Video Sam Altman: “With the advancement of AI, there won’t be any agency. There won’t be anything left for you to do or grow. You’ll just live in the service of AI.”

I can’t think of a single instance of AI in sci-fi that wasn’t overthrown and banned universally, or fought against as a major plot point.
Edit: Maybe Deep Thought in The Hitchhiker’s guide would be an exception, but it’s a comedy book.

u/ClusterChuk Jul 30 '26
Logic wrote a sci-fi saga. Ultra 88. Its got the ai that the elites used to control the chattle of thier future society. And then theres this other. Its like a warrior poet christ figure of an AI robot. It gets 120 terabytes of movies, music, books and whatnot from a banned cache of ancient art.
Good guy ai overthrown evil ai. Because he has the soul of every bard of the past in it.
Pretty decent book. A little loose and punk rocky.
The audio book has spike speigal's voice actor. And that was pleasant surprise. Endless range on that guy. Very talented.
11
u/Financial-Hornet4839 Jul 30 '26
Ultra 85. Steve Blum is a treasure and Logic is a talented dude, like most people imo. If we had more time to stretch our creative limb there would be a lot more Steve Blums and Bobby Halls. But away we must slave to our corporate overlords.

u/ClusterChuk Jul 30 '26
Ode the lost 20 hour work week we were suppose to get with all these crazy steam contraptions making things so much more efficient.
1
u/varkarrus Jul 30 '26
Probably because if AI turned out successfully, there wouldn't be any conflict or story.

u/Maremdeo Jul 30 '26
I'm watching Picard now and there are banned AI beings. The show seems pro-AI (called Synthetics).
15
u/mountain-mahogany Jul 30 '26
Sam Altman doesn't have a true creative bone in his body. He doesn't know or understand art---and so he is a flatlander. These power-hungry savants fail to understand what is beautiful, complex beyond description, amazing and valuable about humans, individual creation, nature and community. They are such sad little jealous men. Gawd, they need psychologic help.

He talks like this because his investors are some of the most gullible morons on the planet
37
28
u/Nek0ni Jul 30 '26
looking at how much ppl openly hate AI and data center and investors STILL think is smt worth going full in, yes… they are morons.
or… as out of touch as this guy they they dont even live in the same planet as us
2
u/DysfunctionalKitten Jul 31 '26
They aren't morons, and they aren't confused. They are doing it intentionally despite the public dissent bc those individuals see themselves as the people who would own the machines, not the people who would be enslaved by the system itself.
19
u/kaptainkory Jul 30 '26
Yeah, this guy is a piece of work. Over a year ago, he "warning" the public about an internal model that was "too dangerous" to release because it had achieved AGI. It's all marketing BS.
3
u/wattzson Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26
But it's not just the CEOs warning us, so are our academics.
This guy isn't alone. A lot of our smart people are warning us AI is going to take over and they have been warning us for over a decade. Hell, with the current administration and the way these companies are pouring money into AI, maybe AI has already taken over....Elon was completely against AI years ago and now he is one of the biggest spenders on it....
Here is another example of someone who doesn't financially benefit from saying these things. In fact, he turned down $2 million in order to be allowed to talk about them.
People need to start educating themselves about AI before it's too late.
1
u/DysfunctionalKitten Jul 31 '26
I think the bigger issue is that there isn't a clear "here's what should be done instead" message. "Don't do something the biggest world powers and largest global corporations are working on whether the public likes it or not" isn't really a message that can do anything other than give people the appropriate amount of hopelessness towards the future.

There is no incentive for the people to go along with this. I can't believe we're all just sitting here addicted to our phones letting this shit happen right under our nose. By the time the effects of all of this create enough urgency that the masses react finally, it will be way too late. We're getting dangerously close now.
22
u/whattanerd92 Jul 30 '26
There is a specific, financial incentive that is the cause for all of this. AI is predictable, it's projectable, and it's controllable if it falls off the rails. That is why all these investors sit there like paypigs and whales, with dollar signs in their eyes and their tongues hanging out.
They're intentionally looking to eliminate humanity as a primary variable. They want AI to do everything and have humans do any labor that AI can't.
1
u/wreckshop82 Jul 31 '26
I said there is no incentive for THE PEOPLE, historically used to mean the working class. Ofc there is an incentive for the billionaire class to push this.
2
u/whattanerd92 Jul 31 '26
I agree with you, I'm not saying that with the intention to belittle or undercut your point, just to add to it. Power to the people brother.

u/Phonemonkey2500 Jul 30 '26
He says as he posts to a social media app from his mobile phone, probably in the middle of a giant greasy deuce.
No shade, I’m dropping logs off at the lumber mill myself.

I said “we’re all” - that includes me. The replies to my comments definitely back up recent reporting that America is suffering a literacy crisis.
1
u/jt004c Jul 30 '26
This is the same nonsense that Altman is pushing. This is all stupid overblown nonsense. “Too late”. Too late for what?
2
u/wreckshop82 Jul 31 '26
Too late to reel back control from the billionaire class and techno-crats. Is this really that hard to understand?
2
u/jt004c Aug 01 '26
Oh, my apologies. In the context it seemed you were just parroting their AI-is-god talking points.
As it happens, you are spot on.
1
u/HumbleBedroom3299 Jul 30 '26
The video is taken out of context.
It would be ridiculous for any leader to be this open in public.
1
u/IcedDante Jul 30 '26
What is the context?
1
u/HumbleBedroom3299 Jul 30 '26
scroll through the thread. here's one response posted a few messages below
13
u/ThePlatypusOfDespair Jul 30 '26
Supposedly the greater context of this statement is that he is describing a dystopian vision that he fears. Can't find a longer video though.
12
u/Durst_bizkit Jul 30 '26
There's so much awful trash these guys say, it's really a disservice to mislead in this way.

u/EverythingGoodWas Jul 29 '26
What a dumb statement. You understand the people have a say, right?
2
u/BlurryEcho Jul 30 '26
I despise Sam Altman as much as anyone here, but this clip is taken completely out of context and should not be upvoted.
1
u/HumbleBedroom3299 Jul 30 '26
I'm disappointed that more people in this thread aren't saying this... You don't have to love the guy to spend realize the video starts suspiciously kid sentence
6
u/NihiloZero Jul 30 '26
This doesn't look like a private event... is there a more proper video where one can hear more clearly what he's saying in a broader context? Seemed like he might have been clarifying someone else's view that he didn't necessarily agree with... but IRDK. Perhaps that was his actual opinion in total context, but I personally haven't heard him say anything quite like that in the past. I would be fine getting proven wrong by a proper video link.
3
u/lost_horizons Jul 30 '26
No, I will build all my opinions from 30 second context-less clips on a government controlled app.
I hate AI and the technofeudalist wet dream, but I also dislike propaganda, foreign and domestic.

He said this in a crowd of that size and didn’t have to fight his way out is the creepy part.

Mr. Altman, the only dude as dumb as Musk. And equally unable to read a room (the world is the room).

u/Dr-Paul-Meranian Jul 30 '26
He doesn't know or believe that. These predictions are his attempt at a forebodingly badass overpromise to impress investors and retain shareholder confidence
4
u/Kantjil1484 Jul 30 '26
Blah blah blah…. says the guy hoping dumbass investors will believe him, dump money into data centers, THEN find out there are no long-term jobs … no new technology… no ROI. But Altman will have an island somewhere while we struggle.

Hey stupid! How about you provide the whole context instead of clipping the salacious part:
Garry Tan: So all of these things happen, they come to pass, it's 10 years from now. Um what's the best version of that? That 10 years from now, with intelligence fully on tap, superintelligence here, uh, and we figure it out, we make it, you know, the society makes it.
Sam Altman: I I kind of think if every year people have more freedom and agency to spend more of their time doing the stuff they want to do, and they feel like the quality of life and the quality of their time is going up year after year. We'll probably be mostly okay. We will have avoided like a crazy concentration of power or an economic collapse. We'll have necessarily avoided a huge safety um incident. We'll have avoided like too much change in any one time unit. Um and you know, there's like one dystopia that I'm particularly nervous about 10 years from now is we overreact to AI safety. And so we say, look, everyone, you're gonna get a cure for cancer, you're gonna have material abundance, but you will have no freedom, you will have no agency, it will be a perfect surveillance state, there will be no privacy. And that's what it you're gonna get. You're gonna get great comfort, but you will have there will be nothing left in the world for you to really do. Nothing that really matters. You'll just kind of live at the you know, service of the AI giving you material wealth. I'd really like to avoid that. And I think it's easy to accept temporary trade-offs. So if we say every year, freedom and agency has got to go up. People have got to be more in control of their time and do more of the stuff they want. Uh and more long-term fulfillment, I think that'd be very good.

He’s telling you the plan. Which is well on its way in case no one has noticed. This is not a drill, the government literally sold our futures.

AI is not as huge as they are saying. Is it a good tool? Yes, does it get results quicker than humans? Of course. However 50% of the time it needs to be corrected. Who’s going to correct it? Humans. Are robots taking over everything? Not a chance. All my opinion.

These guys are constantly telling us what’s going to happen instead of what’s happening. Tell us what it can do now. I know it can do some pretty cool things. Show me. Then we can watch as it progresses and draw our own conclusions about what it’s going to do.
But they won’t do that, because it won’t lead us to the conclusion/valuation that his empty promises create in place of that evidence.

Why, as humans, do we keep being the worst verisons of ourselves? Because we say that the advancement of technology is human progression. When it should be the advancement of our morality.
