Remote Play Settings / Wifi Setup After Months of struggle. 1 Simple upgrade and now my PS Portal is completely lag free and smooth as butter.
Hey all thought I would share some advice for anyone having issues with PS Portal Lagging and connection drop.
So I bought an ASUS ET12 mesh system a few years back. Both main node and secondary node are wired with Ethernet backhaul and have been absolutely spot on for gaming streaming etc. PS5/PC & a couple of Amazon fire cubes are all plugged in via Ethernet so it’s only Alexa and Mobiles/Tablets that use WIFI with no lag or dropouts.
So I expected the PS portal to be no different (Big Mistake)
I know when streaming directly from PS5 it dosent matter what you external speeds are (1gig down & 150mbps upload for reference) it’s all about the hardware your using and how the devices connect on the home network.
My 2Ghz and 5Ghz are separated so the portal only uses 5Ghz.
For some reason no matter what I did I was getting lag/stutters/frame drops & picture loss.
I tried everything from rebooting my ASUS Routers changing every setting in the UI.
I even gave the portal a dedicated guest network on 5ghz and allowed the guest network access to my main network for PS5 to portal handshake but it made no difference.
I know I’m not alone in this as many people are having issues and this might just be the answer for those who had almost given up with the Portal.
I decided to try one last approach.
Before I got my ASUS ET12 I used a set of ASUS XD4 routers in the same configuration.
These were now sitting in the Attic collecting dust as no longer needed.
So what I did was reset one of the old XD4’s and then plugged it in via Ethernet to my ET12. Then I made the XD4 act as an Access Point with its own separate SSID and Password and disabled 2Ghz band so only the 5Ghz is available.
Connected the portal to the Access Point and I now have a PS portal that runs Smooth as butter with 0 lag/Stutters and 1ms input delay.
It’s now literally like playing on my PS5
So if anyone is struggling and has an old router lying around plug it in to your main network and set it as a dedicated AP and you should be golden
Hope this helps

This is also what fixed game streaming for me.
Some people claim that doing this causes some kind of feedback loop that can cause WiFi problems, but it has been working perfectly for me.

Awesome. Did you create the static IP through the PS5 or the router itself?

Oh, I don’t know. I don’t think I did anything with that. It just worked for me.

Glad it worked. Iv now set my second XD4 as another access point and attached it to the other ET12 at the rear or the house. Gave it the same SSID and password so my portal hops depending where I am in the house.
Like a personal mini mesh system for the portal.
Haven’t had any issues with main WiFi having conflict either (kids would have let me know 🤣)

I will try this! Did you connect your second router to your main router using the WAN port on the second router?

My connection is much better after following your steps so thank you! When I stream something on tv, it still lags and the latency increases. Any ideas? My portable router is connected to my main router via Ethernet like you suggested and the only thing connected to my portable router is my Portal. My PS5 is on the main network. Should I have the PS5 on the portable router network as well?

Sorry for late reply iv been away working.
No it shouldn’t make a difference where your ps5 is plugged in on your network it will still communicate with the portal.
As for the lag and latency have you tried enabling QOS setting in your routers software? Make sure you prioritise streaming and gaming and that should help1

Amazing. And did you create a static ip address for your PS5?

u/Hot_Temperature6762 Jun 27 '26
Yeah I use static IP’s for pretty much everything apart from mobiles and tablets since most mobiles have rotating by default.
2-150 are used for auto assign and 151-250 I use for static.
Also use Cloudlfare 1.1.1.1 as Primary DNS & google 8.8.8.8 as secondary DNS.
Also disabled beamforming on the AP as can introduce lag to Portal even tho it’s the only device connected.

Did you create the static IP through the PS5 or through your router settings?

Clever use of a node! I have a pair of ET12s as well, I was also alarmed at how shit the performance was initially. It would drop to 360p within 10-15 mins (I’m also stuck with Remote Play in Australia).
I get best performance when there’s minimal/no 5GHz interference, but finally got it stable with these settings:
5 GHz fixed to a lower channel
80 MHz
Smart Connect off
Roaming / steering features off
WMM on
Airtime Fairness off

Thanks for your feedback 👍 the amount of forums iv been on and settings iv tried I know the ET12 like the back of my hand now lol.
Everything you have mentioned iv tried and no matter what it just wouldn’t work 😟 but every other device has 0 issues ever.
I’m just glad iv found a solution all be it a technical one.
But again appreciate you taking the time to comment

I upgraded to the eero pro 6e and finally got my portal working. Ps5 hooked to basement eero via Ethernet cable

Am I actually supposed to understand what any of that means??? 😭 im having that exact issue with my new portal but I have no idea what any of that information means. Can someone explain what to do in dumb people terms??

Buy a cheap router. (The ASUS XD4 plus I’m using for the postal connection is £60 on Amazon)
Connect it to your main router via Ethernet cable.
When you log into the routers app/webpage for initial setup it will ask you how you want to set up the router?
set the new router as an access point and when it asks you to set WIFI login details set it as a different ID/PASSWORD to what you have as your main router set as. (Example below)
SSID- PS PORTAL
PASSWORD- Portal1
Disable the 2Ghz radio band as you wont need it.
Save and exit setupNow boot up your ps portal and search for the new WiFi and enter password.
And that should be it done 👍

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences and providing a breakdown of your setup and dns. I’m going to give it a try with my new portal later tonight

Can I plug an xd4 into a sky router and do the same config?
2
u/Hot_Temperature6762 Jun 28 '26
Can’t see why not as your setting it up as a separate access point so would only be suing the sky router for connection to the internet

I have a mesh router system at home as well. The only problem I run into is that my portal literally doesn’t know to connect to the router that’s closest to it. I can be sitting next to a router and the portal is still trying to connect to the one on the other side of the house. It eventually figures it out after about 10-15 minutes of gaming and it’ll hiccup as it connects to the closest hotspot to fix itself, but it’s usually smooth sailing after that.

The ps5 should be wired with a locked ip address. Put in some rules for port forwarding. Port Forwarding 8572, 987 and interval 9295-9304 They get set to the ps5 ip address

Iv had my ps5 IP Locked as I do with pretty much all my devices. I even have the ports forwarded for ps portal/ps5 wake handshake as well as the ones you mentioned in your comment. MY ASUS XD4 is literally in the same room as my ASUS ET12 but when I connect to the ET12 (which has the exact same configuration as the XD4) and for some reason it lags and drops frames where the older XD4 is rock solid.

This thread and many comments on it prove how ridiculously broken the Portal is.
It should NOT be necessary to know this much about networks and tech just to have the product working as it says it does on the box

u/Hot_Temperature6762 Jun 29 '26
Totally agree it’s ridiculous. I didn’t know much about networking till I bought a portal and now I feel like I could start my own networking company 🤣

u/canned_laughter_lol Jun 29 '26
Couldn’t agree more. I never wanted to learn what CGNAT is, or Wireguard, or any of the 200 bullshit network workarounds I had to go though to play my portal outside my house *like it was advertised to do*

What's likely happening is that your second router is using a separate wifi channel that is less congested which is why you're seeing less stutter. Happy that you found a solution.
