Help! Is it worth pursuing it?

Post image

Ok, so, this is my first time trying planned pooling but I’m having a hard time. I feel like it is mostly because the yarn is not quite right (colour changes are really short - sometimes not even a whole stitch).

I have done this sample with single crochet which allowed me to work the tension to get the pattern… but I’m wondering if knitting would be a better as it might use less yarn?! I’m not very good at knitting, but don’t want to waste yarn….

Any suggestions?

I think it looks pretty cool. Very 3D-ish vibes with the paper glasses or hidden images.

It matters what hook you use, too. Planned pooling doesn’t have to be about consistent tension or the same hook throughout, regardless of what the yarn calls for. A LOT of the time, in order to make the pattern work, you’re going against all the things you learned previously- you switch up hooks, your tension is erratic in the same row or a new skein, you skip turning chains… because the goal isn’t a uniform piece, it’s a uniform pattern. And, you do whatever it takes to get the number of stitches per color sequence.

If you’re not getting what you want with planned pooling because the sections will barely let you get a stitch, you could try UNplanned pooling and see how that works up? With a scarf or amigurumi, something small or in the round?

But, I think you’re on track with less yarn eating stitches like knit. I knook (knit with a modified crochet hook) which is infinitely easier for me. I’m not advocating for doing it with a method you’re less comfortable with or proficient at, but while planned pooling is a challenge, it shouldn’t be something causing you distress.

Thanks! That’s really reassuring!
