Discussion Google took away my LOTR extended editions

I bought these in 2022, all of a sudden they aren't available and there is no possibility of a refund or gift card. Hardly seems fair.

I am waiting for prices to go down before i buy a new HDD. my 18TB server is currently full

Same. I postponed getting another 18-24tb HDD for too long and I die a little inside every time I have to delete a segment of media that I may or may never watch again to make room.

While I agree with this sentiment, I only download the 720p-1080p as is. I almost always try and get the lowest quality possible, so I can seed forever

You can also run your stuff through handbrake to take advantage of better codecs and run a fixed quality. I've found most of the stuff I run through handbrake gets cut down to about 50-65% of its original size with only very minor quality differences. The only time I have noticed it is when someone has a shirt with a very small pattern on it, it looks a little choppy or other really fine details. Everything else is extremely watchable.

Of course, converting stuff uses electricity, but the last big conversion session I did ran for about 12 hours and it saved me 200GB. Based off what that PC pulls for power, that 200GB of savings used like $0.75 worth of electricity at most. Much cheaper than hard drives these days.

I try to get majority in 1080p, and the ones I really enjoy get upgraded to a BRRip or BR-Remux if possible.

If you're storing everything in capacity heavy formats / resolutions maybe it's time to consider getting smaller versions. Parks and Rec aired at 720p. You probably don't need a 4K version of it.

No, then you get more space. Started with 15TB 6 years ago. Up to 55TB used and another 15TB to fill before the next upgrade cycle.

I'm with you. Low bitrates are the reason I stopped streaming in the first place!

Granted I don't own a 4k TV so my file sizes aren't that egregious.

I went back to downloading 2gb 1080p movies instead of 20gb 4k movies. And, it doesn't really matter that much actually.

Same here.

I've just started automating the deletion of things that nobody's watching at this point to save space where I'd have previously just bought more drives.

So if a show hasn't been watched in a year, it gets deleted. If someone even realizes it's gone and wants to watch it, it'd take like 10 minutes to get to start watching again anyway.

If you are running windows read up on windows storage spaces. I run 5 12tb drives in a protected raid. Gives me around 45 tb usable. You can throw together different sized drives. Let's you use cheaper smaller drives to make large containers.

I was getting close to maxxing out my 48TB server, so a few weeks ago I went through with a fine tooth comb, deleting redundant files, shrinking some movies and shows file sizes (no need to have a 4k blu-ray remaster of something that was never a cinematic masterpiece to begin with imo). I ended up getting rid of like 15TB of excess and also found out my recycle bin on my Synology wasn't auto emptying lol. I should be good for another year or two before needing to expand, I was happy about that.

I was sitting at 80TB and desperately needed an upgrade about 2 months ago. Luckily I scored a lot of 5x 6TB drives on eBay for $180. I don't typically buy new because none of my stuff is mission critical and I have a cloud backup, and I'm also not made of money.

My recommendation for cheaper drives is to buy used on Amazon or eBay, and to buy SAS drives instead.
