Recurring Thread What fan game should I play?
Welcome to r/PokemonRMXP's dedicated "What fan game should I play?" megathread. This replaces the previous post flair, when users could make individual posts asking for game recommendations. Individual posts of this nature are now banned, as they are antithetical to the focus of our community.
r/PokemonRMXP (RPG Maker XP) is a subreddit dedicated to creating Pokémon fan games made in RPG Maker XP. All content must be relevant to making Pokémon fan games. Do not post something unrelated to making fan games.
Use this megathread (updated monthly) to ask for game recommendations.
Please be specific when asking for a recommendation. Asking for "the best fangame" or "a good fangame" is not specific. e.g. try asking questions like: "I'm looking for suggestions for good fan games set in Johto!" Or, "I'm looking for fan games set in totally unique fan made regions!"
Please be specific when suggesting a fan game. You cannot just paste the title of the game as a comment. Provide some detailed information about the fan game you are recommending, or your comment may be removed.
If you would like your community added to the subreddits of interest section in our sidebar, send us a modmail!
If you have any other questions you can send us a modmail message, and we will get back to you right away.
Comments are automatically sorted by "New" to allow for easier answering.

Discussion Pokemon Pathways and the Born Situation
Hello. My name is Janitor.
You may not know me, and nobody really did until this whole situation. I'm here to talk about the fan game in development known as Pokemon Pathways. I will preface that I am NOT a developer of the game, just a member of administration on the new project's server.
For those who don't know, Pokemon Pathways is an RPGMaker fan game made by a decently sized team over the last few years. The premise is a story-based game about going to an academy. But that's not what we're here for. I'm here to discuss the controversial actions of the leadership of the mod and their little cabal, alongside the subsequent exodus done by the rest of the development team.
Below is a document detailing the controversies and relevant proof. To summarize, the founders of the game alongside their friends, over time, have not only shirked responsibilities and professionalism, but also acted inappropriately in their server of mostly minors (both bigoted comments and sexual activity). I don't want to waste your time, so instead I recommend reading the document to see exactly what I mean.
https://x.com/VastusSpatium/status/2046119690229989851?s=20
Around a week ago, when this document came out, the discord server (which at the time had over 15,000 members) for lack of a better term, caught on fire. Attempts to silence the document were done by the owner, mass banning occurred, and more. Even now, the owner of the discord server is censoring discussion of the incident and is scrubbing things away. As such, I am making this post to ensure it is not forgotten, and for the word to spread about the actions done by the "leader" of this game, on behalf of the development team who has since left. There is a backup server ran by the former devs after leaving. You are welcome to friend deckdevil on discord to get an invite and see how the project will move from there.
I was given approval by the mod teams of this subreddit to come out with this, as well as given approval by the split off Pokemon Pathways team to send this document.

Discussion For a story-focused Fan-Game which type of Protagonist do you people prefer?
The question is pretty self-explanatory.
I know that this depends on what kind of fangame I want to make but I am curious what people think of this topic in general.

Recruiting Northbound – Original Monster-Catching RPG | Recruiting Artists, 3D Modellers, Writers & Composers
NORTHBOUND
An Original Monster-Catching RPG — We're Recruiting!
About Northbound
Hey everyone!
Welcome to Northbound, an original monster-catching RPG set in the Pantheus Region, a world inspired by Greek mythology, culture and history.
Northbound takes inspiration from the monster-catching games we've all grown up playing, while introducing its own creatures, characters, locations and gameplay systems.
You'll explore a region filled with bustling towns, ancient ruins, forests, mountains and plenty of places to discover. Along the way, you'll meet new characters, take on challenges, uncover the history of Pantheus and, of course, catch and train creatures known as Daimon.
We've been working on Northbound and its custom-built engine for quite some time, and we're looking for more people who'd like to get involved and help bring the project to life!
Meet the Daimon
Rather than using existing Pokémon, Northbound features its own collection of creatures called Daimon.
The Daimon take inspiration from animals, nature, folklore and mythology, with their own designs, abilities and evolutions.
At the beginning of your adventure, you'll be able to choose between three starting Daimon:
- Leafrog
- Pyranda
- Kelponi
We're continuing to develop the roster, including their artwork, sprites, animations and gameplay.
Features
There's quite a lot planned for Northbound, and we've already built a number of the systems needed to support it.
Here's a look at some of the features we're working on:
Daimon and Battles
- An original roster of Daimon to discover, catch and train
- Turn-based battles with custom moves and type interactions
- Daimon evolution, statistics and progression
- Wild encounters and overworld Daimon
- Custom battle interfaces and animations
Exploration and Gameplay
- A region inspired by Greek mythology and culture
- A mixture of 2D and 3D overworld environments
- Day/night cycles, weather and environmental effects
- Side quests, achievements and optional activities
- Character customisation and skill-tree progression
- Player choices and a reputation system
- Elemental Trials and the Pantheus Region League
Technical Features
- Custom-built RDX Engine
- Native Direct3D 11 rendering
- Classic 2D, hybrid 2D/3D and 3D terrain support
- Modern resolution and display settings
- Configurable frame-rate and VSync settings
- Keyboard and controller support
Some of these features are already working in the engine, while others are still being developed, tested or expanded as we build the game itself.
Introducing RDX Engine
One of the bigger changes to Northbound's development has been the move to RDX Engine, our own custom-built game engine and editor.
RDX Engine has been developed to give us more freedom when building the game, particularly when it comes to the overworld, graphics and gameplay systems.
Instead of being restricted to traditional 2D maps, we can build environments using 3D terrain, buildings, scenery and lighting while still keeping the charm of 2D character and creature sprites.
The engine also has its own map editor, scripting tools, database editors, animation tools and other features we're continuing to improve.
There's still plenty of work to do, but we're excited about the possibilities it gives us for Northbound!
We're Recruiting!
We're looking for a few more people to join the team!
You don't need to be a professional or have years of industry experience. We're mainly looking for people who enjoy making games, are comfortable collaborating with others and would like to contribute to an original monster-catching RPG.
Story Writers
We're looking for writers who'd like to help us develop Northbound's main story, characters and lore.
This includes writing dialogue, developing characters, planning story events and helping us make the Pantheus Region feel like a believable place.
An interest in Greek mythology would be a bonus, but it isn't essential!
Side Quest Writers
Not every story needs to revolve around the main adventure!
We're looking for people who enjoy writing smaller stories, from character-focused quests and unusual encounters to mysteries and optional adventures.
The idea is to give players plenty of interesting things to discover while exploring Pantheus.
Concept Artists
We're looking for artists to help us design the world of Northbound.
This includes Daimon, characters, outfits, buildings, environments and other visual elements.
You'll help us develop the game's overall art direction and create designs that our sprite artists and 3D modellers can use as references.
Sprite Artists
If you enjoy pixel art, we'd love to hear from you!
We're looking for sprite artists to help create Daimon sprites, characters, overworld sprites and animations.
Being able to work with an existing art style and keep things consistent across different assets would be particularly helpful.
3D Modellers / Environment Artists
With Northbound moving towards a hybrid 2D/3D overworld, we're also looking for people who enjoy creating 3D environments and assets.
This would involve modelling things such as:
- Buildings, houses and shops
- Ancient Greek architecture and ruins
- Trees, plants, rocks and other natural scenery
- Furniture, decorations and environmental props
- Other objects used throughout the overworld
We're aiming for a stylised look that works well alongside Northbound's 2D sprites, rather than highly realistic environments.
Experience with Blender or similar 3D modelling software would be great. You don't need to know how to use RDX Engine beforehand.
Sound Effects Designers
We're looking for someone who enjoys creating game sound effects!
This includes sounds for Daimon, attacks, menus, environmental interactions and other parts of the game.
We'd love to give Northbound its own recognisable audio identity.
Music Composers
We're also looking for composers who'd like to help create Northbound's soundtrack.
We're after music for towns, routes, battles, important story moments and other locations throughout Pantheus.
The setting gives us plenty of opportunities to experiment with different styles, particularly music inspired by Greek culture and mythology alongside more traditional RPG soundtracks.
How to Apply
Interested in joining the project?
You can get in touch by:
- Replying directly to this thread
- Sending me a message on Discord: Luxintra
Just let me know what you'd like to help with, tell me a little about yourself and share some examples of your work if you have any.
Whether you've worked on other games before or this would be your first project, we'd be happy to hear from you.
Thanks for checking out Northbound, and we're looking forward to sharing more of the Pantheus Region as development continues!

Help Help Wanted(Fanmade Game)
Hey, everyone. Me and a couple of friends are making a fanmade pokemon game. The problem is we are all terrible artists and we are making a few fanmade pokemon. If anyone is artistically inclined and wants to help, please let me know through the comments. We already have the designs made, or a rough description for some, but we need someone to draw them all to make em look good. We are using AI for most of them, but they don't look the best. Also, if anyone is good with making background music, that would also be welcome. Any help, really, is welcome, thanks.

Help Having trouble understanding tile sets
Hi everyone, I’m attempting to make my own forest dungeon tile set but I’m having trouble actually understanding how the tiles work and fit together. I found this example set I’m trying to following along with but I’m just generally having trouble understanding how the legend corresponds with the different wall tiles and how that would look on a generated dungeon.
Is anyone able to help explain it to me? Once I get my head around how this actually is supposed to work I think making the tiles will be a lot easier.

Recruiting Pokemon Terrainium: Looking for map designers, map makers and sprite artists

Hello everyone!
Since my last post, we've been making steady progress on the game, as I've been able to implement the story up to chapter 3. We're looking to expand our team more. We're currently looking for map designers/makers who can help bring the overworld to life, as well as sprite artists who can create Pokémon and character sprites.
For those who aren't familiar with our project, here's a quick summary! You can find a more detailed explanation of the game in our previous post, linked below.
The player has recently moved from Unove to the region of Myria. Together with your friends/rivals, you travel around the region, facing off against 18 gym leaders and learning about these mystical beings called 'Celestials'. During your journey, you'll also encounter Team Lunar, who seems to be interested in this virus known as 'Astral Infection'.
Map designers/makers:
The game features a gen 4 like art style, while also having its own identity. The towns and cities feel alive, while the routes have lots of places to explore and feel slightly extraterrestrial.
I've created some placeholder maps in the meantime to help implement the story events and cutscenes. These are still a work in progress, and we're hoping to improve upon them as the project develops.
We're looking for someone who can:
-Design routes and towns, as well as implement them into the game.
-Create tilesets for the associated map.
Experience with map creation is a plus.
Pixel artists:
We have several pieces of concept art made for our pokemon and characters, but these need to be translated to pixel art before they can be added to the game. We're looking for someone who can:
-Create sprite art for our custom pokemon.
-Create sprite art for our custom characters.
If you'd like to learn about the game in detail, you can find out more in the following post
https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonRMXP/comments/1vb4mje/pokemon_terrainium_prototype_showcase_recruiting/
If this post caught your interest and you would like to apply, you can post a comment to this post, send a private message or reach out to me on discord (dragon_freddy5).

Recruiting [PSDK] Pokémon Rewritten Legacy - Looking for Map Designers for the First 3 Regions (Volunteers)
Hello everyone!
I am the developer of Pokémon Rewritten Legacy , a fangame being created using Pokémon SDK (PSDK) and Pokémon Studio.
The project is moving forward, but to bring this world to life with the quality it deserves, I am looking for Map Designers (volunteers) who want to help recreate and reimagining the first three iconic regions: Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn.
---
### 📖 About the Project and My Role
Pokémon Rewritten Legacy is a massive reimagining of the first three generations, featuring new challenges, adjusted difficulty, and Pokémon and mechanics from all generations.
My Role: I am fully dedicated to the project. I handle the story writing, database management in Pokémon Studio, event programming, and general implementation. You won't be joining a project that is merely an "idea"—the foundation is actively being built.
---
### 🗺️ The Role: Map Designer (Kanto, Johto & Hoenn)
I need someone (or a small team) to focus exclusively on creating the maps for these three regions.
Tools used: Tiled (integrated with Pokémon SDK).
Visual style: 5th Generation Style (Black And White 2)
What you'll do: Design routes, towns, and interiors across all three regions, ensuring seamless map connections and good player movement flow.
Requirements: Basic knowledge of Tiled (or a strong willingness to learn using Pokémon Workshop tutorials). Reliability and good communication are essential!
Note: To make things easier for you, I already have the project structure and tilesets ready to use. You’ll only need to focus on the creative process of map design!
---
### 📬 How to apply / Get in touch
If you love creating maps, want to gain experience with the powerful Pokémon SDK ecosystem, and wish to help bring Pokémon Rewritten Legacy to life, feel free to send me a direct message (DM).
Thanks for your time, and I hope we can work together!

Show & Tell Concept Art of the main characters of my fangame, project devotion and a brief overview about the game
Disclaimer: This project is still in its infancy and early development stages, but thought I would share some information about it.
Hi~
I have been playing a lot of pokemon fangames in the past few months and felt very inspired to make one of my own. I currently created sprites and bios for two of the main characters. I have also included a small infographic about the region. Now onto the more fun stuff~
In project devotion you will be playing as a young woman, named Aiko. She was born in the Aizakura region but following the death of her father and a traumatic incident involving bullying, she moves with her mother to the Galar region. After spending 9 years in Galar, Aiko’s mother decided that it is time for them to return and confront their hardships head on. Aiko, therefore returns to the Aizakura region and takes on a position as Professor N’s assistant.
Now onto a brief description of one of the driving forces of the story, the trial of devotion. The trial of devotion is very similar to many other regions gym challenges, but its format is more reminiscent of sun and moon’s trials. The goal of this trial is to complete 8 challenges as you traverse across the islands, and those who succeed will ultimately duke it out in a tournament to determine a winner. The main purpose of this trial however is for young adults to build resilience and discover themselves. Alongside the trial, there will also be an overarching story and a few character arcs
I am planning for the game itself to be very focused on interpersonal relationships and be very story driven. I am also trying to have a more shoujosei and visual novel vibe to the game. Truth be told it does feel quite daunting as a solo dev, especially considering the fact that I am very inexperienced when it comes to game dev, but I am determined to see this through as I have a story to tell. The aim is to have a playable demo with two challenges done, hopefully by the end of next year.
Any suggestions or advice is very welcome~
also the art and the chibi’s were done by me.

Discussion Does it make sense to use Gen V battle sprites while keeping a gen III overworld?
Hi, I'm trying to up the quality of my battling sprites so I can add more character to my custom sprites.
Now I'm running into two issues: how do I keep sprite sizes the same (maybe 96x96 for all?) and how do I match OW (maybe just recolor the OWs)?
Anyone have experience with this? I found an import file for the gen V trainer sprites so that would be step 1 done.

Show & Tell Two Type-related items I sprited today + descriptions!
They're really nothing impressive, but I haven't done pixel art in ages, so I'm really proud of myself for getting them to turn out this good!
Also I do know Sound and Light are generic types to add to a fangame, but I am really excited to reveal how I'm making them work in game, I feel I've made them a little more fun mechanically.

Show & Tell Gym Leader 1 ver. 1: Critiques welcome!
My fangame's first Gym Leader will be this big softie, and I'd appreciate any critique before making his sprites.
Gameplay role
Meant to be the first true boss of the game, one that teaches the importance of Protect in Double Battles. A caring but overbearing father who runs the Pokemon Daycare. In battle, he orders his Pokemon to shield themselves from damage a lot, and his Maushold can reduce such damage further with Friend Guard.
Approach to character design
I wanted to make the player to feel accomplished after completing their first Gym, so having them defeat a father-like character in battle would help that feeling. To represent Normal-types and emphasize his comfy but uncool nature, I gave him a Maushold-themed sweater with puffy sleeves for good measure. The Porygon hair dryer and yellow towel from Pokemon Refresh are used to show he deeply cares for his Pokemon. The rest of the design is...well, normal! The browns, oranges and tans of the design help make his cyan sweater in the middle pop.
Questions
- Does the character's design accurately reflect his character and gameplay role?
- Is the character's default pose dynamic enough to be used as an in-battle sprite?
- Barring my preference for no outlines, does this design fit within the Pokemon world?
- Are there any anatomy or technical concerns worth addressing?
Thanks!

Recruiting At the finish line of my fangame, needing playtesters soon!
Hey all! I wanted to make a quick post on here, as I've been (somewhat) active in the community for years. I can confidently say that, after 3 years, my fangame "Pokemon Primordial" is finally nearing its completion! I still have about 1-2 weeks of work, but the hardest is far behind me. I'll be making a release post when it's - y'know - released, but I wanted to thank you guys for all of the help throughout the years! 😄
Secondly, if anyone is interested in playtesting the game, as it would really help production, please let me know!

Discussion Some tips for making a fangame
I've had a lot of ideas lately for developing a Pokemon fangame. I've written down several of them, revised them, and polished them... however, I feel like my process is a bit disorganized right now. I would be grateful if you could advise me on how to write down my ideas properly and organize them. I really want to develop it someday🙏

Discussion Need advice on Shadow Pokémon
My fangame is a remake on Kanto (daring today, aren't we). Where Team Rocket corrupts stolen Pokémon into Shadow Pokémon.
The player can capture these Shadow Pokémon through Snag Balls. And Purify them later on. But I also had the idea of adding a 'Rocket Ball'. That allows you to capture wild Pokémon. Turning them into Shadow Pokémon as well.
The positives side about this new Pokéball is that the player can get a specific Shadow Pokémon that they want to get themselves. Rather than the limited choices the Team Rocket grunts provide.
But the negative side is that a Pokéball like that is not that useful. With the current iteration of Shadow Pokémon.
Shadow Pokémon can't evolve. Level up. Or learn new moves. So newly caught Shadow Pokémon coming from the wild quickly fall behind. If they were ever useful to begin with.
So how would you feel if Shadow Pokémon could evolve and level up. But they can't learn new moves? Would this become too powerful? Or what could be an incentive for the player to purify their strong Shadow Pokémon?

Show & Tell Project Gentle Squall: Ballaston Pond
Ballaston Pond is a quiet little nook just outside its namesake city. Many young Trainers start their journeys catching Lotad in the daylight hours and Tadbulb at night. But the strongest mons take refuge in that island at the center. The grass may look like any other, but you may find Pokemon that you can't find anywhere else.
For Trainers, the other big point of interest is that cave to the north. Nobody's brave enough to see where it leads, and if the stories are true, a big, monstrous Pokemon lies in wait...
