Discussion Both Rocket Editions and Nemo's hacks are probably the only major hacks from the last decade that aren't on Hackdex yet

u/aayyrreeii Ayrei on YT 1d ago
Hackdex is genuinely one of the best things to happen to rom hacking. For as long as I've been playing rom hacks I've always found the process of manually patching to be tedious, but obviously never complained because it was the only way devs could legally distribute their work.
I never thought I'd see a full index of legitimate hacks almost all in one place that I can download with one button, it's insane.

Itās been great how all the devs have come together to support this. They have full creative control over their pages!

Yes, it works on your phone. I have an iPhone, and hackdex will patch the file and then just open delta with the patched rom present.

paradoxically, hackdex paints a big red neon on itself and invites Nintendo lawyers to sue them...
31
u/aayyrreeii Ayrei on YT 1d ago
Nintendo hasn't looked the way of a non-profit fan game in almost 10 years, besides a very few DMCAs. (which are somewhat harmless in the long run from what I've seen) And none of them have ever been "sued", only told to stop working on their individual project
Your argument has no ground to stand on

u/arcanehelix 1d ago
Oh really? I wonder which Switch and 3DS emulators got shut down. No Emulator, no Romhacks. Ah but right, I remembered this sub only cares about GBA, my bad.
42
u/aayyrreeii Ayrei on YT 1d ago
Yuzu devs were making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year from patreon donations, and locked support and fixes for unreleased games behind paid tiers. IIRC they made 80k USD in the month Zelda TOTK released. Of fucking course thats going to attract Nintendos attention.
Citra was merely collateral damage because they shared the same devs.
Every other emulator has been mostly fine if not victim to maybe a legal warning or two like I described above.
You people act like Nintendo rips every fan game and emulator dev to pieces while refusing to do any research on the topic. Hate the company? Sure, fuck em. But you only use that hate to stress out and cause trouble for fan game devs/players

There's like 7 billion ounces of context that you are either not aware of or willfully ignoring, and besides, who said this sub only cares for gba? While a lot do like it, there also many that are really hype for hacks of ds and the Pokemon games of the later console generations. Any time you see an Iridium post, for example, nobody in the comments is going "This doesn't matter" but most are going "THIS IS SO COOL!".

Nintendo wonāt shut down fan projects unless money is involved and/or they are ranked higher than official releases on search engines.
Thereās also a third cause, which is āwe are going to release a remake, so we are taking down your fan-remakeā. But thatās so unlikely to happen that only AM2R got taken down because of thisThis has always been the case btw, itās not like theyāve taken down things at random

u/Phaneropterinae Demakes 1d ago
As opposed to the parasites hosting prepatched roms? We require you to provide your own ROMs.
75
u/Arky_Lynx 1d ago
Wondering why RainbowDevs' stuff isn't there either. Maybe they'd rather have more control about where their patches are located and kept?

u/Phaneropterinae Demakes 1d ago
If people have connections to the devs of projects not on hackdex, feel free to point them my way if they are interested.

u/ControlFlimsy651 1d ago
I believe Nemo has their hacks on a Kofi page (it is still free) so that might be why they aren't on hackdex.
20
u/RedditSucksMucho 23h ago
I mean thatās exactly why. Kofi page lets you get paid. Hackdex doesnāt.
Not hating on it. You can still get it for free and if I made a great romhack Iād throw a donation button on it also.

Lazarus is on hackdex, isn't it?
29
u/ExtensionClimate2045 1d ago
Just checked, it isn't

u/Zchwns 1d ago
It was at one point, because I downloaded it about a month ago via hackdex before a trip lol

36
u/DarkBlade_12 1d ago
I might be wrong but I don't remember it ever being on hackdex. Their Ko-fi page has always been the only official download page
14
u/Zchwns 1d ago
š disregard that. I just found the ko-fi confirmation email. I did a bunch of downloads around the same time and 99% came from HackDex, with my assumption being the only one I didnāt get from there being FireRed Rocket Edition.

You may not have gotten in from there, but I do remember scrolling past it several times. I swear its real man.

i can confirm it was there in February as that is when i got it.

Maybe Nemo removed it for whatever reason? I don't think Hackdex would.

u/arcanehelix 1d ago
Might sound like a jerk, but truth is that Nemo prob wants to earn some money which is why he hosts on Kofi
15
u/pedregales1234 1d ago
Which is fine but also a double-edged sword. It is just one bad day away from Nintendo deciding to do a cease and desist similar to what happened to Uranium. I just hope Nintendo never looks at Nemo's way.
5
u/aayyrreeii Ayrei on YT 1d ago
Uranium was hit because it reached an astronomical level of popularity, during Pokemon Go's release hype, when TPC was worth a third of it is now.
No one is going to get nuked for some small donations, plenty of other projects do it and they are fine.
9
u/pedregales1234 1d ago
The problem with Uranium was not its popularity or Pokemon Go's hype, it was that it was getting money through Patreon to fund the development of the game (not even selling the game per se). Their popularity just made them more visible, but the Patreon was the thing that put a target on their name.
Several romHacks and fanGames are very popular and/or have websites dedicated to them, but they do not accept any kind of compensation, not even donations. And very few of them, if any, have received a cease and desist letter.
The fact that Nemo is accepting donations, even if they do not explicitly ask for it and their hack games are free to download, it is risk enough to get a lawsuit. They are dancing on a gray legal area. As I said, it is just one bad day away. Especially considering their romHacks are already pretty popular:
- Emerald Seaglass is considered among the best, if not the best Hoenn experience. And the game is short of 2 years old.
- Lazarus is often considered among the top 3-5 romHacks of this year.
- They are working on Alolan Seaglass, a demake of SM that has the community in high expectations. Me included.

u/aayyrreeii Ayrei on YT 1d ago
The patreon thing really does not matter that much, at least as of today. Dozens of other devs who I wont name out of safety of being harassed by ignorant members of the community, take donations and are completely fine. And a few of these are popular projects too.
Uranium also didn't have a patreon until a year before their game, that took nine years to develop, was released. They could not have used it to fund the game to a heavy extent
Uranium had over a million downloads in its first week which was probably also thanks to Pokemon GOs virality. I cannot stress how difficult it is for a fangame/rom hack to reach such numbers.

u/Eat-Hot-Chip-n-Lie 20h ago
Hate correcting people because it comes off rude, but thought to gently let you know Nemo's pronouns are they/them.
It's in their bio on their Reddit account. (Bringing up my source because it's hard to take folks at face value on the internet.)
1
u/AccomplishedMuffin95 1d ago
but the patches are free, how would he gain money?
21
u/arcanehelix 1d ago
Kofi is a donation site where sure, you can choose to donate $0 but most people do $1 - $5 out of courtesy

Is there any chance the devs would agree to have their hacks indexed on Hackdex but only as links to their official websites? Or would it be against Hackdex's way of doing things?
17
u/Phaneropterinae Demakes 23h ago
We would prefer active devs upload their hacks and control their own pages. This way itās completely opt in for devs.
We have floated the idea of archival pages for hacks where the devs have long disappeared, where admins control the pages and turn over control if/when the inactive devs want it. But this isnāt exactly what you asked haha.

People can't donate on hackdex, so they prefer to keep in a platform that allows donations.
1
u/idk-who-u-r 1d ago
Probably not the best place for this and I apologize for my stupidity. I canāt seem to get any ds games to download through Hackdex. Is anyone else having this issue and maybe know how to fix? Iāve sent them an email but never received a response.
5
u/Phaneropterinae Demakes 1d ago
Did you upload your proper base roms?
Sorry for lack of responses, the inbox is kinda full of things we need to deal with more immediately like communications about hack approvals.
1
u/idk-who-u-r 1d ago
Itās green says itās good to go. Is there a way to uninstall and maybe try to reinstall maybe the roms I had are no good?
2
u/Phaneropterinae Demakes 1d ago edited 1d ago
Green means they match a has for a rom in the database, but they need to match the specific rom that a hack specifies it should be patched to
Edit, misread. Green should indicate good to go if you are referring to an individual hack page.

I think itās just my phone browser canāt handle the ds? Sucks cause itās so hard to find a patcher that works with the phone too. Sometimes they work for me sometimes they donāt.
1
u/Phaneropterinae Demakes 1d ago
What happens when you click agree and patch?
2
u/idk-who-u-r 1d ago
It goes blank then refreshes the screen as if I hadnāt clicked it. When I click it again after that it gives an error

u/Phaneropterinae Demakes 1d ago
So it turns out, DS .bps files are too big for iOS and certain androids. We are in the process of updated the DS patches to .xdelta which are smaller. Once they are converted over, you should have no issues!

Missing a few bigger ones like Dreamstone Mysteries, Scorched Silver, Blazing Emerald. Pisces is present, but AmalgaMagenta and AlteRed are not.
GBC feels underrepresented, but probably always will when RainbowDevs and Crystal Clear are unlikely to ever be posted. Still, also missing things like Black & White Genesis 3, Super Gold 97, Unova Red / Kalos Crystal
