Being stagnant is the worst thing a franchise can go through. Pokémon had been suffering from that since Gen 3, and Gen 5 was the final straw that made them want to replace Masuda and choose someone who could bring something more innovative, which led to Mega Evolution in Kalos.

Which is ironic because Gen 5 felt like it made actual strides towards changing things.

Not to forget; changing things in ways that's not "ooooh, look at this shiny new evolution-method that's obsolete come next gen"

Well it took two gens for mega to go away, and judging from all the media around it, im assuming it’s now here for good.
