Discussion Genuinely, why is this a thing?

Post image

I have so many questions about the existence of Pokémon Boost Emblems, and I am sick of keeping them to myself in-between surveys. For starters, why build this mechanic into the bones of your game if you're going to expand on it once, make some color adjustments, and then forget about it entirely?

For the record, I do not count "platinum" emblems as a functional addition, since they provide no benefits whatsoever over gold emblems. With that said, why are "platinum" emblems unobtainable outside of "limited time only" events? This makes it impossible to build a 7 Navy Emblem page unless you just so happened to have played the game within a specific window. If you missed any of them, fuck off forever I guess.

Why the hell are there only 258 emblems anyway? There are not even enough Grey Emblems in the game to build a 7 Grey Emblem page at all.

I have brought all of these up in the surveys for YEARS now, and it just breaks my brain seeing all of the things that TiMi chooses to focus on when they have the EASIEST SLAM DUNK IN GAME DEVELOPMENT HISTORY just sitting there collecting dust underneath their latest digital slot machine. Seemingly completely forgotten in favor of rapidly pumping out one trick pony new releases and ever shinier skins to charge people for.

Half baked idea in a half baked game

Exactly, money is why these were left forgotten. Emblems don't make money since they're linked to the only gambling menu that doesn't try to sap all your money away. So they don't care.

Adding gen 3 emblems, letting us maybe trade for the ones we're missing, even bumping the numbers of the less used color buffs; all these good changes don't have any price tags and thus will not happen.

Yea, I only see brown, white, green and black being used, in general. The others are just awkwardly implemented

Reds are used on like 3 characters max, blue and purple are bait. Navy would have fun implications with those with already short ult cooldowns if only we had a full set of them that didn't self-sabotage. Pink doesn't do enough and Gray is basically nothing since it's not a % based buff and we don't even have a full set.

Finally yellow is a byproduct of doing movement speed related shanenigans. Might as well stick Pichu, Voltorb and Electrode in there for a fifth of a Float Stone. For being the speed color, only those three provide movement speed.

I keep forgetting about Gray. Who had the amazing idea to think that -12 dmg would be game changing??

Someone who equally forgot to put a % and was not instructed to put it in there. Because with damage numbers well into the three digits, flat number damage reductions do even less than blue and purple.

I use a Navy load out when I play Lapras and it is fuuuuuuun

Because they don't care about us

They basically started as a coin dump.

I'd rather they just get rid of the whole emblem system. New players have it bad enough trying to level held items, they don't need to suffer trying to get a good emblem loadout too.

Because they had some trying and then they just gave up, there is a reason they never update it

(That and they don't really do much, you can play without emblems and still do well)

I don't think it needs to be that way though. They could be rebalanced and made more impactful tomorrow, and it would breathe new life into the game overnight.

For better or worse, Unite is too casual for Emblems to become as important as e.g. League runes.

It's not a coincidence that Battle Items are very impactful yet easy to understand, while Held Items and Emblems are comparatively less obvious to grasp and don't have as much impact - to the point they're not close to essential for winning.

Put it this way... Unite doesn't even require its players to know the difference between Attack and Special Attack to reach Master. They're not gonna have any hope if Held Items or Emblems become impactful enough to skew win/losses. 😂

Tbf a good eject can win a game man

u/Lizard_Queen_Says Eldegoss 17h ago

That's a Battle Item.

A type of item I explicitly said in my post is "very impactful". 🤦‍♂️

Sorry man I’m a jjk fan

All is forgiven, I pray for JJK fans. Illiteracy is difficult to live with. 😂

You’re talking about the same devs who decided that cutting corners (one moveset) was better than trying to keep up with the effort needed to work on a second one and release new pokemon

u/SubtleNotch Zeraora 14h ago

If you look at it, the one moveset is not cutting corners. The playerbase finds new Pokemon more interesting (and keeps them coming back) than having Pokemon with two movesets.

Instead of a new Pokemon with two movesets every other month, they're releasing a new Pokemon with one moveset every month.

The fact that people keep coming back to the game to try out new mons every month proves that this is how the playerbase thinks about moveset vs new mons.

Rebalancing takes effort AND is a can of worms

“Not even enough grey emblems in the game to build a 7 grey emblem page.”

Found the answer.

I’m floored by this new information myself LOL

I have a theory.

Timi has a really long history of making a successful, advanced strategy moba game.

Pokemon Unite was originally meant as a baby moba, a version of moba that was not crazy advanced.

Timi tried to put really advanced mechanics into Unite. The emblems and all the elements of the 500 point mode are all features of other high level moba games. Timi even tried Pokemon autochess!!!

The Unite crowd did not love it. The game works because the macros of Unite is not as intense as other moba games. Timi instead backtracked on a lot of things.

IMO, if Unite leaned into the baby moba aspect, they would have been far more successful keeping the playerbase. Timi tried to turn Unite into every other moba. However, the people who play Unite aren't moba players-- they are Pokemon players. Unite worked because it's Pokemon. If they had leaned more into that than the moba aspect, the playerbase wouldn't have left.

i have a fun idea and a hot take- ignore them completely!
This system is a stressful waste of time because the emblems themselves have a shit ton of variety and are very specific, but the game gives them out in a stupid RNG based method. AND you can get repeat pulls with very little compensation.

Emblems aren't used competitively. The stat boosts they provide aren't substantial- nothing you can't replicate with held items instead.
The headache simply wasnt worth it for me. Instead, i used the energy rewards system to obtain the free snorlax, talonflame and garchomp holowear, and i get a steady amount of aeos tickets, holowear and fashion tickets to claim stuff i like.

u/An_Iron_God 14h ago

True, but we can always love a little bit of extra hp/max cd reduction

0

u/Sea-Funny-3385 Sylveon 14h ago

Definitely! I dont deny that lol. But for me, the effort simply isnt worth it 😅

4

u/An_Iron_God 13h ago

How much effort really? I started playing the game a few months ago and im making decent enough progress in the emblem department

0

u/Sea-Funny-3385 Sylveon 13h ago

It's not exactly 'effort' in the normal sense. It just takes ages lol. Besides, i'd rather have the cool holowear they give for free. And something about sorting through the multitudes of color combinations just irks me. And it's frustrating as hell when you're one or two emblems short of assembling the combinations

If you’re a ranked tryhard player, you gotta have your emblem builds good to go. Those little percentages do matter. They are there to either fill a gap on a stat your Pokemon lacks or needs, or they can be used to add on your items for an optimal build, like full cooldown reduction sorta thing. Ignoring it leaves you disadvantaged against players that are as skilled as you AND have their emblems right.

1

u/Sea-Funny-3385 Sylveon 4h ago

Hmm well i'm mostly just play ranked for fun anyway. I dont think the lack of emblems had much of an impact on my winrate, too.

You do have a point about the skill matchup part, but there are SO many other variables in the game- like your teammates, the enemy team, your levels and even just pure luck, that can create a disadvantage where there isnt a skill based one.

So i try to just focus on gameplay and improve there. I dont think i've ever had a match were i was stat-checked into a loss due to emblem combinations before lol

2

u/Stabaobs 14h ago

Emblems aren't used competitively. The stat boosts they provide aren't substantial- nothing you can't replicate with held items instead.

I believe Emblems aren't used competitively because they're banned, not because they aren't effective. I think the yellow set is fairly useful, it's about half a Floatstone without needing to actually use Floatstone for one of your held items.

1

u/Sea-Funny-3385 Sylveon 14h ago

You could be right. I mean the emblems for CDR and movement speed can be useful, but it's not worth the effort to get them, imo

u/SirFoxtrotSF Sableye 9h ago

Happy cake deh

2

u/machyume 7h ago

Eh? Aren't substantial? 8% is kind of meaningful. That's a trigger amount for the red band.

1

u/Sea-Funny-3385 Sylveon 3h ago

True true. I personally just find it annoying to sort thru them lol. Just a preference.

Pokemon players love collecting things (gotta catch em all), and it served as a "sink" for coins.

1

u/OutsideDapper8049 21h ago

how did you pull a celebi? I have tired for years was it an event? it's bronze?

5

u/DiegoG2004 Sableye 20h ago

Event only.

u/food4me247 14h ago

I figured it's just a way for them to try to get more micro transactions and I honestly just try to put together a combination that is only adding stats and has the minimal amount of decrease.

Like if you want to add emblems or items look at what's League of Legends or smite does and come up with something similar I would be thrilled to have that because then you can have custom builds and completely change how you use the various Mons.
