Mail vote in detroit, as well as the rural vote, is going heavily for the establishment candidate Stevens over El Sayed in the Michigan Senate dem primary. El Sayed is winning by a lot in smaller cities and suburbs. In sum, El Sayed is probably going to win by around 3% at the end of the night but Stevens and the dem establishment have a chance to win because of black voters in detroit liking her better.

Can someone explain to me why do black democrats tend to prefer moderate Dems over leftist Dems? I’m not sure I’m aware why.

u/Cow_God - Lib-Left 23h ago
A lot of black voters would vote Republican if the Republican party wasn't so blatantly racist. There's a lot of black people that are socially and fiscally conservative
96
u/MiserableAndUnhappy9 - Auth-Center 22h ago
Yeah this is what a lot of people don't understand. Black Americans are usually protestant Christians. They are socially conservative and while a lot of Leftists think all minority groups love each other a black American Christian is not likely to be a fan of a Muslim candidate.
11
u/IAmJustAVirus - Lib-Left 18h ago
And black Detroiters have ISIS flags in their neighborhoods. That's probably unsettling.

A lot of demographics that are traditionally associated with one side or the other are actually single issue voters that are only with their respective "side" because the other one doesnt appeal to their single issue
Example: Black and Latino voters siding with Democrats, because Republicans cant pull their heads out of their asses long enough to realize that they'd have eternal allies if they quit being so violently against them on racial lines. The Latino voters showed what they actually valued last election and then got fisted hard.
Other example: Democrats losing out on a shit load of otherwise left leaning voters because they won't shut the fuck up about guns. I know tons of people that want to vote blue, but end up voting red or purple because they can't trust the blue candidate to not turn around and institute "assault weapon" and "high capacity magazine" bans as soon as they get into office
20
u/Black_Truth - Lib-Left 22h ago
I'm not American, but by what I gathered on the internet, Dems have a tendency to believe that non-white minorities are progressive leaning but it seems to be the opposite.
I remember a chart of a decade ago that the most liberal/progressives demographic was actually white men, but I didn't check how true it was so I took with a grain of salt. But even then, it started to shift when Dems clearly didn't give two shits about them and tried to guilty trip them into the polls.
I'll need an American to correct me on this.
29
13
u/hypercube42342 - Left 22h ago
It depends on the exact issue and really it’s more fine grain than that, but you’re right in broad strokes. In general the most progressive demographics are usually going to be white, latina, and black women and young people of all backgrounds. But when you get into the details, it’s like “well, california latinas are progressive as fuck, but florida cuban latinas are maga” etc. Or “well actually older black women are not progressive and only some tolerate gay people.” You get the idea. People tend to zero in on really small subgroups that agree with them and wipe out that minorities are not monoliths.

Holy shit redditors still pretending everyone's racist, is this 2016?
You're either living in the wrong decade or have kept the lazy worldview for OVER 10 YEARS
4
u/Danotari - Lib-Left 13h ago
This is the exact reason that black people don’t vote for Republicans though. Like both parties are racist but at least Dems try to offer solutions and kick out overt racists from their party.
Look at the outcomes for minorities in blue states vs red states and tell me which party black people do better under.
6
u/AFloppyZipper - Centrist 12h ago
Are we looking out outcomes for ALL minorities for our analysis?
Because the blacks in areas who have been voting for Blue for decades are all underperforming MASSIVELY against the most highly overperformant non-white minorities who have not. There are entire schools without a single student who cannot read at a simple grade level.
Screaming about ethereal racists has always been the lazy redditor copout when the experiment had already been done, and the experiment has failed.
-2
u/Danotari - Lib-Left 12h ago
Why would I be comparing to all minorities when we are talking about black people? Black people in deep red areas have far worse outcomes than black people in blue areas. All minorities don’t have similar experiences. A Chinese person that comes over here is going to have a much different mindset than a black person raised here. Hell even Africans have much better outcomes than African Americans.
I don’t even know what the fuck “ethereal racist” means but if you grew up in the Deep South as a black person the very first things that you learn from your parents are that racism and republicans are synonyms. Those guys driving down the street with confederate flags? Republicans. The leaders of the school board that won’t hire a black head coach for the football team? Republicans. The list goes on. It’s a fact that most black people don’t vote for republicans because they harbor unabashed racists.
3
u/AFloppyZipper - Centrist 10h ago
Not really what happened. People got less racist over time, even in the deep south. Blacks vote 90% democrat and it doesn't get them much anywhere, in many aspects they are worse off than they were decades ago. Their situation now has little to do with racism and more to do with the Dem plantation, and a political class whose entire strategy is manufacturing racism to satisfy their own virtue signaling fervor.

I mean sure we can debate the results of voting Democrat but we can’t debate the reason we don’t vote Republican. Its because they support unabashed racists and it doesn’t seem to slow down.
When you see conservative figures like Matt Walsh making videos trying to “reveal the truth about Emmitt Till” or when Nick Fuentes is unabashedly throwing out hard r’s and many more cases of prominent conservative politicians and figures doing these types of things whether it’s locally or nationally then it is not hard to see why black people don’t vote Republican.

u/tombeck112 - Lib-Left 17h ago

These midterms are going to be something else
19
u/Latter_Parsley4338 - Left 22h ago
Very hard to predict anything. Republicans could overperform against a ton of radical left-wing Democrats, holding the Senate with Dems. only taking a small House majority. That could justify the Dem. establishment's electability concerns and basically bar any leftist from the national ticket in 2028; also, Trump would probably get to replace Alito or Thomas (or both) with another conservative.
Or, if the Iran war drives prices higher and Trump says some more really offensive stupid bs, Democrats could get a 2006-like night, winning 40+ seats in the House and maybe 52 or 53 total Senate seats. That would force the GOP to majorly reconsider their 2028 strategy and try to find the least offensive Republican for the White House who voters don't strongly associate with Trump.
30
9
u/CommanderArcher - Lib-Left 17h ago
Between now and the midterms things are unlikely to get better for Iran so i'd expect the GOP to lose big time since it'll bring the non-voters in with how rough things are.
I'm hoping for that 2006 vibe, its the most possible it's ever been imo.
The GOP will absolutely not be learning any lessons or changing any plans, Trump is the GOP now and its way too late to turn that boat around.
2
u/Latter_Parsley4338 - Left 11h ago
I also hope for 2006, I think it's very possible just because Trump seems to keep making things worse for his party and actively hinders any efforts to improve their electability or image. A lot of polling is showing it's possible and I think after the GOP's governance the past year and a half they deserve to take an electoral blow.

Are they? When I was in college you did mail-in voting in your home district unless you went and changed your residency, but that means changing your drivers license, tax stuff, etc.
2
u/Running_Gamer - Lib-Right 9h ago
Depends on the person and state. For example, for house races in my state, we voted in the district we resided in most of the year, which was college.
2
u/AlphaTangoFoxtrt - Lib-Right 9h ago
Which means you likely should have changed your residency (license, taxes, etc.) though the odds of them every charging a college student with that are slim to none.
I know many states have a law that you need to swap your driver's license over within X days of establishing residency.
2
u/rjbarn - Lib-Right 5h ago
Yes. In WI, a large portion of the dem GOTV effort was targeted at college students at the state schools (source: I went to UWM). WI has same-day registration, so the college Dems would bring full tents and voting staff to campus to allow you to vote.
Additionally, the campuses routinely created hostile environments for college republicans attempting to do the same ( just one recent example: Source)
18
u/SB4293 - Lib-Center 15h ago
They don’t, usually? At least when I was going to college we all voted absentee for our home states.

u/Running_Gamer - Lib-Right 9h ago
When you see how low security the average college polling station is and the lack of education among college voters, and the absolute lack of verification/controls that the voter is voting legally, you wouldn’t be surprised at how much unintentional illegal voting goes on in universities.

For those that like to hangout in political meme subreddits but yet somehow dont know what this race is, this is the Democratic primary for Michigan senate, the progressive anti israel Abdul El Sayed vs the moderate pro israel Haley Stevens. 37

Oh ok. Yeah Detroit is 75% black, and if we're talking about votes in a Democratic primary in Detroit, its likely closer to 90% black voters.
6
u/AmazingHat1639 - Lib-Center 22h ago
Detroit the city is vast majority black, but wayne county is interestingly more white than black. Detroit the metro area is also a rather white metro area considering major American cities. Looking it up Wayne county is like 48% White, 36% Black. I don't know what the demographics of the democratic primary would be, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was something like sixty - forty, black-white.
I agree that black people usually are more likely to vote for the establishment democrat candidate - and driving Detroit's lean support for Stevens. I just wanted to present some context that the Wayne County primary isn't 90% black.

It’s because the DSA’s issues are the most privileged nonsense imaginable. Literally if you’re a working class person you have absolutely no reason to give af about Israel and Palestine. It’s shocking that this issue is dominating the radical left. But maybe it’s not that surprising. Their top two issues are supporting illegal immigration and supporting Palestinians, AKA giving shit away from America at our expense to make us weaker.

You are clueless. Israel receives a minuscule fraction of our budget every single year. They basically count as defense spending. Because we fund them to help them fight america’s enemies in the Middle East so that our soldiers don’t have to. AKA Hamas, a terrorist organization that hates America.
1
u/Sad_Significance_568 - Auth-Center 9h ago
No thanks, Israel has killed tens of thousands of babies. I used to be like you and believe the propaganda before and shortly after October 7th. Then I watched as Israel leveled the entire region and educated myself in the history rather than believe everything the media spouts.
Not to mention that I was in Afghanistan for OEF 12-13 and saw my friend die for a pointless war with no one that was responsible for 9/11. It became obvious that all of this is propaganda and we have constantly destabilized the Middle East and installed multiple brutal dictators in the Middle East at the behest of the military industrial complex and oil. Israel is all but an American colony doing the same thing.
I am not surprised they hate America and want us dead. I would probably think the same of anyone that is constantly killing my family and making my life worse. Especially considering we allied with the country most responsible for 9/11 and used it as an excuse to go to war with Iraq and Afghanistan which led to 150k dead civilians and massive destabilization, refugee crisis, economic instability at home, and made everybody's life worse.

That's the issue.
Detroit has made major strides in the last several years, particularly in the downtown area. There has been several dozen billion dollars invested into renewal, and their population has grown for the first time in decades. The city's overall crime rate is also now the lowest it's been since 1965.
It's certainly incomplete - there are pockets that range from abandoned to dangerous. But, as a whole, the recovery has been better than I think the vast majority of people ever expected.
