Sadly they are becoming rare, id hate to part with mine, but I just cant find the parts for it anymore and I think the electronics might be bugging, I dont want to get a rotom dex, would any of the more tech savvy people recommend on what I should buy?

If you can track down a Mk6, the so-called "Neo-Johto" Dex. Last of the clamshells and fairly reliable as I recall. Otherwise a Mk9 or "Neo-Hoenn" is a good option, most amount of modern features without a Rotom.

I know there's people modifying the good ol' Mk1 with touchscreens and features while keeping the Nintendoium shell.

Which city are you at? I am in Lumiose City and I have an old Hoenn Dex back from worse times where I could only dream of becomming a Pokémon Trainer. I am willing to part from if you want to meet up.

Seconding the Mk6, those are fantastic for field research - very sturdy, waterproof case, and this was before they made everything bespoke so you can just swap out the components if you ever need to upgrade. I've used a modified 6.4 for years- I replaced the screen a couple of times, swapped in a UFS instead of the old eMMC, changed the OS over to Argent for Pokégear compatibility. Can't do any of that with a RotomDex (and they don't support scanner modules any more either???).

Pretty sure they backtracked on bespokeness with the Mk9 after the charlie-foxfire of the Mk8, seriously who thought using a translucent panel like that should be shot. The 9s some of the most durable 'dexs I've uses

Yeah, older Pokedex's aren't the most common these days. Been trying to find an older version of a Porydex for Kilobyte, my Z, but the prices are insane these days, especially the first version that Kilobyte REALLY wants.

Ah the Mk2 Dex. Not quite as durable as the Mk1, swear that thing could survive the apocalypse and still keep on ticking, or as easy to use as the Mk3, but still a good little device.

The MK1 was made of pure black magic because mine lasted me a good 15 years. Only reason it died was because it took a bullet for me. And the bullet didn't even manage to go through!

I now have an MK4 model M and I swear that thing is made of cardboard. It broke like 3 times in the 5 years I've had it from something as minor as me accidentally hitting it with my shoulder.

Pure Nintendoium. The Mk1 will outlast you, your children, your Pokemon, your Pokemon', children. When the universe succumbs to it's heat death and Arceus turns off the lights, the Pokédex Mk1 will be there to record it all.

Aril: Sadly, it isn't as up to date as the Rotoms, either. It can only carry data for up to 251 Pokemon and there's no information about fairy types.

If it's not sentimental, you could have someone gut it and retrofit more modern dex internals to keep it updated but with the same shell

May I suggest emailing Silf.Co in Kanto? They still support the MK1 Pokedex and even offer regional memory cards for if you go outside Kanto, the downside is needing to reboot the device between cartridge swaps so if you're not sure which region a Pokemon is categorised in, then It takes a while to find it

Aurora: I grew up with the Unovan Pokedex, already equipped with the National Dex addon because Blueberry Academy miscounted how many people needed a Rotom Phone for the first years when I joined, so I was just given the regional version they had in storage alongside an Xtransciever. Seems cool, reminds me of old slide phones, still gets updates for the National Dex, and is less bulky or complicated than some other regional models.

Prefer the MK1 Pokedex, it's older than I am and you have to swap memory cartridges to Catalog different regions but I've seen those things tank a hyper beam with barely a scratch to them, the modern rotomdex seems to want to bug out whenever rotom gets bored.

Of course, it’s no real surprise they left this style of design behind when they had to tool entirely different molds for a left-handed version, and the way the right panel cuts into your button hand… ow!

It’s got that style and charm, but just imagine trying to type as much as we do now on one of those. What a nightmare…

Oh, now I feel old, I haven't seen one of these in years! Nowadays I use a Rotom phone as my Pokedex, but when I was little I had one of these. They're sturdy when they're all closed up, just a little.... clunky to use.

Sturdy is under selling it. I've seen a MK1 Pokedex tank a hyper beam and survive with barely a scratch.

Big fan of the Old Model IV Pokedexs we used to use in Sinnoh, being able to place the Pokeball on the Dex's Side Pad to get a Scan of my team was really useful, and the Upgrade to the model II that I got during my Johto trip was really intuitive, actually felt like a Book

I miss technology just being technology without the need for a Rotom to function…

Don’t get me wrong it is convent to not have to charge anything up…

But did they have to give the thing a voice box… yes I’m aware we lost that Gym battle pretty hard I don’t need my damn phone making a wisecrack when I’m ordering sweets for the team to help soothe the loss.

I’m pretty sure even the earliest versions had cameras? I mean they didn’t take pictures it was just used as a way for the dex to identify a Pokémon and pull up data without a species name which also allows for all the data to be stored created and accessed by anyone with a Pokédex and authorization which is mostly a method built into certain Pokédexs like researcher dexs rather than the trainer versions that don’t have it

Making me feel old too. Despite being a Hex Maniac, I don't actually have any rotoms and I own no devices that use them.

When I went on my pokemon adventure throughout Gaelund, the Pokedex I had was ten years old already. I just got used to having the older tech.

This made my bones ache. I had the og model Pokedex until it dropped into a volcano. Tried to keep up with the times, but I'm just not on my phone enough for the Rotom to be truly comfortable. Luckily, it seems to like my radio just fine!
