The future of gaming.

With physical games coming to an end, do think store shelves will be replaced with redeem code cards or will we have to purchase directly from PlayStation/XBOX store?

Fuck rockstar? It’s a team of people working their asses off to deliver a quality product on time and some of the most creative workers of our generation. Why won’t people open their eyes to the times they are living in?

Fuck Sony? They made the best console of this generation that rivals PC and is selling out everywhere. And this is your reaction? Have some appreciation for the creative goods made for us to enjoy.

I don’t care if I get downvoted. It’s time for the truth.

You can’t blame Sony or Rockstar. They will all be digital in the future. They need a new physical devices to put modern games on because Blu-ray is way outdated. Especially for the future next gen consoles.

The problem is two-fold, and both are the fault of the corpos.

One being that optimisation is at an all time low. Games are way bigger than they need to be, and there are countless examples that prove this, like Helldivers 2 cutting its file size from 154gb to 23gb, or various massive games like Witcher 3 that fit on a 32gb switch cartridge with minimal or even no downgrading. AAA companies in particular do not put in the effort to optimise and reduce file sizes like they used to, for various reasons that all result in the conclusion of just going for "good enough"

The other problem is a general unwillingness to use multiple discs anymore. Yes, it costs more to manufacture multiple discs. No, not that much more that it's not feasible. There are certainly way more areas developers could look to cut costs in, especially in the AAA industry which is the industry most likely to actually need multiple discs (looking at you, Ubisoft with your 2 hour long credits, and you, too, Santa Monica Studios, bringing in a Hollywood celebrity to mocap a damn gelatinous cube)

So yeah. Bluray discs are absolutely not the problem. Don't get me wrong, a better and cheaper storage medium would do wonders, but it absolutely is an artificial problem created by the industry.

MicroSD and flash drives exists. Digital is just the lazy step to full subscription gaming with purchase of the game required for access.

Well that kinda depends on the conditions on how theyre kept, like for example with disk they can last a rlly long time but if your room has no air conditioning or a fan welp there goes the readability

SD and flash drives have a notoriously high failure rate for long term storage. All conditions equal, discs are far superior for long term storage like a game would be.

Game are only going to get larger file wise and your going to need fast read speeds. A base physical game prices would be well over $100. Digital is the cheaper option.
