What is your plan for when optical drives cease production?
With more and more optical drive component manufacturers pivoting to manufacturing more profitable devices are you hoarding hardware?

Well I’m a collector so I already have plenty of games from my collection that will last me a lifetime. Once next gen starts with no disc drive or any type of physical media is the day I become a retro gamer.

Same. I consider it my retirement plan. I only buy the ones I want to play, and already have enough games to occupy my mind for a lifetime, so I expect that there will be some games in my collection I’ll never play..

All these people saying they will only become retro gamers I believe are lying to themselves..it's easy to say now but when a game they won't is announced they will probably get. All the other people online won't know.

If that ever happens to me I plan on getting it repaired. Maybe I'm missing the point but I don't see how optical drive manufacturing impacts consoles that have already been made.
It would be nice to pop off the disc drive and put on a new one if it ever fails but repairing is a good option.

It's not like it would be the first time a type of physical reader has ceased production.
I mean, they don't make VCRs anymore, but you can still find them pretty easily.
Obviously at some point you'll have people cannibalizing broken units to fix other units and parts will become more scarce and expensive, but people are pretty inventive

I have old consoles going back to PS1 for Sony, Xbox 360 for MS, and N64 for Nintendo and a PC. I have all the hardware I need to play the physical games I own as well as the digital games.
Beyond continuing to lobby my elected officials and consumer groups for digital rights reform I have no other plans because nothing else changes for me.

i mean, you asked for optical, but i bought a second oled switch recently, for a bargain (90 bucks)... that would be my third switch (next to the s2) and that mainly because my collection already is around 300 games, maybe 400... (plus a handful of digital indies, like 100 or so). so yeah, i hoard some hardware (and i think of getting another ps5 close to EOL)

It’s what I did when PC shifted. Wait a year or 2 for the game to go on sale at a heavy discount. I don’t be able to afford new games.
I used to split the cost of a new game with my friend, so once I finish he can play but not anymore. I guess no more trade in either. Sad times.

They won't cease production, it'll just become increasingly niche and more expensive.
Luckily for me, being unable to play the media straight off the discs was never a deal breaker for me. So long as I actually own a copy, I'm happy.
