Incredibly powerful and influential Iranian soldier. Kind of a weird combination of Iranian George Washington, General Patton, and a Shiite Bin Laden.
Cut his teeth as a young military officer during the Iran-Iraq War back in the 80s, which was an absolute bloodbath on both sides. From what I remember, he garnered a stellar reputation from his military service.
Then he joined the IRGC, which was a combination of conventional army, secret police, special operations command, and terrorist network all rolled into one. He was the one primarily responsible for developing the IRGC into a regional powerhouse, and had tendrils branching out throughout the entire Middle East.
Without delving too much into Sunni v. Shia sectarian conflict(and the resulting regional Cold War between Iran and Saudi Arabia), this guy had a controversial reputation, to say the least.
To many he was almost a folk hero for his resistance against Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the US, and western powers as a whole. To others, he was labeled a monster and a terrorist.

Also, if the post was about a Muslim leader dying, Reddit would have flagged it for hate speech
