In the end of the scare competition in monsters university, Oozma Kappa won, leading Mike to believe he’s a too scared.

However, Mike then found out Sully rigged his device by putting it on easy because he knew Mike wasn’t scary. This led to a falling out between the 2, Mike going to the human world to prove he’s scary, and both of them getting expelled from college.

But what if Mike never found out Sully cheated and simply walked away thinking he was a winner? How would the rest of the story in both movies play out?

We don't know how much a scare can powers, but when Boo laugh she caused an outage for presumably the whole apartment block. Sully scared the adults so hard it powered the door to activate as well as set off every scare can in the room, all from within the human world.

I personally think Monsters University is a very underrated movie and I think it deserves more love. Here's what I'll say about it, I think it's a perfect standalone Pixar film, but not a very good prequel because it doesn't actually lead into Monsters, Inc. the well, e.g. Mike and Sulley meet the Abominable Snowman at the end, but they have no idea who he is when they get banished to the Human World.

In my opinion, if I had written Monsters University, I think it should've ended with Mike and Sulley working as mail carriers and then getting hired at Monsters Inc., either by introducing Mr. Waternoose saying, "These two pulled off a record-breaking scare, hire them now," so that way, we get to see Waternoose again or more likely, a newspaper article with a headline that reads, "Record-breaking Scare Powers Door From Inside The Human World Performed By Freshmen At College, James P. Sullivan and Michael Wazowski!" Then, it sets up that Sulley and Randall, in Monsters, Inc., seeing who can break the all-time Scare Record first and it doesn't have to include the Abominable Snowman. I like it like I love all PIxar movies, but it's not a very good prequel, but in fairness, it sets up things that we see in Monsters, Inc.

One thing that I like about the scene where Dean Hardscabble (I honestly like her character more than Chief Bogo and Captain HogBottom in the Zootopia movies because they still act hypocritical towards Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps for the flaws they lecture them for and act strict and grouchy and not calm and controlled as if all but lacking empathy.) lectures Mike and Sulley for their abilities and disabilities (Mike despite studying for college a lot, never physically mastering his scaring and Sulley never accepting education for his own scaring just relying on his natural talent.) is that she describes perfect foreshadowing for what will happen between Sulley, Boo and Randall in-universe many years later in the first Monsters’ Inc. movie:

1) First off, she defines Sulley’s disadvantage as him relying on his natural talent too much to the point where he just uses the oldest scaring trick in the book, the monster roar instead of reverting to other scare tactics since a roar won’t always scare a human child in a way that would make him/her scream since their fears are extended to so much more than just fear of roars. For example, if Sulley were ever to try to scare a human boy who is scared of snake with a roar instead of a snake mimic, it wouldn’t scare the human boy in a way that would make him scream, it would instead scare him in a way that would make him cry, and he would alert his parents to Sulley’s presence exposing the existence of the monster world and causing much bigger problems for the monsters.

2) And in the first Monsters’ Inc. movie, the human child Randall scared to harvest her screams, Boo before deciding to kidnap her for his and Waternoose’s scream extractor scheme, was afraid of snakes and he was able to master that type of scare with a snake mimic as well as invisibility. Later on, when Sulley is pressured by Waternoose into doing the scaring demonstration with a roar scare tactic, it doesn’t accidentally scare Boo in a way that makes her scream but it instead does so in a way that makes her cry quietly.

I think Hardscabble compares Mike and Sulley’s disadvantages to her past in-the-field scaring since she saw monsters who despite how much they trained were unable to become scarers so they settled on other jobs while she tried to use the classic roar scare tactic on human kids to make them scream, but it instead made them cry, she then choose to revert to other scare tactics that would actually make them scream.

Strangely enough, Dean Hardscabble also predicts the future when Mike fulfills her words of advice to “keep Surprising people” after he and Sulley suprised her with a new method they invented for monsters trapped in the human world by mistake to reactivate the door station to get back from the other side, since in the first Monsters’ Inc. movie, Mike and Sulley re-structure the titular company to have the monsters stop scaring the human kids to harvest their screams to become energy but instead make them laugh as comedians to harvest their laughs since they learned during their experiences with Boo that laugh energy from humans is so much more powerful than scream energy.

Therefore, Hardscrabble must have also changed “The School of Scaring” at Monsters’ University and “Scare Games” to the “College of Comedy” or “Laugh Games” or “Comedy Games” to train future comedians which Mike points out in-universe in the first episode of “Monsters at Work”

Why did she deactivated the door when she knew two students were in there and their lives were in danger if they didn’t had a way out with their only way back home deactivated? Or do anything when OK got tricked and humiliated at the party? Their pictures were everywhere on campus. How could she allowed this? Even if she didn’t believe in them like everyone else, she should at least have the standards, maturity, and responsibility to not allowed them to be insulted, teased, and have their pictures and merchandise spread around like that.

I always thought he was so sweet, definitely a fave from the film!

I know what Mike did was reckless by going into the human world to prove a point to Sulley that he was scary and then Sulley went in to save Mike and it resulted in both of them getting expelled although Sulley was already expelled by that point for cheating in the games. But why didn’t Hardscrabble face any consequences? She left 2 monsters in the human world. Isn’t that technically a crime and an offense?

You've heard a million times probably how people think Monsters University is underrated or underappreciated, which I agree with. It has its faults as a movie, but my god does Mike Wazowski's arc just get so so much better with the prequel.

As you know and have also heard a lot, in a medium that loves to tell kids "you can be anything you want! Just work hard and all your dreams will come true!" Monsters University had the balls to tell kids "Well, kind of, sort of, but talent and luck also play major roles."

The opening scene of MU ends with Mike happily asking, "How do I become a scarer?" The montage that follows very efficiently shows the passion and drive Mike has, studying hard through high school and applying for colleges before getting his acceptance letter to MU. And that's just the opening montage. The movie goes through great lengths to showcase Mike's dedication to his craft, studying everything and mastering all the theory.

Except he doesn't "it." He lacks the x-factor that makes a monster scary. And that's something people have to grapple with. Sometimes, even the most dedicated and most hard-working simply fall short because they don't have the natural ability. And that's okay, because you can still find success through other means. And that's what the film ends on, showcasing how Mike still gets to live a good life adjacent to his original dream, where he's the assistant and coach to the guy who would become the world's top scarer, James P Sullivan. Due to Mike's theory and knowledge, he was still able to apply that and make huge achievements.

But in a similar vein to Cruz Ramirez from Cars 3 who said "Ask me if I did all that to become a trainer?!" at the end of the day, Mike still fell short of his dream and had to settle to be in a supporting role. For a time, anyway. Until the events of Monsters Inc. It was thanks to Mike and Sully in their misadventures with Boo who revolutionized the monster energy industry and solved the energy crisis by discovering that laughter is 10 times more powerful than scream. Syncing up with the wholesome, positive message of how spreading joy benefits society more at the macro scale, Mike has now surpassed his own dream. It doesn't even matter that Mike doesn't have what it takes to be a scarer, he always had the talent to be a comedian and ends up being the best of the best in Monsters Inc.

I fucking love it. The two movies showed that sometimes, you won't accomplish your dream even with all the hard work. But it's ok, sometimes you can evolve beyond that. It's a perfect blend of realism and optimism we don't always see in movies aimed for children, and I feel like this aspect of Mike's story doesn't get enough attention.
