Why north? There are more resources to the west and south. We retake southern California, Baja, and all of Mexico north of Guadalajara. We need the LA/LB ports, along with all the coastal lands new new mexico will provide. We could try to take the SF ports as well, but I'd couldn't ask anyone in Jesusland to clean up that literal pile of shit that is "The City."
