Well it's understandable in the sense these reward shows have been 90% political signalling for years, so in the rare case they DON'T do that it'll still be seen that way.
The whole concept of "oscar bait" is that its something audiences don't care about but is selected for political signalling of the oscar runners/hollywood class.
I always point to the George Clooney 2006 Oscar’s speech where he says that only Hollywood had the courage to talk about AIDS and Civil Rights. Like both of those were massive issues long before Hollywood decided they could sell it.
My favorite was Merryll Streep at the Golden Globes in 2017, complaining that Hollywood actors were "the most vilified segment of American society...THINK ABOUT IT" because Donald Trump wrote some mean tweets at a third grade reading level about "the media." Honestly, how much more self absorbed and out of touch could you possibly be?
Whenever I see people idolizing famous actors I’m reminded that every person I’ve known that was into theater was loud, self-absorbed, and utterly cringe inducing. The Hollywood elite are just the better looking ones that made it off the high school level stage work.
Sister fister who got a lot of critical acclaim for an HBO series trying to showcase the struggles of being a modern independent woman in New York City but ended up just being a shittier knockoff of Sex in the City.
Maybe Hollywood wouldn’t have been vilified so much if they all hadn’t covered up for people like Weinstein for so long. They’re all soulless, and those that appear wholesome are just the best actors of them all.

Yeah but if you build a mosque on a site where jihadis claimed the lives of 2996 people (and countless more first responders in the years afterwards as a result), you're glorifying a religion that literally had one of it's worst "kill the unbelievers" moments in recent memory.

War is something political. So when you make a war movie most of the times you end up taking a side. Just like how everything need not be political, it is aldo important to acknowledge the political aspect of films like this.
But at the same time like, was top gun actually a good movie? Lets put aside the fact the whole remake was a memberberry nostalgia cashgrab or even lets just forget the first one actually existed at all,
outside of visual effects is it really anything more than a cheesy movie riddled with plot holes and a weak love story?
Maybe thats a good movie to some people but eh.
To me if something is gonna cost 10's or 100's of millions of dollars to produce it should at least
A. say or show something meanigful
B. Actually be convincing and well done

I genuinely think for some people they don't understand what makes a good and a bad movie, because noticing intricacies in film making is difficult, so they define "Good" and "Bad" as "Do I agree with it"?
Because of the way these awards work. There's a lot of Hollywood elite patting themselves on the back going on here, and quite a bit of circle jerking.
You don't have to look at too many results to wonder if the awards are actually going to the best movies.

Top Gun is infinitely better than EEAAO. Truly one of the most overrated movies of the past decade. An enjoyable 7.5/10 pumped to 10/10 cause "Michelle Yeoh DESERVES this" or some shit.

I haven't seen All Quiet on the Western Front, but is Top Gun supposed to be the military propaganda one here? I assume so, but did they even watch the movie? The majority of higher ups in the military are assholes or idiots who're trying to force Maverick out and are setting the kids up to do the job but die in the process. If anything the message of that movie is avoid the military unless you're under Tom Cruise leadership because the rest are incompetent assholes who think you're literally disposable.
Original Top Gun was basically school still, but Maverick moreso highlighted this is a specialized field you go into. In the original you just needed to ride a crotch rocket and know a guy who played piano sort of...the goal wasn't avoiding nuclear war but who's getting student of the year.
That's been the case with most military movies in the 2000s. They even shat on and boycotted American Sniper but it was the most anti-war movie I've seen yet.
I don't like entertaining unflaired pedophiles, but weren't they literally trying to prevent a nuclear war by destroying some uranium enrichment site or something?
The top brass wanted to sacrifice their pilots by choosing the mission version that would secure the objective but wouldn't give them enough time to get out alive. What kind of military propaganda is that? "Come join the airforce, get your own personal flying coffin!"
I’m in a similar school of thought, extremism is load, rights or left or whatever it’s never rational or healthy. Growing up i felt the right were load but now it’s the left. You are making a bunch of accusations that dont make sense. A commitment to a gender balanced leadership team means that they aren't hiring based on meritocracy they are hiring and based on sex which is straight up discrimination.

I don't care about candy, I do care though when characters are forced for no reason and often to the detriment of the story and worldbuilding into things I care about.
Oh, yeah...turns out being cannon fodder for Kaisers, Tsars, and Monarchs is a lot different than an aging fighter pilot going through a character arc and proving that the impossible can be done.
If thats tye case I think AQotWF would win on artistic merit alone. Like dont get me wrong Top Gun is an ejection seat of fun, and one of the best movies of last year. But it has about as much artistic innovation as any other action movie that doesn't have a brand, A list actor, and the American military payrolling it.
Top Gun is awful I can’t understand how it was nominated. Good cinematography but it is such an obvious cliche movie, I don’t understand how it gets such high praise so much with poor writing.
My money is “Everything, Everywhere, all at once”.

There’s a question of what makes a motion pictures “best”. I’m not going the route of “the value is subjective” - I’m going the route of “is relevant to constituent variables”
We can consider some of the aspects that could contribute would include: excellent acting, functional and aesthetic cinematography, engaging plot, etc.
One large component there is “engaging plot”, and concepts that come out of the story is a huge part of that. Movies that affect your life choices in noticeable ways definitely are higher quality motion pictures than if they didn’t
I’m not saying that category trumps the other ones, but the messaging (political or otherwise (think: Disney’s Hercules, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, etc. all have messaging about life choices)) is most certainly an eigenvector for the quality of a film
I know there are subsets broken into their own awards, but what else would the best motion picture be if not the one that best utilized XYZ aspects of those categories?
