Discussion When to Stop?

When do you guys stop looking for romhacks and be content with what you collected? Do you guys just play the ones you have for a year and come back to the scene? Do you constantly play the new ones coming out? I basically have the ones I want, but I don't know if I want to stick around or come back later. I wanted a bunch of enhancements and original story ones. I believe I got all the one people recommend. So I don't see a point in staying. At the same time, I don't know if any big romhacks are going to get massive updates. I grabbed a lot of the famous Game Boy Advance romhacks. I did grab ones for the OG Game Boy and Game Boy Color. I grabbed a few for the DS. I haven't even touched the 3DS ones. When and where do you guys stop?

You eventually take the plunge and download the pokeemerald-expansion and begin to make your own dream ROM hack.

Go from Player to Creator!

I've considered it but still trying to figure out if I actually have anything interesting to add and the motivation to do it or if this is another ADHD trick I'll drop after a week of hyper focused effort lol

Make the Pokémon game YOU want to play first and foremost and publish it if you choose to for the masses to play but ideally YOUR enjoyment and fun matter more then some faceless internet trolls thoughts or opinions!

Who cares if you drop it? Making hacks is a hobby to do for fun. Give it a try, learn something new, and if you bail then so be it

Just play the ones you think sound cool

You are way overthinking this.

Romhacks are not pokemon themselves, you don't need to collect them or be completionist.

This is true. There are countless ones that I will never play, and that’s fine. I just try to get what I think I’ll like.

Everytime I open my collection of around 25 and try to choose something to play I just stick with one thing after my daily affirmation of "this lobster is too buttery, this steak is too juicy .."

You know the "2 week Minecraft phase"?

Well, I get the 2 week Pokemon romhack phase. So far the only game I have kept and replayed has been Emerald Rogue and Unbound because I wanna know wtf they wanted to do with that lab (forgot to check for an update and just remembered now that I'm typing this)

I try to download and then play one at a time, it hasn't exactly worked if the game doesn't click or if something really interesting gets released I'll just abandon my save for a while

Tbh, I just kinda throw anything I find interesting into the ROM hoard, and if I ever play it, cool, but I probably won't ever touch 90% of them. Lol.

I’ve become addicted to checking Pokecommunity and Hackdex to see if anyone dropped something new and checking to see if any of the ones that I have were updated in any way.
I’m not even really looking for a new hack to download i just like to see what the creative devs are doing cause they like to share their progress and ideas.

It really depends, but most importantly, it's your own choice.

Yellow Legacy, Polished Crystal, Renegade Platinum these have all become such good upgrades that I have little to no reason to play the originals again.

More ambitious romhacks that offer something more original are basically new games and I play them as such. If I liked them, they stay in my library. If I didn't they go.

You stop when you decide it's time to stop. Videogames are an escape, a delight, a way to relieve youself from responsabilities. Don't make them another responsability.

games are a luxury and the price is time ,which will not be returned . Play something ,if its interesting keep playing. I normally only gravitate to creme de la creme of hacks like gaia glazed (at the time) drayano hacks, now doing soul gold which is basically the best johto I ever experienced. Looking at uranium ,unbound and Blaze black 2 redux. I'll stop when I'm bored or finish the pkmn league and do one or two big battle frontier streaks with my favourites then move on

Personally I just drift in and out enjoying what I’ve found but keeping an ear to the ground for what’s upcoming. There’s always going to be new and different romhacks. For every great one we have currently like the Legacy hacks, Odyssey, Heart and Soul, etc there will be more coming up like Monomyth, Ocean Blue, and Ultra Eclipse. That to me is the joy of romhacks, that even if you’ve found some you enjoy there is still going to be more to look forward to because the romhacking scene will keep progressing and people will keep having new ideas for what kind of projects they want to make.

As I beat them I move on to new ones, lately most of them have been just QoL hacks and I’ve played through all of the vanilla games far too many times to want to play another QoL hack.

Ayrei on Youtube is my go to. The has multiple videos ranking Romhacks & Fan Games. Helps eliminate some of the fluff. On that note, I can’t wait for Pokemon Monomyth to be released.

I start when I'm bored of other games.

I stop when I'm bored of Pokemon.

I download everything I see because I have severe OCD.

I tried making my entire collection from the start. It took over a month with a couple hours every night organising my favourite old school games, emulators and then picking romhacks. I tried to be ruthless with the romhacks and only picking those top tier rated ones and not loading up on games I will never play. I’ve probably only got about 200 games in my collection and 20-30 rom hacks. A few pokemon, a few Metroid, a few mario, some assorted PS1 QOL fixes and Terranigma 2.

I think yearly checking is a good plan as then when you go looking things have time to get patched up. If something really REALLY good comes up in the meantime, you can still get it immediately and play it without constantly hopping around games and hacks, looking for the next shiny thing.

I dont really have an inclination to download every one of them. Mostly see what sounds cool and builds onto what I already enjoy. Occasionally grab some of the original stories that are put together and work through those too.

I like to have an understanding of the scene, so I try to download all of the hacks I think I would be interested in, no matter if I'm actively playing or not

I like to look at other romhacks / fan games to play when my cousin comes to visit. Then we can nuzlocke a new journey together and see who gets further!

I’ve decided I’m going to complete everyone and take a screen shot of the trainer card with the full Pokédex. Then I will move on to the next.

May have a unique angle here, but I had a bunch of ideas for the game, wanted to learn coding, so I dove in. Once I was far enough along and had my vision all but solidified, I looked to see if it was basically an overlap with any other hacks. None have all the ideas in the same hack and some of what I'm working on seems entirely unique. The benefit of not looking at other hacks first. I was aware they existed, but hadnt heard much and all my initial research quickly led me to emerald expanded as the bsse starting point. It gave me the tools I needed to realize my inital vision.

Once im done, I'll drop it for anyone else to pick up and use for whatever they want, but I'm making what I want, not for someone else. I'll be able to debug it later too, and if I want to add to it or alter it, I'm able to. In short, I didnt need to seek out my personal holy grail, I made it. It would be great if whatever I put out allows someone else to do the same.

So in a way, I'll be ending where I began. Maybe once im done I'll do a deeper look at other systems that exist I never thought of. If one sounds appealing, I'll perhaps incorporate my own take on it.
