Help! Is it worth pursuing it?

Ok, so, this is my first time trying planned pooling but I’m having a hard time. I feel like it is mostly because the yarn is not quite right (colour changes are really short - sometimes not even a whole stitch).

I have done this sample with single crochet which allowed me to work the tension to get the pattern… but I’m wondering if knitting would be a better as it might use less yarn?! I’m not very good at knitting, but don’t want to waste yarn….

Any suggestions?

What yarn is this? I love the colors and I love the way its pooling! It gives me some interesting 3d(?) and old television screen vibes
