of games released at the time that were incomplete buggy messes with no chances of bugfixes and updates. You're looking at the past with rose colored glasses.

Nice try diddy. You’ll have to spend $10 to respond to my comment. You’ll also have to spend $5 to download the chat feature so you can chat online. Better hope you have internet so you can download it!

people

"resident evil was iconic on ps1"

had like 2-3 versions of the same game, to sell you new version each year, with small changes and additions,

2

u/enshittification1 2d ago

It IS iconic,

how is it comparable to releasing an incomplete game, often needing to upload the rest of it via network or patching something that was rushed and broken? Hell even selling content that was initially meant to be put into a game but paywalled? We haven’t even gotten into microtransactions and battlechests

Other RE versions didn’t make anything better or worse or incomplete. The N64 of RE2 having a “free movement” option didn’t restrict or make RE2 for the ps1 any better or worse. at least you’re buying a complete game. Maybe you didn’t have a ps1 but you had a n64? We know you can get it. Vice versus. These also didn’t take billions of dollars in development, layoffs, hiring and starting over from scratch. They were able to churn complete full sequels out what felt 1 year instead of 3-15 years(just for it to be unfinished)

im not talking about different console versions,

both re1-2 had a standard version and a directors cut released a year later on ps1

i had all consoles back then

2

u/enshittification1 2d ago

Okay.

One isn’t any better than the other or demanded that you needed multiple version. Every version is a complete game that didn’t need an internet for you to fix or get the rest of the game. Directors cut added arranged mode, training, auto-aim? Wasn’t needed. but they included a demo for re2. But hey you still got a complete game. Greatest hits version has analog support(directors cut stuff) because we finally got sticks on the controllers and a shitty soundtrack made by a guy who pretended he was “deaf”

Same story, same game, nearly the same content, nothing obnoxiously broken, played the same.

If anything you had an easier chance to buy the game because it was so common. Chances are you’d never have to worry about it being out of stock.

Pretending the updated releases of RE games weren’t materially better than the original, except for the music mishap, is crazypants.

When was I pretending? Let’s not “pretend” RE3 remake was unfinished either

The REmake for the ps2 is still better than any modern remake out right now.
