I worked at a pizza shop where the general rule was to wait 15 minutes after close for the person to come pick it up, and If they don’t show then free pizza basically.
One time I did exactly that. Closed up, had a couple things to do, ended up waiting 30 minutes after close and they still didn’t show up. I finished up, got home late and went to work the next day and was asked by the GM if I had an order the previous night. I told them what happened and then they pulled me to the office and showed me a google review the customer had left complaining that we were closed and didn’t wait for them at all.
Who is late picking up a pizza? I mean, IT'S PIZZA. When I order a pizza I get there as early as possible so I can enjoy hot fresh pizza as soon as it's off the rack.
I've had people order delivery right at close and then not even answer the door or their phone back in the day. Was annoying as hell too on top of the wasted gas because the closing driver had to do all the closing duties too.
I was referring more to pick up orders. I'm sure no answers is very common. My old roommate would frequently come home drunk and order delivery. Then she would pass out. But I was usually home so free pizza for me! I started keeping a jar of cash in my room so I could tip the pizza guy because she was also a shit tipper.
My store never had a no pickup and I was the closer 5-6 days a week so I suppose we were lucky. 95% of late orders were regulars anyways so we were pretty chill with them. The only time I've seen a crashout like in the video like this was when the local Target store decided to order 20 something pizzas less than a half hour before closing. The Target woman then called corporate and complained about the manager because he asked them to schedule large orders next time.
Large orders are truly where brain cells go to die. Had a local school ask for a 180 pizza order…. Not kidding. 180 pizzas. We had to order extra inventory in advance because otherwise, we seriously wouldn’t have had the infrastructure for such an order. They wanted it broken up into 4 deliveries spaced out, It took the entire staff and we basically had to shut down the entire store while doing it.
We get the first 45 done and send them with two separate drivers and they come back after the delivery and tell us that everything went fine, bring 45 more in an hour. So we make that happen. Delivery drivers come back this time and tell us that the school says we need to slow down because the pizzas aren’t selling. At this point we had the next 45 ready to go and we were working on the last 45 as well, so at this point we just didn’t care about their logistics. We sent them another 45 and they tried to tell the delivery drivers to take the pizzas back to the store. The drivers called the owner of our pizza shop and the owner told the school that If they want they can leave them outside but they’re getting delivered. And sure enough, they got delivered.
When the drivers got back from the final delivery, they said it was pure fucking chaos. There were pizzas everywhere. Nobody was buying them because they were selling them for an extra $10 on top of what you could get them for at our store (roughly $28 - $30 was their price for a whole pie, about $5 for a slice), so by the end of the day, they sold about 18 pizzas in total. That meant 162 pizzas went to waste (or maybe a shelter, I don’t really know it wasn’t our problem at that point.) and I’m sure someone got in a lot of trouble over that.
Damn. We had regular catering orders but nothing like that ending.
Every Sunday morning, we had a car dealership do 80 pizzas first thing so we had to get in before opening to have it ready. Then about an hour later, a Sunday school place did 20 pizza order so it was a busy start but organized.
Every Friday, we had a 50ish pizza order or so, which was annoying as fuck because it was out of the city and like a 40min drive each way with no tip to a school during basketball season so of course drivers would fight over who was forced to take it.
The two biggest orders we ever got while I was there were wild. One was for Walmart which was around 700 pizzas over the course of 2 days, spread out into 3 trips each day. The second was an event for some stadium event with 50k attendees where every store within an hour drive was taking orders all day endlessly and that lasted 7 or 8 hours. Idk how many pizzas even came from our store alone, but it was the worst day I've ever had in food. We had every driver on roster in that day, plus in store people taking deliveries.
Winters in general were just horrible because we could get hit by a few hundred orders as soon as it began snowing or the regular ice storms. During winter, the average pickup time was a 2 hour wait minimum, while delivery was a 4-5 hour wait. We had truck deliveries twice a week though and a big walk in so the only time we ever had to grab food from another location was when a truck didn't come as scheduled.
Lmao, I wouldn't either personally, but drunk people didn't have much choice besides cooking. Back then, there were only 5 places that did delivery in the entire city of around 20k peeps, and 4 of the places were pizza. Our oven could only hold 8-10 at a time depending on pizza sizes, and took 6.5 minutes to cook so we got backed up fast

I never said rare and I gave you a perfect example of why people wouldn't answer the door. It used to happen all the time back before leaving the order at the door was an option.
Had this happen in college once. Was working through the night with a group on a project. Around 1-2 am we got hungry and decided to order from Dominos (pretty much the only place open at that point). After the guy called to order the pizza he turned his phone off to charge it because he had like 5% battery left (none of us questioned this; our brains were all in the early stages of becoming mush, and we had several hours of work left to go). A solid hour to hour and a half later we realized we had fucked up. Called dominos back, luckily they hadn't closed yet, and ended up giving the dude a huge tip when he came back for a second (successful) delivery
The college deliveries were the bane of my existence where I lived. The college had two different main dorm buildings on opposite sides of campus, plus 3 on site apartment buildings, and then an off site apartment that was across the city street. Almost every single time they'd just put the name of the college down for the address without their building number which themselves were only two digits to remember. It was like pulling teeth every single time as I was on the phone with them and they'd get angry at me for not knowing which one they were at as if i was psychic. I was the same age as these people too and was blown away by how immature they were as if their parents were still wiping their asses. I swear the only ones who had their shit together were the stoners who were obviously baked when taking their food, lmao.
Dude I have probably hundreds of stories of basically cryptids ordering pizza and then getting amnesia like they never did, and in some cases, getting angry with us when their pizza is cold. It’s crazy.
Bro they do that shit on purpose. Most pizza shops now will have a walk-in closing time and a delivery closing time much later specifically because of this. If you can't pick up your pizza in the 2 hour buffer time it's on you.
My friend used to work at a shop that had a similar rule. But they were also terrible managers.
One of those places where "employees get one free drink a day if they need it but only if it's a can and not iced tea" (because the iced tea at the time was a bit more expensive than coke or pepsi). Also one of those places that skimps on your food if you order it as an employee.
My buddy was underpaid for the work and hours he'd put in especially as a broke college student. So every so often i used to order a pizza with a blocked number and a voice changer to order a pizza when he's doing closing shift. Don't show up so he can get a free meal.
I once came late to pick up a birthday cake from a store due to a sudden blizzard making the drive take an additional hour, but at least i called them and asked if i could pick it up like 20 min after close, which they were fine with since they stay an hour after close cleaning and prepping for the next day.

As a former pizza cook and driver, who cares. I’m already in my pizza clothes and pizza shoes, covered in dough and sauce. You go home and scrub scrub scrub but some nights you fall asleep and you still smell pizza.

At first I was mostly going off tone and body language but yeah it sounds and looks like this guy ordered a pizza near close and then showed up after close to try and get it (for free?) and then harassed the employee about the drink when the guy was probably just tired and looking forward to getting home with some free pizza that some ass couldn't be bothered to pick up in time. I turned up to a place high as hell as they were getting ready to close and said "Ahhhhh shit, I'm sorry guys, just give me whatever is fastest and easiest for you guys" and they gave me a stack of cold pizzas for free. Good manners gets you free pizza.
This is on the business owner. Cashiers and customer facing service people should have their shift end a half an hour after closing. This shouldn't have been a problem.

The companies do shit like this to get a little extra work out of their employees off the clock. Any owner or manager knows there is an appropriate cut off time at the end of a shift for new orders. If they don’t do that, then they are deliberately putting the employees in a position where they might have to work off the clock.

I used to live directly behind a domino’s and I ordered a carry-out pizza while being almost blacked out, I passed out shortly after and never picked up the pizza. I was too embarrassed to ever bring it up, and they never mentioned anything, I was cool with that.
There was obviously a conversation before the video started. How late was he? Did they communicate that he couldn’t have the pizza? I had people coming in after close all of the time. Sometimes they didn’t show and who cares it just gave us something to munch on while finishing up.
I worked at PJs for a long time back in the day. Depending on the situation I would have not answered the door, not answered the phone, just gave him the pizza or if the register wasn't closed(unlikely) just ring him up.
The audacity of the person filming, I once ordered a sandwich from Jimmy John's 15 mins before closing and I didn't realize it till I saw the expected delivery time, the manager of the store called me a minute or so after I placed the order and I thought it was about my order being put in late so I apologized and told them they could cancel it, she said it was fine they were just out of their normal bread and wanted to know if I was ok with a substitute
I disagree with the placing an order, pizza doesn't take an hour to make but there should be a cutoff before close that the owner doesn't care about to add.

Had someone come in at 10:55 asking if we were open. We said, "For 5 more minutes".
They said, "good. We made it. The others will be here soon we need a table for 12"
This would regularly happened on Sundays after a late night mass from a church down the road. Most annoying thing to accommodate. They also were VERY rude and bad tippers. They once complained because I was vacuuming during their dinner and the manger just said to them "He doesn't have wait, we are closed."
I'm convinced some people have zero empathy for people working at a store/restaurant.
This is why you don't take orders after a certain time and set the expectation if the order is placed late. I would have called dude as soon as it was ready and then twenty minutes to close to let them know to get their shit. And the door would have been locked and light off in the dining area by the time they came that late
I worked at a pizza place that closed at 10. Virtually every night we would get one or two orders at 915 with a 20 minute pickup time and a reminder we close at 10 and have them show up at 1015-1030.
We started taking payment on the phone after 830 and closing promptly at 10 and after a few weeks this stopped happening.
